Some are totally a velvety maroon color and others are variants of velvety maroon and white. Following a spate of tropes from Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and odd elements of Doctor Who, the story begins with a bored young girl who finds herself whisked off to a world in which Ghosts vaporous, grey creatures are devouring its inhabitants. All these elements are held together by Larry Learmonth's pen and ink drawings — most of which are in black and white and some of which are colored. Yes and no; adults will probably be bored unless they read it as a child but I think it has enough childish glee for a preteenager to enjoy, which to be fair is what would really matter to the author as they are the intended audience. Nation manages manages to evoke an incredible sense of wonder and whimsy, and despite the obvious comparisons to Baum's Oz , the book manages to duck any accusations of mimicry by way of sheer inventiveness. • Whovians Can Get Their Fix with a 'Doctor Who
Whovians can get their fix with a ‘Doctor Whoʼ class at Syracuse University - The Washington Post 2/17/18, 432 PM The Washington Post Morning Mix Whovians can get their fix with a ‘Doctor Who’ class at Syracuse University By Soraya Nadia McDonald November 4, 2014 A Syracuse professor of digital and social media is offering a class based on the long- running British science fiction series “Doctor Who.” Professor Anthony Rotolo plans to take an exhaustive look at the wildly popular British series, which started in 1963 as a children’s show and was relaunched in 2005. How’s this hypothetical incentive for class participation: At Syracuse, if you answer a trivia question about “Doctor Who” correctly, you could net yourself a 3-D printed TARDIS or a miniature Dalek (one that won’t destroy everything in its path, of course). For non-Whovians: The Dalek are a particularly pernicious alien race set on destroying everything. They hate Doctor Who. The TARDIS is the vehicle, disguised as a 1960s London police call box, the Doctor uses to travel through space and time. Also worth knowing: The Doctor is able to die and regenerate himself in a different body, a detail that’s allowed 12 actors to play him in a 50-year span. The show is currently on its 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Julia Franco First Year Seminar Science Fiction Tuesday 9:30-10:45/ Friday 9:30-12:15 Allegories in Time and Space1 On November 23rd 1963, the BBC launched their new TV show Doctor Who. They did not anticipate the cultural phenomenon.what would grow out of their low budget show with cheesy special effects. British children were enchanted by William Hartnal’s Doctor and his companions: Ian, Barbara and Susan, and gleefully scared by the fearsome salt shakers of doom: The Daleks. The stories were anywhere from 4 to 12 parts, each around 25 minutes and were serialized weekly. But lying beneath the light hearted self resolving stories ran deeper elements reflecting attitudes towards history and current events. Deeply rooted in the series was the allegory to World War II. The Daleks take the place of the Nazis and the Time Lords therefore fill the opposing role of the Alliance. At many points, the story reads as if it is a future history of what would have happen if the Nazis had won World War II. This tapped into the subconscious fears of the nation as the war was still fresh in the minds of the parents of Britain. But also tied into the contemporary fears of the Cold War and the Soviet threat. These allegorical elements along with the characters in Doctor Who, such as the Daleks and the Time Lords, that correspond to actual historical events and people make the show what it is today: timeless and timely. The Daleks would not exist if not for one man- Terry Nation.

One would be given five episodes to direct and the other two would be given four each. Thus Pennant Roberts was the main director of the first series. The idea was first taken by Terry Nation to Andy Osborne, Head of Series at the BBC in late 1973 (see interview with Terry Nation). The series was something that Nation had wanted to do for some time and Andy Osborne received the idea with great enthusiasm and told Nation to go ahead and do it. By the time Survivors went into production, Ronnie Marsh was Head of Series, and he was much less enthusiastic. This has always been a problem for making any television series. Executives often change along the way and wish to promote programmes in line with their own personal tastes and there will be a period when the new incumbent has to inherit a whole host of projects from his predecessors, and this is what happened with Ronnie Marsh and Survivors.

  • The Hinchcliffe/Holmes Era of Doctor Who (1975-77) Matt Hills
‘Gothic’ Body Parts in a ‘Postmodern’ Body of Work? The Hinchcliffe/Holmes Era of Doctor Who (1975-77) Matt Hills (1) The names Philip Hinchcliffe and Robert Holmes may not be greatly familiar to many academic readers of this volume, unless, that is, they also happen to be fans of the (1963-1989, 1996, 2005-) BBC TV series Doctor Who. Hinchcliffe was the producer of this series on all episodes originally transmitted in the UK between 25/1/1975 and 2/4/77, while Holmes was script editor on all material broadcast between 28/12/74 and 17/12/77. However, he went un-credited in this role on stories where he was named as writer, due to BBC regulations which forbade script editors to commission from themselves (see Howe and Walker, 1998). In story terms, Philip Hinchcliffe produced ‘The Ark in Space’ through to ‘The Talons of Weng-Chiang’, whilst Holmes script-edited stories running from ‘Robot’ through to ‘The Sun Makers’ (1977). Under Hinchcliffe as producer, Holmes also wrote ‘The Ark in Space’, ‘The Deadly Assassin’ and ‘The Talons of Weng-Chiang’, and effectively wrote, or at least heavily reworked, ‘The Pyramids of Mars’ and ‘The Brain of Morbius’ (on-screen, these were attributed to the pseudonyms Stephen Harris and Robin Bland). Today, Philip Hinchcliffe is a regular contributor to DVD commentaries and features accompanying ‘his’ Doctor Who stories. Robert Holmes passed away on 24th May, 1986: his overall contribution to Doctor Who is the subject of a documentary on the DVD release of the (1985) story ‘The Two Doctors’.

  • 'Went the Day of the Daleks Well?' an Investigation Into the Role Of
Tony Keen ‘Invasion narratives in British television Science Fiction’ ‘Went the Day of the Daleks well?’ An investigation into the role of invasion narratives in shaping 1950s and 1960s British television Science Fiction, as shown in Quater- mass, Doctor Who and UFO If the function of art is to hold a mirror up to society, then science fiction (sf), through the distorted reflection it offers, allows the examination of aspects of society that might otherwise be too uncomfortable to confront. This essay aims to look at how invasion narratives, stories concerned with the invasion of Britain from outside, shaped three British science fiction series, and how those series interro- gated the narratives. The series will primarily be examined through aesthetic and social ap- proaches. Particular areas to be explored include the embracing and subverting of common assumptions about Britain’s attitude to invasion, and the differing attitudes to the military displayed. Introduction As an island nation, the prospect of invasion has always occupied a prominent place in the British popular imagination. According to Sellar and Yeatman, the two memorable dates in history are 55 BC and 1066, the dates of the invasions of Julius Caesar and William the Con- queror.1 Subsequent events such as the Spanish Armada of 1588 are also well-known mo- ments in history. It is inevitable that the prospect of invasion should produce speculative literature. Some works appeared around the time of Napoleon’s threatened invasion of 1803,2 but ‘invasion literature’ as a literary genre emerged out of the growing market for novels and short-story magazines, and is generally considered to have begun with the appearance of George Tomp- kyns Chesney’s 1871 story ‘The Battle of Dorking’,3 a story of the German conquest of Eng- land, prompted by the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871.
