Crowsnest Outdoors BY HEATHER DAVIS

“I often hear people say that Crowsnest Pass is a hidden gem.”

Well, it sure is! It is so incredible to share with others this immaculate, rarely traveled area. Going into the backcountry around Crowsnest Pass is full of opportunities to explore, and it feels like the true – remote and wild. Trail systems start right from our doorsteps and extend on to mountain tops, lakes, and into a personal playground.

Crowsnest Outdoors is a club founded to bring like- minded people together to respectfully enjoy the pristine outdoors. This group is comprised of locals and passersby, young and old, fast and slow. The local leads for each trip will gladly help anyone who is keen to participate, and as a group we are super excited to share knowledge about local vegetation and wildlife.

In the summer, Crowsnest Outdoors mainly focuses on hiking and scrambling while in the winter, we will go snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Canada’s four seasons offers a variety of adventures, which challenge and motivate us to explore further. The specific adventures vary from year to year, season to season.

Some local favourites include Turtle Mountain, Crowsnest Mountain, Saskatoon Mountain, Lille, Window Mountain Lake, Frank Slide North Boundary Trail and the Livingstone Raptor Lookout. In the winter, we like to warm up to a mid-point fire and then continue meandering through the mountains. We hope you can join us in the future and be apart of exploring the wonderful Crowsnest Outdoors.

Most notable in this movement are the magnificent Golden Eagles that glide and soar high above the Livingstone Ridge, often in amazingly high numbers; in fact more Golden Eagles CCS WildEd: 403-563-0058 Connecting to Nature events: 403-563-7545 are seen in the Crowsnest Pass area than anywhere else in the Other inquiries: 403-753-2040 world. www.crowsnestconservation.ca | [email protected] The world record fall count for the species here is 5,445 birds 12707 – 20th Ave. Blairmore and the world record single-day count is 1071. In the spring, P.O. Box 242 Crowsnest Pass, AB, T0K 0E0 the movement starts in late February and extends to late May, but the main Golden Eagle movement peaks around March 20. In the fall, migration occurs between late August and mid- December with maximum movement in October.

The movement can be most easily observed from the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre (bring binoculars) or, for the more adventurous, a strenuous walk up to a 1900m ridge will bring you much closer to the birds. In addition to Golden Eagles good numbers of 17 other bird of prey species are regularly seen.

ATV Adventures BY THE CROWSNEST PASS QUAD SQUAD

CROWSNEST PASS QUAD SQUAD IMAGE

Crowsnest Pass offers over 1400 km of trails for all users to share and enjoy.

To the south there are designated trails such as Willoughby Ridge and Hastings Ridge. A specific family ATV trail has been designed for novices in the south as well. Scenic trails to the north include Daisy Creek, Crowsnest Mountain, and many others. These are just a small number of designated trails developed for responsible and sustainable riding.

There are two very popular area attractions for ATV riders. The Plane Crash is the site of a Royal Canadian Air Force DC-3 (Dakota) aircraft that crashed into Mt. Ptolemy and plummeted into the valley below on January 19, 1946, Parts of the plane and debris are still visible, and if you visit please do not disturb any of the wreckage. The gorgeous 9km trail consists of fairly moderate, although occasionally challenging terrain, and is well worth the ride. The ghost town of Lille, an abandoned mining community situated just outside of Blairmore, is another popular place to ride while taking in the scenery along the way. One can still see the remnants of streets, foundations, coking ovens, and fire hydrants. There are also several old coal mines in the area to visit.

SKIING IN THE BACKCOUNTRY in the mountains surrounding Crowsnest Pass is an exhilarating experience. There are endless opportunities to get up high to enjoy the view or tour through forest on the mountainsides.

Although there are many multi-use trails that provide access to the backcountry, the most enjoyable skiing is off-trail on untracked snow in the open forest and subalpine meadows, which can be reached from your own back door or by a short drive up a forestry road.
