John the Apostle and Evangelist was known as the “beloved disciple” because of his close relationship to Jesus in the gospel he wrote (the Gospel of John). Saint John’s brother Saint James the Greater was also an Apostle and they, along with Saint Peter, witnessed the Transfiguration. Saint John was the only one of the Twelve Apostles that did not abandon Jesus at the cross. There Jesus told his beloved disciple to take the Virgin Mary as his mother and for her to take him as her son. Three days later, he and Saint Peter were the first Apostles to witness the Resurrection. According to tradition, Saint John went to Ephesus after the Assumption of Mary where he died many years later. He was the only one of the Twelve not to die as a martyr for following Christ.
