    The possible effects of irrigation schemes and irrigation methods on water budget and economy in Atatürk dam of south-eastern Anatolia region of Turkey Huseyin Demir1, Ahmet Zahir Erkan2, Nesrin Baysan2, Gonca Karaca Bilgen2 1 GAP Şanlıurfa Tünel Çıkış Ağzı 2 GAP Cankaya, Ankara, Turkey Abstract. The South-eastern Anatolia Project (GAP) has been implemented in the southeast part of Turkey, covering 9 provinces and the two most important rivers of Turkey. The main purpose of this gorgeous project is to uplift the income level and living standards of people in the region, to remove the inter-regional development disparities and to contribute to the national goals of economic development and social stability. The cost of the project is 32 billion USD consisting of 13 sub-projects in the river basins of Euphrates and Tigris. The project has evolved over time and has become multi sectoral, integrated and human based on the sustainable regional development. Upon the fully completion of the project, 1.8 Million hectares of land will be able to be irrigated in Euphrates and Tigris Basins through surface and underground water resources. From 1995 until now, 273.000 ha. of land have already been irrigated within the GAP Project. Roughly 739,000 ha. of this land will be irrigated from Atatürk Dam, the largest dam of GAP Project. At present, nearly ¼ of this area is under irrigation. Some technological developments have been experienced in the Project area, ranging from upstream controlled schemes having trapezoidal section, lined or unlined, to upstream controlled schemes having high pressurized piped system; and from conventional methods to drip irrigation method.

Area is forecast at 450,000 hectares (ha), up 29 percent from last year. However, yield is forecast at 1,645 kilograms per hectare (kg/ha), down 9 percent from last year’s near-record yield of 1,804 kg/ha. General Overview Cotton production is a critical part of the Turkish economy. Turkey is one of the world’s leading cotton-producing countries, with 2.5 percent of the total in 2020 (fig.1). Currently, it is the biggest producer in the Middle East, and it is the seventh-largest producer in the world after China, India, the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan with an estimated 2.9 mil-480 lb. bales of production for MY 2020/2021 (see Figure 1). Turkish cotton is grown in three major areas: the Mediterranean region, the Aegean region, and Southeast Anatolia, also known as the GAP region (see Figure 2). The latter two regions contribute about 80 percent of the total Turkish cotton production (see Figure 3). The Çukurova region, located near Adana on the south coast, and the Antalya region are the biggest cotton producing regions within the larger Mediterranean agricultural area.

    Malmö University School of International Migration and Ethnic Relations Human Rights 61-90 Fall -2007 The Assyrians/Syriacs of Turkey A forgotten people Author: Jenny Thomsen Supervisor: Tommie Sjöberg Abstract This thesis is focusing on the Assyrians/Syriacs of Turkey and their struggle for recognition in the Turkish context. The potential Turkish membership in the European Union has resulted in a discussion on the country’s minority policies and its reluctance to recognize certain minorities. The Assyrians/Syriacs constitute one of these groups that are at risk of being subjected to discrimination and violence. The aim of the study is to clarify the relation between the Turkish state and the Assyrians/Syriacs and to spread light on their struggle for recognition as a minority. In order to gain an understanding of the situation in Turkey and to get an insight in the experiences and perceptions of the Assyrians/Syriacs, interviews were conducted during a field study in Istanbul in 2007. The empirical findings are discussed in lines of the claims of the group, including freedom of religion, cultural rights, language rights, freedom of expression and the recognition of the Assyrian/Syriac genocide, as well as in terms of the Turkish policies and the demands of the European Union. The debate on multiculturalism within political theory is used to analyze the results, which are discussed in terms of assimilation, nationalism and religion, and the meaning of recognition. The main findings of the study include that the members of the minority are pressured into being assimilated into the larger society, mainly due to the nationalistic attitude in the country.

