BRINGING SEX TO THEORY: SENSATIONAL AFFINITY, PLEASURE AND SEXUAL PEDAGOGY by ADREANNA NATTIEL Under the Direction of Susan Talburt, PhD ABSTRACT This project is about theorizing black queer women’s sexualities and experiences with sexual pleasure outside the lens of traditional identitarian frameworks. Drawing on queer pornography and pleasure-based sex education, I analyze how these various forms of sex education conceptualize and deploy sexual pedagogy. Further, my project maps the ways in which black queer women’s sexual pleasure can be read through the lens of sensational affinity, which can serve as a form of queer world making. (122) —Juana María Rodríguez, Sexual Futures, Queer Gestures, and Other Latina Longings 1.1 Introduction In writing this thesis, I wanted to get past the idea that sex is what we do and identity is who we are. Rather, I argue that sensation is what we seek and in that seeking lies the possibility of becoming connected. Initially, my endeavor with this project was to move beyond identity, which I viewed (in an admittedly myopic way) as a stumbling block to more radical imaginings of black lesbian sexuality; however, this work became a way for me to explore the tensions that exist between essentialized identity and collective experience. Using pleasure as an analytic, I was able to understand the ways in which identity informs our experiences of pleasure and how those sensations help to form connections between bodies. To facilitate this research, I observed a sex education workshop, interviewed a queer black sex educator, and explored two pornographic films created by and for black lesbians. My goal was to analyze the ways in which the erotic facilitates and informs the formation of both subjectivity and community. My proposition is informed by a recent development in black feminism and Black Sexuality Studies: a renewed focus on the potentiality of pleasure for black women. While black feminist theorists have written extensively on the black female body’s legacy of pain, our pleasure has not been explored with the same voracity. MacKinnon on sex and sexuality has often been posed as adversary to the development of queer theory. Leo Bersani, in particular, is critical of the normative ambitions of their work, which he sees firstly as trying to ‘redeem’ sex acts themselves, and secondly as advocating for sexuality as a site of potential for social transformation. In this article, I argue that this is a misreading of their work. Drawing on Dworkin’s wide body of writing, and the early Signs essays of MacKinnon, I suggest that their work makes no such case for sex or sexuality. Rather, by bringing their analysis into conversation with Halberstam’s recent work on ‘shadow feminism’, I contend that Dworkin and MacKinnon’s anti- social, anti-pastoral and distinctly anti-normative vision of sex and sexuality shares many of the same features of queer theory, ultimately advocating for sex as ‘irredeemable’.

Big Hollywood names like James Franco and Rashida Jones are jumping on the bandwagon, using their influence and resources to invest in a type of audiovisual knowledge production far less mainstream than that in which they usually participate. The films that have resulted from this new movement are undoubtedly persuasive, no matter which side of the debate over pornography these directors have respectively chosen to represent. Moreover, regardless of the side(s) that audience members may have taken in the so-called “feminist porn debates,” one cannot ignore the rhetorical strength of the arguments presented in a wide variety of documentaries about pornography.

Hollibaugh’s movement politics date back to Freedom Summer in 1964 and she’s been a fulltime movement activist—whether New Left, feminist, or queer—ever since. For the past two decades, Hollibaugh has been at the center of feminist debate over sexuality and a leader in the fight against AIDS. She was the founding director of the Lesbian AIDS Project at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the first project of its kind in the nation, and produced an award- winning documentary on women living with AIDS, Heart of the Matter (1994). She is the author of My Dangerous Desires: A Queer Girl Dreaming Her Way Home (2000) and is currently the senior strategist with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.     Pleasure, pain and pornography: A gendered analysis of the influence of contemporary pornography on the lives of New Zealand emerging adults By Samantha Maree Keene A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Criminology Social and Cultural Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2019 i ii Abstract Historically, concerns have been raised about violence in pornography and the influence that such portrayals may have on levels of violence against women and children. Today, pornography is pervasively available on the internet and viewed by both men and women in ever-increasing numbers. In New Zealand, violence against women and children remains at alarmingly high levels, and concerns about pornography’s influence on gendered violence are a common refrain. Research remains inconclusive about the impacts of pornography on viewers’ sexual scripts, behaviours and attitudes, yet the voices of those most affected by pornography – viewers and their partners – are often omitted from pornography studies. Few New Zealand studies employ a gendered analysis of men’s and women’s experiences with pornography. To provide research specific to New Zealand about these experiences, this thesis explores the reported influences of mainstream pornography on the lives of a self-selecting sample of (primarily) heterosexual New Zealanders between the ages of 18 and 30. It adopts a uniquely gendered analysis and critically interrogates both men’s and women’s experiences with pornography in the digital age. The findings of this research suggest that pornography research necessitates a gendered appraisal both in terms of how pornography is experienced individually, but also within intimate relationships.

