Introduction • Scientific achievements were getting more realistic, getting away from the mystical and superstitious ideas of the medieval ages. • The Christian reformation led by Martin Luther in 1517 A.D. added more division to the already divided Europe. • Galileo (1564 – 1642 A. D.) proved the earth was not the center of the universe, but a small dot in a grand solar system. • Three inventions had a great influence, gunpowder, printing and the marine compass. Introduction Introduction • Renaissance started in Italy. • The Gothic architecture never got a firm hold in Italy. • Many things aided the Italians to start the Renaissance, the resentment to Gothic, the discovery of new classical ruins and the presence of great Roman structures. • The movement in art and sculpture started a century before architecture. • The movement was not a gradual development from the Gothic, like the Gothic did from Romanesque, but was a bit more sudden and more like a conscious choice by artists and architects. -

This article represents an effort to reveal a new [email protected] interpretation of the expression ‘the architectural language of Palladian designs’ that is closer to real linguistic paradigms than Keywords: architectural it usually means. The scope of this FSA application, façade article is limited to the morphology of the façades of the first morphology nine buildings shown in the second book of Palladio’s treatise, specifically the palazzo designs that he presents in chapter three. The morphology is described in terms of a symbolic encoding system that is represented textually and graphically as a finite state automaton, the concept of which is borrowed from theories of formal languages and computation. The system helps to emphasize commonalities in façade languages and to propose a prototype for generating Palladian palazzo façade designs. The automaton-based encoding system may be developed to function as a base for a computerized façade encoder and decoder. Regular language processing and recognition Studies of formal languages, and their structural and computational representations in linguistics, computer science and related fields as well as their applications, are well- established (e.g., [Chomsky 1964]; [Aho and Ullman 1972]; [Salomaa 1973]; [Harrison 1978]; [Hopcroft and Ullman 1979]; [Linz 1997]; [Revesz 1983]). -

Romanesque Renaissance – Introduction Konrad Ottenheym ‘Look at this majestic building with all its columns, and now you can imagine how many slaves these Roman emperors must have used to build it!’, I heard a tourist guide explaining to his group on the Piazza Venezia in Rome in 2016, as he pointed to the imposing marble monument to Vittorio Emanuele II. The Altare della Patria, symbol of the unified Italian kingdom of the nineteenth cen- tury, is in fact barely a century old, having been built in 1895–1911.1 Apparently, even in our time it is not always easy to make out the refined differences be- tween genuine ancient Roman architecture and later works of art which were meant to create a visual connection with the glorious past. Erroneous dating of old buildings, interpreting them as far older than they actually are, has hap- pened in all centuries. From the fifteenth century onwards, antiquarians, humanist scholars, ar- chitects and artists, striving for a revival of the architectural forms and prin- ciples of Ancient Rome, investigated respectable ruins and age-old buildings in order to look for useful models and sources of inspiration. They too, oc- casionally misinterpreted younger buildings as proofs of majestic Roman or other ancient glory. This especially was assumed for buildings that were con- sciously inspired by ancient Roman architecture, such as the buildings of the Carolingian, Ottonian and Stauffer emperors. But even if the correct age of a certain building was known (Charlemagne’s Palatine Chapel in Aachen, for example), buildings from c. 800–1200 were sometimes regarded as ‘Antique’ architecture, since the concept of ‘Antiquity’ was far more stretched than our modern periodisation allows. -

Its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC, although decorations of the Parthenon continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an Parthenon 2 enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure.[3] The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. -
Palladio's Influence in America
Palladio’s Influence In America Calder Loth, Senior Architectural Historian, Virginia Department of Historic Resources 2008 marks the 500th anniversary of Palladio’s birth. We might ask why Americans should consider this to be a cause for celebration. Why should we be concerned about an Italian architect who lived so long ago and far away? As we shall see, however, this architect, whom the average American has never heard of, has had a profound impact on the architectural image of our country, even the city of Baltimore. But before we investigate his influence we should briefly explain what Palladio’s career involved. Palladio, of course, designed many outstanding buildings, but until the twentieth century few Americans ever saw any of Palladio’s works firsthand. From our standpoint, Palladio’s most important achievement was writing about architecture. His seminal publication, I Quattro Libri dell’ Architettura or The Four Books on Architecture, was perhaps the most influential treatise on architecture ever written. Much of the material in that work was the result of Palladio’s extensive study of the ruins of ancient Roman buildings. This effort was part of the Italian Renaissance movement: the rediscovery of the civilization of ancient Rome—its arts, literature, science, and architecture. Palladio was by no means the only architect of his time to undertake such a study and produce a publication about it. Nevertheless, Palladio’s drawings and text were far more engaging, comprehendible, informative, and useful than similar efforts by contemporaries. As with most Renaissance-period architectural treatises, Palladio illustrated and described how to delineate and construct the five orders—the five principal types of ancient columns and their entablatures. -

It is probably a misreading of the secondary source on the Order’s administration, that we read the statement by Kerr: “individual Cistercian houses were joined together in familial bonds and arranged in a hierarchy” (82). This is only partially correct, for a foremost principle of the Cistercian Charter of Charity (whatever its date) is that Cistercian abbeys and their abbots were to treat one another equally, unlike in the monarchical hierarchy of Cluny. Despite calling Cîteaux “the mother of us all,” there is no single abbot ruling the Order, but a collective head, the General Chapter of all abbots. The chapter on Cistercian spirituality, given the limited space, provides interesting evidence from saints’ lives about (often female) mystics who may have had ties to Cistercians. -

Anna Bortolozzi 3 Architects, Antiquarians, and the Rise of the Image in Renaissance Guidebooks to Ancient Rome Rome fut tout le monde, & tout le monde est Rome1 Drawing in the past, drawing in the present: Two attitudes towards the study of Roman antiquity In the early 1530s, the Sienese architect Baldassare Peruzzi drew a section along the principal axis of the Pantheon on a sheet now preserved in the municipal library in Ferrara (Fig. 3.1).2 In the sixteenth century, the Pantheon was generally considered the most notable example of ancient architecture in Rome, and the drawing is among the finest of Peruzzi’s surviving architectural drawings after the antique. The section is shown in orthogonal projection, complemented by detailed mea- surements in Florentine braccia, subdivided into minuti, and by a number of expla- natory notes on the construction elements and building materials. By choosing this particular drawing convention, Peruzzi avoided the use of foreshortening and per- spective, allowing measurements to be taken from the drawing. Though no scale is indicated, the representation of the building and its main elements are perfectly to scale. Peruzzi’s analytical representation of the Pantheon served as the model for several later authors – Serlio’s illustrations of the section of the portico (Fig. 3.2)3 and the roof girders (Fig. 3.3) in his Il Terzo Libro (1540) were very probably derived from the Ferrara drawing.4 In an article from 1966, Howard Burns analysed Peruzzi’s drawing in detail, and suggested that the architect and antiquarian Pirro Ligorio took the sheet to Ferrara in 1569.