This figure—culled last month from periodically updated statistics released by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)—constitutes a 4.2% increase in Turkey’s 2017 population of 81,745,000. Such a large, sudden addition warrants deeper analysis of the demographic, economic, social, and political effects that displaced Syrians are having on Turkish society. DEMOGRAPHIC IMPACT T he influx of Syrian refugees between 2011 and 2017 is Turkey’s most significant demographic shift since the 1923-4 “population exchange” with Greece. The government opened the doors to people escaping the Assad regime’s brutality in April 2011, and one million had fled across the border by September 2014. A year later, the number doubled to two million, then reached three million in 2017. According to the UN, 1,926,987 of these Syrians are male, 1,627,085 are female, and more than a million are under the age of ten.

İlk olarak ne zaman ve kim- ler tarafından kurulduğu bilinmeyen Harran’ın bilinen tarihi yak- laşık olarak MÖ ikibinlere kadar gidiyor. Harran’ın hemen yanı başında MÖ 4. yüzyılda bir garnizon şehri olarak kurulan Urfa ise önce Harran’a siyasal ve kültürel anlamda rakip olmuş daha sonra MİLEL VE NİHAL inanç, kültür ve mitoloji araştırmaları dergisi yıl 3 sayı 1-2 Aralık 2005 - Haziran 2006 Kısa Yazılar da MS üçüncü yüzyıldan itibaren Harran’ın önüne geçmiştir. Bu rekabet, Moğolların Harran’ı yerle bir ettiği ve orada yaşayanları Mardin ve diğer illere sürdüğü 13. yüzyılda son bulmuştur. O tarihten sonra bir daha Harran eski ihtişamına hiç kavuşamamıştır. Bugün de küçük bir yerleşim yeri olarak varlığını devam ettirmek- tedir. Harran Anadolu’daki en eski paganist kültüre, Ay Tanrısı Sin kültüne, ev sahipliği yapmanın yanı sıra Ortaçağda içinde barın- dırdığı felsefe okullarıyla özellikle Yunan felsefesinin doğuya ta- şınmasında önemli bir rol üstlenmiştir. İslam dünyasında yetişen Müslüman ya da diğer dinlere mensup pek çok bilim adamı bir şekilde Harran’la ilişki içerisinde olmuştur. Tarihin tozlu sayfaları arasında kalan Harran’a dair olan bilgi- lerin ve bugün güneyden esen çöl rüzgarlarının getirdiği kumlar altında kalan Harran kalıntılarının –gerek Sin kültüyle ilgili olan mabetler ve gerekse Müslümanlarla ilgili olan Harran kalesi ve Ulu Cami- açığa çıkarılması açısından son derece önemli bir sem- pozyum icra edilmiştir.

    1 MARDİN FROM TALES TO LEGENDS 2 künye 3 MARDİN FROM TALES TO LEGENDS 4 Introduction Mesopotamia is among those few names in the world that almost everyone is familiar with. Think of a region that is the birthplace of many tools, philosophies, systems and religions. Think of a region that so much that it pioneered has been adopted throughout the world and has played such an important role in shaping everyday lives. Imagine a place which witnessed so much for the first time: first writing system, first state, first city, first water irrigation sysems, first law and many more. Mardin situated right at the centre of this incredibly rich region can therefore be seen as a fortunate city, blessed in history. It has Anatolia on one side and Mesopotamia on the other, an ancient region which transported so many innovations that had originated in the Middle East to the western world. Despite the common assumption, the word Mesopotamia is not of Middle Eastern origin. It comes from the ancient Greek root words mesos (middle) and potamia (rivers) literally meaning “(land) between rivers.” It is curious that although writing was introduced in the region almost 3000 years earlier than in Greece, the region’s name is of Greek origin rather than a Middle Eastern language. In Syriac, Mesopotamia is called Beth Nahrin. Composed of the words beth (house, land) and nahrin (two rivers), it literally means “the land of/between two rivers.” Based on this, it can be deduced that the region was named not by the Greek civilizations of the west but by the people of the region themselves.
