A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007
A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007. Puremusic.com) Raw talent vs. expensive packaging is always a pleasant surprise in the entertainment business. Brandi Carlile is the very rare exception to the rule; she and her band made their own EP, piece by piece with their own money, and Columbia ended up buying it and putting it out. Rolling Stone chose her as one of the 10 Artists to Watch in 2005. The subsequent Columbia full length debut CD contained new versions of a number of the songs from the EP. Relentless gigging leading up to the EP and through the debut had already moved her through various styles with her running twin partners, the Hanseroth Brothers. Tim and Phil had had a hard rock band called The Fighting Machinists, and they bring that honed edge to the BC sound. She is not only a vocalist that can literally do it all, the band itself moves fluidly and convincingly from flat out country right through edgy pop radio rock. She's the only artist you can see on CMT whose main cited influences are Elton John, k.d. lang, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead. One hears all the time now about how acts getting tunes on Grey's Anatomy can practically launch their career, but in BC's case, there was a Grey's episode that actually debuted a version of the video for Brandi's big song "The Story." Overall, no less than four of her songs have been used in the show. She's hot, super talented, and a driven workaholic. -
Proximity:The Name of the Ratings Game Artículo Resumen Stig Hjarvard
Proximity:The Name of the Ratings Game Artículo Resumen Stig Hjarvard Paper presented to Plenary Conference on European Media in Transition: Global and Comparative Perspectives 24-27 August 2000, Il Ciocco, Italy To appear in Nordicom Review, Special issue, no. 2, 2000, Gothenburg: Nordicom. ZER specially thanks Nordicom Review that has allowed the publishing of the article in this issue. Abstract: Due to deregulation of the broadcasting industry, television news has changed considerably during the last 10-15 years. This paper reports on a major study of changes in the Danish television news as regards news content, formats and editorial policies. In particular, the paper focuses on the development of proximity as a key news value that allows newsrooms to develop a closer relationship with their viewers. However, the editorial emphasis on proximity in selection of news stories, narrative and enunciative structure also entails a redefinition of the social character of news. Finally, the paper discusses these editorial changes in relation to broader changes in public discourse in Denmark, notably the increase in media generated populism and the rise of the "modern province". The concept of proximity, which subsequently became very modern in all news reporting, was something we were born with. Jens Gaardbo, Editor in Chief, TV2 s News Department1 In 1988, nationwide television service on a second channel was introduced in Denmark. Danmarks Radio's (DR) monopoly was broken. The newcomer, TV2, was given public service obligations, but services were to be financed primarily by the sale of air time to advertisers. News services were the channel’s ’flagship’, and a good deal of energy and resources were put into news production. -

The Geopolitics of Nordic Television Drama
NORDICOM REVIEW Introduction Dark Screens: The geopolitics of Nordic television drama Pei-Sze Chow,I Robert A. Saunders,II & Anne Marit WaadeI I Media & Journalism, School of Communication and Culture, Aarhus University, Denmark II Department of History, Politics and Geography, Farmingdale State College (SUNY), USA This special collection of articles emerged from a two-day workshop on the topic “Nor- dic Noir, Geopolitics, and the North” held at Aarhus University, Denmark, 4–5 October 2018. Recognising the unabating popularity of the Nordic Noir genre, the workshop sought to extend current media-cultural discussions of Nordic crime television drama to critically assess how topical geopolitical developments both influence and are inter- rogated within these fictional narratives. The genesis of this workshop arose from the intersections between the research interests of this special issue’s three editors, building on Anne Marit Waade’s work on the production, aesthetics, and distribution of Nordic Noir television drama, Pei-Sze Chow’s research on the audiovisual representations of transnational regions in Scandinavia, and Robert A. Saunders’s scholarship on the popu- lar culture-world politics continuum, and more specifically his typology of geopolitical television. Over two days of presentations and discussions, participants worked to bridge the gap between diverse but cognate disciplines such as Scandinavian studies, film and television, literature, geography, and international relations (IR). Generously supported by the pan-Nordic research consortium ReNEW (Reimagin- ing Norden in an Evolving World), which is funded by NordForsk through the Nordic University Hubs initiative, our workshop brought together 21 researchers from across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Poland, the US, and the UK. -
