THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel

Dear Parish Family, One of the hallmarks of a dynamic community is that it has the power to attract people, and so it is with the Church. Several weeks ago, several hundred “catechumens” from throughout the Archdiocese celebrated the “Rite of Election” at our Cathedral in Newark with Archbishop Hebda. These catechumens are people who are unbaptized and who are seeking full initiation into the here in the Archdiocese of New- ark. One of them is a young woman from our own parish named Ashley (last year, her was baptized, con- firmed and given First at the Vigil, and this year Ashley will follow). We are so inspired by Ash- ley’s faith and the support of her family, and we pray during this Lenten season for all catechumens throughout the world. Remember that Lent, before it became associated with repentance and ashes, was a 40 day retreat for catechumens in preparation for full initiation at the Easter Vigil. So let us pray in a special way for all those many thousands throughout the world who will be joining us in the Roman Catholic Church this year. Those of you who attend the 9:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday will experience some of the rituals that are part of the process that welcomes and prepares catechumens, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). In addition to Ash- ley, we also have others who are already baptized (in either the Catholic Church or other Christian denomina- tions) who are preparing for First Eucharist or , or to make a full Profession of Faith as they enter the Catholic Church. We pray for these men and women as well, and we look forward to the time when they will fully join us as members of Christ’s Church here at St. James. An interesting thing I have experienced here at St. James- the numbers of young adults, young teens and even children asking to be received into the Church. We have a special group of teens preparing for Initiation who meet many Sunday mornings to continue learning about our faith. I am most grateful to those who work with these catechumens and candidates: Fr. Silvano Kim, Nancy Caputo, Pat McGovern, Mary Ellen Capon, Tressa & Chuck Dombroski. Recently, Francis said that “the church grows through attraction, not proselytism.” In other words, as Catholics we don’t use aggressive tactics to manipu- late and recruit people to our Church (as other denominations often do), rather we allow the Holy Spirit to gently work through us that others might be attracted to Christ through our example and (when appropriate) invitation. Several weeks ago we asked parishioners to join our newly forming Baptismal Team, and the Lord has truly blessed us with those who came forward and said ‘yes!’ About fifteen people (including several married couples and others) are now part of this team. Our goal is to provide a quality experience for those who come to the par- ish to have their children baptized. This Sunday afternoon for the first time our new Team will help to welcome six young couples welcoming their first child and preparing for baptism here at St. James. The Team will conduct a discussion on Christian parenting, how the arrival of a new child impacts the relationship between husband and wife, and the meaning of Baptism. The Team will also be present at each celebration of the Sacrament, and are currently helping the parish to develop some process to follow-up with these parents and continue to support and invite them to deeper involvement in the spiritual development of their children. Please pray for this wonderful new Baptismal Team! I am personally grateful for so many members of our parish family who volunteer to do the work of the Gospel here at St. James. May we all find some place, some ministry, and some way to give back to God through the use of our time and talent here in our parish. May God continue to bless us with many oth- ers who are attracted to Christ through us!

In His , ~ Fr. John
