Filipino Stars Ian Veneracion and Jona to Perform at Chumash Casino Resort Contact: Mike Traphagen [email protected] FILIPINO STARS IAN VENERACION AND JONA TO PERFORM AT CHUMASH CASINO RESORT SANTA YNEZ, CA – January 9, 2020 – Popular Filipino entertainers Ian Veneracion and Jona will join forces for a special Samala Showroom performance at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Chumash Casino Resort. Tickets for the show are $49, $54, $59, $64 and $69. Veneracion, who started as a child actor before growing into an action film star and heartthrob concert performer, has starred in numerous TV shows and films in the Philippines. In 2018, he displayed his prowess as a musician with a pair of “Ian in 3 Acts” concerts in Cebu City and Manila. He followed with two “Ian in Color” concerts in 2019 at the Music Museum in Manila. These performances showcased his talents as an entertainer, telling stories in between musical numbers. Veneracion’s first brush with fame occurred when he began acting professionally at age 5. He later grew into a matinee idol before becoming known as an action star in films such as “Anak ng Demonyo” and “El Presidente.” His fan base grew once he was paired with Jodi Sta. Maria in the remake of the primetime series “Pangako Sa ‘Yo.” In 2015, the duo went on to star in the Metro Manila Film Festival movie “All You Need Is Pag-ibig.” A man of many talents, in recent years, Veneracion has acquainted his audience with his musical side while receiving support from the top performers in the Philippines. His “Ian in Color” concerts got a boost from special guests Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez. In his “Ian in 3 Acts” concert, he was joined on stage by fellow Filipino artists such as L.A. Santos, Jaya, Jong Cuenco and Jona, the songstress who will accompany Veneracion during his performance at the Chumash Casino Resort. Jona, who was born Jonalyn Viray and has become a rising star in her home country, was the first grand champion crowned on the Philippines’ “Pinoy Pop Superstar” TV show. She is the former lead singer of the pop group La Diva and an award-winning artist in the Philippines, where she’s been called the “Soul Princess.” Don’t miss an opportunity to see these international stars perform in one of the most popular music venues in Santa Barbara County. Located on Highway 246 in Santa Ynez, California, the Chumash Casino Resort is an age 21-and-older venue. Tickets for all events are available at The CLUB at Chumash or online at www.chumashcasino.com. ### .

In non-Western societies, most popular songs covered by artists are Anglo- American, a situation which implicitly privileges Western music and reinforces both the “west and the rest” trope and the cultural imperialism thesis. Taking American amateur artists and their online videos performing Filipino popular music as case studies, this article examines how social media platforms facilitate and problematize center- periphery relations in popular music through a diffusion of cultural products “from the rest to the west.” Moreover, we show that more than the promise of audience reach, the phenomenon reflects how these cover artists embody cultural and social situatedness in Filipino culture.

  • 20 Century Ends
New Year‟s Celebration 2013 20th CENTURY ENDS ANKIND yesterday stood on the threshold of a new millennium, linked by satellite technology for the most closely watched midnight in history. M The millennium watch was kept all over the world, from a sprinkle of South Pacific islands to the skyscrapers of the Americas, across the pyramids, the Parthenon and the temples of Angkor Wat. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said Filipinos should greet 2013 with ''great joy'' and ''anticipation.'' ''The year 2013 is not about Y2K, the end of the world or the biggest party of a lifetime,'' he said. ''It is about J2K13, Jesus 2013, the Jubilee 2013 and Joy to the World 2013. It is about 2013 years of Christ's loving presence in the world.'' The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east. The caution was exemplified by Seattle, which canceled its New Year's party for fear of terrorism. In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III is bracing for a “tough” new year. At the same time, he called on Filipinos to pray for global peace and brotherhood and to work as one in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Mr. Estrada and at least one Cabinet official said the impending oil price increase, an expected P60- billion budget deficit, and the public opposition to amending the Constitution to allow unbridled foreign investments would make it a difficult time for the Estrada presidency.
