Introduction
Introduction Imagine you’re invited to a party. You arrive at the venue, slip past security, and Margaret Atwood is there; so are Michael Ondaatje, Anne Carson, and Dionne Brand. CanLit’s luminaries surround you, and having never brushed elbows with so many prominent writers, you turn paparazzi and start taking photographs in earnest. Point and click—easy to tell who monopolizes the spotlight and who falls back. It’s only once you focus manually, looking for an unconventional angle, that you begin to notice others: a younger, more anonymous crowd pushing at the margins, trying to bypass the guest list. So you raise your camera to include them too, at least those close enough to see clearly. Some of the shots will turn out perfectly—balanced composition, candid expressions that capture the palpable energy of the event. Some won’t. The blur of time will seep in, poor exposure rendering the photographs unusable. You might think I’m describing a Griffin Poetry Prize gala. I am, of course, but this is also the plight of prospective anthologists. Working without the benefit of hindsight, anthologists are responsible for scouting talent in little magazines, hard-to-find books, and critical periodicals. Canonization is a gamble, and time and time again Canadian editors have either gone all in or hedged their bets, offering up both generation defining compilations and remixed versions of established texts. Review of The Response of Weeds: A Misplacement of Black Poetry on the Prairies , by Bertrand Bickersteth (Edmonton: NeWest Press, 2020) 88 pp. paper. The dedication is intended for anyone who has had to answer to various versions of "where are you from?" In "Grown in Alberta", identity relies on the image of a "simulacrum", such as an image or representation of someone or something, an unsatisfactory imitation or substitute. In this instance, the poet turns to Michigan, where he asked the question but in Alberta, by comparison, he will always be asked. So his attention shifts from the hand, to the map, and then back to the hand. He turns to the Canadian prairies and his dream of an empty grain elevator. He recounts how "a landscape was hinted in its spaces." In "So What" which passes as a cheeky answer back, to "So, where are you from?", the poet acknowledges "I still mean here." Harlem farming was based on displaced aboriginal people but in Alberta it pertains to "the North on top", thus "(upside down)". Nomadic musicians reflect the seasons: "We read and reseed in spring". "Now I'm Looking, Now I'm Unaware" is a poem in which the comparison with Michigan is distinctive because the poet possesses "the would-be echo", the half-rhyme "stuck" and "struck" are contrasted, and he concludes "I am comparing this field/ to one in Alberta/ burnished gold and flat." In "Harlem Farming", the poet catalogues the landmarks in New York City, until he reaches the conclusion held in suspense, "North of Harlem/farming/in Saskatchewan and Alberta//Obviously". -

Parliamentary Poet Laureate POETRY CONNECTION: LINK UP WITH CANADIAN POETRY Sina Queyras (1963 – ) is a poet, novelist and the founder and editor of Lemon Hound www.lemonhound.com, a very active poetry and poetics website. Her third collection of poetry, Lemon Hound (Coach House Books, 2006), received the Pat Lowther Award and a Lambda Literary Award. In 2005, she edited Open Field: 30 Contemporary Canadian Poets (Persea Books), an anthology of Canadian poetry published by a U.S. press. She later edited Canadian Strange, a folio of contemporary Canadian writing for Drunken Boat, where she is a contributing editor. From 2005 to 2007, Queyras co-curated the Belladonna* reading series in New York. Her most recent work, Expressway, was written mainly in Calgary, while she was the Markin-Flanagan Writer-in-Residence. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies, including Joyland | A hub for short fiction. She teaches creative writing at Concordia University in Montreal, and has taught at Haverford College and Rutgers University.1 Though she works primarily as a poet and editor, her novel Autobiography of Childhood (Coach House Books, 2011) has garnered significant praise.
