Nightclub has songs banned in royaltyrow ByRay Managh

ONE of the country's top night clubs has had its DJ playlist slashed by tens of thousands of hits. The songs fall within the repertoire of IMRO, the Irish Music Rights Organisation. Barrister Una Cassidy told the Circuit Civil Court yesterday that club owner John Conway, who trades as Joys in Lower Baggot Street, Dublin, was still contravening a music licence agreement that had already been cancelled by the organisation.

UNPAID IMRO, a non-profit making limited company, each year collects more than €32m in royalties from pubs, clubs and other venues for distribution to songwriters, composers and music publishers who make up its 8,500 members in Ireland. Ms Cassidy told Judge Jacqueline Linnane during an application for judgment for €4,430 against Conway, that a much earlier judgment obtained against him last year for €11,560 remained unpaid. IMRO had cancelled its music performing licence with the club in September last year. Judge Linnane granted the new judgment application along with an injunction restraining the playing of any IMRO copyrighted music in Joys. She refused counsel for Conway an adjournment.
