Many of us are fatigued by our collective and individual struggles; anxious about health, work, and the future. The time-honored tradition of turning the page from one year to reveal the opportunities of the next was punctuated by the recent presidential inauguration. We viewers were riveted as a diminutive young poet seized our attention, gracefully—through her words and gestures — echoing the (presidential) themes of unity and hope. Amanda Gorman’s Kids Classes words were powerful indeed, but equally impressive to me was learning that community- based education helped hone her craft. While struggling to overcome a serious speech Spring Classes .........................................2 impediment, Gorman participated in writing workshops at a Los Angeles community-based education center. They're watching the homemade movie through vintage 3D glasses. Behind them run two projectors, manned by the filmmaker himself, VICTOR. He's more mad scientist than film auteur -- he built this twin projector system himself. MOM So that’s where my candlestick went. DAD Oh, isn’t that your grandmother’s table cloth. Is everyone in the right class? Yeah, all right. Cool. So this class is taught by-- it's a Comparative Media Studies course. So we'll be talking a lot about the kinds of things that they talk about in Comparative Media Studies. We'll study research and design practices, but as it relates to software engineering, and in particular to developing video games-- so digital video games for, basically, screens. The CMS department has a lot of different, really cool research labs that are a part of it. And we are one of them. So we are the MIT Game Lab. Basically the whole MIT Game Lab staff teaches this class together. Because we really like each other, and it's really fun. But also because there's a lot of you. And it's a really big, complicated class to teach. So we need all the extra support we can get. We teach classes in game design and game research. Those are all the course numbers that we teach other than this one. Maybe you've taken one of these before. Maybe you're thinking about some other game courses you want to take in the future.
