The Innes Smith Medical Portrait Collection A Descriptive Catalogue by Lawrence Aspden Department of Special Collections and Archives The University of Sheffield Library January 2002 The Innes Smith Medical Portrait Collection in the University of Sheffield Library This notable Collection comprises 312 images. Almost all are portraits (of men - sitters are in fact exclusively male, which, given the historical nature of the subject matter is not too surprising) in medical or associated fields, together with, in a few cases, either representations of medical institutions or of artistic works on medical subjects. Details of the origin of the Collection are given on the foregoing collection level description, but it should perhaps be mentioned here that the original Collection was rather larger than it is at present, some of it being disposed of by Dr. Innes Smith privately before the present body of work was acquired by the University of Sheffield Library. Nonetheless it is thought likely that the Collection is the most complete of its kind in Britain after the much larger collection of portraits in the Wellcome Institute of Medical History, though it is noteworthy that around half the images are either not recorded, or appear to differ significantly from, those listed in Renate Burgess’s important work Portraits of doctors and scientists in the Wellcome Institute of the History of Medicine: a catalogue (1973). Where examples are recorded by Burgess a considerable debt must be acknowledged for the accompanying biographical and other information; otherwise, additional information has been supplied from other available sources. Portraits not listed by Burgess, or which appear to vary from those recorded; are described respectively as ‘not in Burgess’ or ‘cf. Burgess’ in the relevant records. In Dr Innes Smith’s original brief typescript catalogue of his Collection portraits were not numbered but arranged in various categories by image type. The ‘Innes Smith numbers’ noted in the present records were therefore supplied later by SUL to aid identification within the original list. This new catalogue is based on an alphabetical arrangement of the portraits by sitter, institution or art work, and the new ‘Reference numbers’ reflect that order, whilst a second number in parentheses indicates the Solander box in which each is stored. The opportunity has been taken to include more descriptive information about the portraits than Burgess routinely provides, on the grounds that it might prove useful to historians in various fields, though, as with Burgess, academic qualifications are restricted to those relating to medicine and science. No attempt has been made to estimate the age of sitters, but some indication of age may be gleaned from a sitter’s hair condition, which is noted in many cases, and which offers some guidance especially where a portrait is undated. As far as biographical information is concerned this catalogue is not intended to be any sort of definitive account of sitters, but merely includes such information as has been reasonably readily available. Note that dimensions given are normally for the actual portrait within the published document, excluding surrounding material. However, in some cases where this is impractical, such as for vignettes, the page dimension may be given instead; or for small oval portraits within a larger image the dimension for the whole page may be given in addition to the portrait size. A few anomalies remain. Four portraits not forming part of the original Innes Smith Collection (i.e. obtained from other sources) have been added latterly by SUL, such cases being identified in the note field (nos. 65, 141, 149, 153). And it has proved impossible so far to identify one of the portraits within the original Innes Smith listing, either because Innes Smith had not recorded it at the time of the disposal of his Collection or possibly due to information being lost when the collection was repaired and conserved some years ago: this example appears at the end of the new list under the heading [Unidentified] (no. 312). It appears that a few portraits were collected in error, as they appear to have no connection with medicine or allied sciences other than a similarity of name with medical men of their time, though no obvious reason has come to light for the presence of the fine portrait of Edmund Denison, a barrister associated with the Great Northern Railway (no. 85). Such oddities have been included below on the grounds that they do after all form part of Innes Smith’s original Collection.
