Woodstock & the Circus
LOCAL HISTORY WOODSTOCK & MCHENRY COUNTY Woodstock and the Circus by Kirk Dawdy Soon after its establishment in 1852 Woodstock became a consistent destination for circus shows. Several different outfits visited Woodstock over the years, including the Burr Robbins, Forepaugh, Cole, W.B. Reynolds, Gollmar Brothers, Ringling Brothers and Barnum circuses. The first documented circus in Woodstock was “Yankee” Robinson’s Quadruple Show in October of 1856. Robinson, a direct descendant of Pastor John Robinson, religious leader of the "Pilgrim Fathers" who journeyed to North America aboard the Mayflower, established his first travelling circus in 1854, two years prior to visiting Woodstock. An ardent abolitionist, Robinson included in his circuses minstrel shows based on Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In fact, Robinson was the very first to ever take a dramatized version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the road. In “Yankee” Robinson’s 1856 Woodstock visit, in addition to presenting a band of African-American minstrels performing in a production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, he also exhibited live animals (including an elephant), a museum of curiosities, Dilly Fay the Shanghai Clown and Miss Paintero, a ‘Creole Lady’ who made a grand ascension on a 400 foot tightrope to the very top of the circus tent. Also advertised for “Yankee’s” visit was a grand parade around the Woodstock square. Circus parades were a crowd favorite and staple for all other circuses that visited Woodstock, weather permitting. Feeling his name sounded too foreign, especially during the anti-immigrant sentiments of the mid-1850s, Fayette Lodawick Robinson adopted the professional name “Yankee”. -

Abstract http://www.soa.ilstu.edu/anthropology/theses/burns/index.htm Through the "Front Door" to the "Backyard": Linguistic Variation of the American Circus Lisa Burns Illinois State University Anthropology Department Dr. James Stanlaw, Advisor May 1, 2003 Abstract The language of circus can be interpreted through two perspectives: the Traditional American Circus and the New American Circus. There is considerable anthropological importance and research within the study of spectacle and circus. However, there is a limited amount of academic literature pertaining to the linguistics and semiotics of circus. Through participant observation and interviewing, of both circus and non-circus individuals, data will be acquired and analyzed. Further research will provide background information of both types of circuses. Results indicate that an individual's preference can be determined based on the linguistic and semiotic terms used when describing the circus. Introduction Throughout my life, I have always been intrigued by the circus. As a result, I joined the Gamma Phi Circus, here at Illinois State University, in order to obtain a better understanding of circus in our culture. A brief explanation of the title is useful in understanding my paper. I chose the title "Through the 'Front Door' to the 'Backyard'" because "front door" is circus lingo for the doors that a person goes through on entering the tent. The word "backyard" refers to the area in which behind the tent where all the people in the production of the circus park their trailers. This title encompasses the range of information that I have gathered from performers, to directors, to audience members. -

2019 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS SESSION A: August 5-11 PERIOD 1: 10:00 - 10:55 AM Acting the Song - Denise Blase, 13+ In this class, songs will be approached from the position of an actor with the logic, intention, and emotion behind the music being analyzed and truthfully expressed. Bring a song you are working on or Denise will help you choose one. All styles welcome. Either accompany yourself or Denise will on the piano. Students will learn how to break down a song and connect to the piece through both the lyrics and the music. This is the perfect class for singers/actors who want to dig deep into bringing more expression and dynamic interpretation to their singing. Opportunity to work on solos, duets and/or small group numbers. Caz Horns - Jessica Jones, 12+ Come join the house horn section, available to perform with many different bands in camp, including the jazz, rock and gospel ensembles! We'll learn the music for each ensemble and will also rehearse with the rock band (and other ensembles as possible). Then we'll perform! Some experience on your instrument and basic reading ability necessary. Some riffing, some improv, some reading - we're the ones who make the music punch! At Spokane Gymnastics, the coaches focus on encouraging the development of strength, skill and character through gymnastics training in a positive environment. We strive to offer a program where every student has the greatest opportunity to succeed, no matter what their level or goal. We strive to balance teaching proper gymnastics skills, terminology and progressions in a fun environment where students are taught by breaking down the elements of the particular skills, hands- on “spotting” and training, low student-to-coach ratios and positive reinforcement. We believe that gymnastics is not only one of the most rewarding sports with unlimited benefits to other activities, but also FUN! Gymnastics not only increases strength, flexibility and balance, it is also encourages hard work, discipline and determination. Women's Artistic Gymnastics There are four events in Women's Artistic Gymnastics – Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Although most sports have seasons, gymnastics is a year-round commitment for athletes at the upper levels. Vault A successful vault begins with a strong, accelerated run. The best vaulters explode off the springboard with tremendous quickness during the pre-flight phase of the vault. When the gymnast pushes off of the vault table (also informally referred to as the horse) judges look for proper body position and instantaneous propulsion and explosive force. They watch the height and distance traveled as well as the number of flips and twists. Gymnasts strive to stick their landing by taking no extra steps. Uneven Bars Many consider the uneven bars the most spectacular of women's events, since to be successful the gymnasts must display strength as well as concentration, courage, coordination and split-second timing. -

