2.5. Diagnostic Notes **Adult**

**Male**: Wingspan of male 32-34mm. Upperside. Forewing with ground colour purplish blue, much suffused with silvery androconial scales; black terminal band narrow but distinct; cilia greyish white. Hindwing with ground colour, androconial scales and terminal dark band as on forewing; vein 2 extended into a slender, white-tipped black tail c.2.5mm long; black subterminal spots in space Ib and space 2. Underside. Bistre- brown traversed by numerous pale cream-coloured streaks, the broadest, especially on hindwing, forming a distinct postdiscal fascia; hindwing with tornal black spots positioned as on upperside, but ringed with turquoise blue.

**Female**: Upperside. Forewing with ground colour blackish brown; basal and discal area lustrous purple. Hindwing with similar ground colour but only basal area irrorate purple; an indistinct slightly paler postmedian fascia; tornal black spots encircled with white and violet and sometimes edged orange proximally; often additional obscure black submarginal spots in spaces 3 and 4. Underside as in male. Variation. Considerable variation in size, especially in females, the blue of the forewing may range from dull purplish to ultramarine.

**Egg**

Very small, c.0.5mm in diameter, a compressed spheroid, with micropyle sunken and whole surface covered with fine reticulations.

**Larva**

Full-fed c. 15mm long, dark green but becoming russet.

**Pupa**

11-13mm long, pale pink at first, becoming cream-coloured before emergence, speckled and blotched in varying degrees with brown.