The aim is to make sense of some common contemporary discourses on pornography, sexual representation, and sexual conduct by exploring their sources in feminist political conflicts of four decades ago, as well as examining how the feminist engagement in these issues was entangled in other trajectories of conflicts over sexual representation and sexual media. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the feminist movement was rent by a series of acrimonious debates over issues relating to sexual conduct and representation. While there were disputes over many aspects of sexual behavior, some of the most intense controversy focused on “pornography,” although the definition of what constituted “pornography” was itself contested. Nonetheless, the roles of certain kinds of sexual imagery and behaviors in the creation and maintenance of male supremacy, and their causal relationships to violence against women, were contested with unusual ferocity. While these debates have largely subsided within feminism, they have not disappeared. Moreover, they continually affect a variety of other cultural conflicts which erupt on an almost daily basis. Debates about government funding of sexually explicit art, concern over the putative dangers of on-line sexual content, and struggles over what imagery is appropriate for public display are constant features of the cultural landscape.

    WHITNEY STRUB Sanitizing the Seventies Pornography, Home Video, and the Editing of Sexual Memory ABSTRACT During the 1980s US feminist sex wars, pornography edited its own history, leav- ing a distorted record both less problematic and less queer than scholars have yet recognized. Academic inquiry into pornography coincided with home-video boom years, and research often took place in adult backrooms, necessarily because pornography was so poorly archived. Yet even as access has shifted from VHS to digital, the field has yet to reckon with how its interpre- tive frameworks were shaped by a material history in which the films that scholars watched were often altered from the versions patrons had seen in theaters. Gone from both straight and gay films were many transgressive sex acts that had frequently been staples of the genre, affecting the perceived oeuvre of nearly every hardcore filmmaker of the era. This article recov- ers the lost history of sexual media editing, arguing for a more carefully historicized interro- gation of the commercial sources of our porn archives. Few noticed and no official archives recorded or preserved this change, but the interpretive stakes were, and remain, high. Scenes disappeared, and with them the social meanings of texts, resulting in a disconnect between embodied histori- cal experiences and the later textual interpretations of those works. The pornog- raphy industry sanitized its s iterations, leaving a distorted record that narrowed the scope of its erotic imaginary in ways that left it both less misogy- nistic and less expansive, a triumph of the banal and the genital that necessitates intervention, since the “porno chic” that scholars have inherited is in large part an industrial memory production of the sands, as pornography’shis- tory was quietly disciplined and revised over the course of its various platform adaptations.

    “AND THEN THEY BONED”: AN ANALYSIS OF FANFICTION AND ITS INFLUENCE ON SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT By Lindsay Mixer A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Humboldt State University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Sociology Committee Membership Dr. Meredith Williams, Committee Chair Dr. Mary Virnoche, Committee Member Dr. Meredith Williams, Program Graduate Coordinator May 2018 ABSTRACT “AND THEN THEY BONED”: AN ANALYSIS OF FANFICTION AND ITS INFLUENCE ON SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT Lindsay Mixer The purpose of this research is to demonstrate how young adults come to understand their sexuality (from sexual and gender identities to sexual likes and dislikes) through reading and writing fanfiction. Previous studies show that fanfiction promotes non-heterosexual orientations, but little research has been done on how it contributes to overall sexual development. In conducting an online survey of fanfiction readers, I explore how fans use these works to generate an understanding of themselves as sexual beings. Explicit stories make up a sizable portion of the fanfiction available, and there is a wide range of sexual acts depicted in those stories; ones that readers may not have been introduced to otherwise. Fanfiction can also facilitate discussion of sexuality and gender identity, topics that may not be appropriate in other social spheres, which can assist further sexual development. I engage with feminist discourses around lesbian SM within the so- called feminist sex wars of the 1980s, tracing the sometimes dramatic rise to prominence of lesbian SM as a feminist issue. Entwined in this web of controversy, I assert, is the story of a perceived fundamental split in the feminist movement between those who believed SM was patriarchal, abusive and violent, and those who saw it as a consensual expression of sexual freedom and liberation.