Eroii Sanitari nr. 8 Abstract As a last link of the schooling system, higher education offers the optimal environment that is able to intervene and actively influence the process of developing, preserving and revitalizing the biological potential of the vocation for movement among this category of young people in an organized way . Competitional aerobic gymnastics, as a means of physical education with a more recent appearance, encompasses a wide range of means, taken from basic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, other sports disciplines, classical and modern dance performed and adapted on a musical background, trains rhythms, amplitudes and different positions with manifestations in group or individual. The wide popularity which enjoys derives from the accessibility of the means used, especially by introducing into the international competition system two more categories, namely aerobic dance and aerobic step. Particularities of age, the technical requirements and the content of the competition exercises to these two categories are arguments for them to be used in aerobic gymnastics lessons in higher education as well as in university competitions. As a result, in higher education, aerobic and aerobic step category are accessible and efficiente forms of optimization of lessons with students, a means with multiple valences on the body and also for the development of specific university competitions at local and national level. The Prescott Clowns
The Prescott Clowns From Prescott Elementary School Oakland, California This energetic group of clowns is directed in an after school program by Aileen Moffitt, a second grade teacher, aka "Irma La Clown." These children receive training in circus skills from professionals, then dazzle everyone with their juggling, unicycle riding, and dancing. They give back to their community tenfold with workshops in classrooms and performances at many commu- nity events, nursing homes, and shelters -- besides a long list of school assemblies. "Wherever we perform -- from lavish banquet receptions to small neighborhood events -- it is our intention to dispel negative myths about the children of West Oakland. And we do!" This will be the 15th season for the Prescott Clown Troupe. Last year in addition to the Senior Clowns, they incorporated a Junior Clown Troupe - third graders of 8 or 9 years old. -

Any translation or reproduction of this document is strictly prohibited without the prior consent of the FIG. WAGC ACRO 2017-2020 2 PREAMBLE The Fédération International de Gymnastique (FIG) Acrobatic Gymnastics Technical Committee is pleased to present the ratified World Age Group Competition Rules, effective January 2017. These rules are guided by the current FIG Statutes, General Technical Regulations, the FIG Judges’ Rules, the 2017 - 2020 Acrobatic Gymnastics Code of Points and Tables of Difficulty. This publication has been revised to reflect the changes that were made to the ACRO Code of Points 2017 – 2020. The basic principles which provide the foundation for the Age Group Program are unchanged. The Appendix is to eliminate the need for developing countries to consult multiple documents to construct exercises. Appendix 4 contains elements which may be used as optional elements for the 11-16 exercises. They are intended to provide new coaches with direction in skill selection, and to eliminate the need for the use of the FIG Tables of Difficulty. However, Appendix 4 does not prevent the use of the Tables of Difficulty by more experienced coaches and athletes. The remaining Appendices are excerpts taken from the ACRO Code of Points 2017 - 2020. This will minimize the need for new countries to consult the Code of Points for the 11-16 Age Group. -
