Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Jason Bieler – Über die Freude, von einem Labelrepräsentanten angeschrieen zu werden Jason Bieler hat mit seinem aktuellen Album „Songs For The Apocalypse“ ein wahres Fest für Freunde eigensinniger, harter, anspruchsvoll instrumentierter und dennoch eingängiger Rockklänge abgeliefert. Grund genug, den Multiinstrumentalisten für Betreutes Proggen auch einmal auszuquetschen. Unser Betreuer Sascha traf auf einen sympathischen, bodenständigen und auskunftsfreudigen Musiker, der im Gespräch bereitwillig über seine bisherige Karriere, das aktuelle Album und Zukunftsmusik plauderte… und dessen Antworten oft so unvorhersehbar von Thema zu Thema springen wie seine Musik das tut. BP: Fangen wir doch einfach mit dem neuen Album an. Was hat Dich dazu gebracht, ausgerechnet jetzt Dein erstes richtiges Soloalbum mit Label, CD-Release und allem Drum und Dran anzuschieben, nachdem Du über die letzten Jahre mit Owl Stretching ja komplett anders verfahren bist? Jason: Owl Stretching war eher eine Art Songschreiber-Projekt für mich, ich wollte mich einfach nur auf’s Schreiben konzentrieren, keine große Produktion, keine endlose Suche nach dem richtigen Hall auf der Snare – ich wollte einfach nur schreiben. Im Durchschnitt habe ich an jedem Song in etwa 24 Stunden gearbeitet und ihn dann auf Bandcamp hochgeladen – und weitergeschrieben. Ich begann mitNick Titos, dem amerikanischen Label-Repräsentanten, über ein potenzielles Album zu sprechen. Wenn ich das Album nur für mich selbst gemacht hätte, wäre da immer eine gute Entschuldigung gewesen, es nicht fertigzustellen. Ich werde mich schließlich nicht selbst anschreien, das verdammte Ding endlich abzuliefern! Der Gedanke, dass da jemand ist, der mir etwas Druck macht und regelmäßig fragt „Wo ist das Album? Wo bleibt das verdammte Album?“, gefiel mir also ganz gut.
