Static electricity becomes visible and dynamic during the brief moment it sparks a discharge and for that instant it’s no longer at rest. Lightning is the result of static discharge as is the shock you receive just before contacting a grounded object during unusually dry weather. Matter is composed of atoms, which in turn are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The number of protons and neutrons, which make up the atoms nucleus, determine the type of material. Electrons orbit the nucleus and balance the electrical charge of the protons. When both negative and positive are equal, the charge of the balanced atom is neutral. If electrons are removed or added to this configuration, the overall charge becomes either negative or positive resulting in an unbalanced atom. Materials with high conductivity, such as steel, are called conductors and maintain neutrality because their electrons can move freely from atom to atom to balance any applied charges. Therefore, conductors can dissipate static when properly grounded. Non-conductive materials, or insulators such as plastic and wood, have the opposite property as their electrons can not move freely to maintain balance. -

EINE INITIATIVE DER UNIVERSITÄT BASEL UND DES KANTONS AARGAU Swiss Nanoscience Institute Electromagnetism Electricity and magnetism are two aspects of the same phenomenon: electromagnetism. A moving electric charge (in other words, an electric current) generates a magnetic field. Every electromagnet consists of a coil, which is nothing more than a tightly wound wire. Many electromagnets also have an iron core to make the magnetic field stronger. The more times the wire is wound around the coil, the stronger the magnetic field produced by the same current. Demonstration: Using electric current to create a magnetic field What you’ll need • a large sheet of paper on which to conduct the experiment • a sheet of stiff card or plexiglass • two batteries connected in series • a coil of copper wire • iron filings • crocodile clips (optional) • a small piece of iron (e.g. a screw) to place inside the coil (iron core) Instructions 1. Position the coil so that you can easily access the two ends of the wire and connect them to the battery. I used crocodile clips to attach them to the battery contacts, but you could also use wooden clothes pegs or electrical tape. 2. Connect the two batteries in series (+ - + - ). 3. Place the plexiglass or card over the coil. 4. When the electrical circuit is closed, slowly scatter the iron filings on top. What happens? The iron filings arrange themselves along the magnetic field lines. If you look closely, you can make out a pattern. Turn a screw into an electromagnet What you’ll need • a long iron screw or nail • two pieces of insulated copper wire measuring 15 and 30 cm • two three-pronged thumb tacks • a metal paperclip • a small wooden board • pins or paperclips • a 4.5 V battery Instructions Switch 1. -

Magnetism Known to the early Chinese in 12th century, and in some detail by ancient Greeks who observed that certain stones “lodestones” attracted pieces of iron. Lodestones were found in the coastal area of “Magnesia” in Thessaly at the beginning of the modern era. The name of magnetism derives from magnesia. William Gilbert, physician to Elizabeth 1, made magnets by rubbing Fe against lodestones and was first to recognize the Earth was a large magnet and that lodestones always pointed north-south. Hence the use of magnetic compasses. Book “De Magnete” 1600. The English word "electricity" was first used in 1646 by Sir Thomas Browne, derived from Gilbert's 1600 New Latin electricus, meaning "like amber". Gilbert demonstrates a “lodestone” compass to ER 1. Materials that Cause Static Electricity http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/static_materials.htm Some materials cause or create more static electricity than others. Since static electricity is the collection of electrically charged particles on the surface of a material, various materials have a tendency of either giving up electrons and becoming positive (+) in charge or attracting electrons and becoming negative (−) in charge. The Triboelectric Series is a list of materials, showing which have a greater tendency to become positive (+) and which have a greater tendency to become negative (−). The list is a handy tool to determine which combinations of materials create the most static electricity. Questions you may have include: What are materials in the Triboelectric Series? What are the best combinations of materials? What are acceptable combinations? Triboelectric Series Common materials are listed according how well they create static electricity when rubbed with another material, as well as what charge the material will possess. Become positive in charge The following materials will tend to give up electrons when brought in contact with other materials. They are listed from those with the greatest tendency to give electrons to those that barely give up electrons. The attraction force is necessary in considering the dynamic analysis of the mechanically loaded linear induction motor. To obtain the circuit parameters of the LIM, a physical system was implemented in the laboratory with a Rapid Prototype System. The model was created by modifying the traditional three-phase model of a Y-connected rotary induction motor in a d–q stationary reference frame. The discrete-time LIM model was obtained through the continuous time model solution for its application in simulations or computational solutions in order to analyze nonlinear behaviors and for use in discrete time control systems. To obtain the solution, the continuous time model was divided into a current-fed linear induction motor third-order model, where the current inputs were considered as pseudo-inputs, and a second-order subsystem that only models the currents of the primary with voltages as inputs. -
