It is about an obsessive stalker, but it sounds like a love song. Some people even used it as their wedding song. Sting wrote this after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomelty. The middle of the song was finished last. They didn't know what to do with it until Sting sat at a piano and started hitting the same key over and over. That became the basis for the missing section. This won Grammys in 1984 for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocal. P. Diddy (known as Puff Daddy at the time), sampled this on "I'll Be Missing You," his 1997 tribute to rapper Notorious B.I.G. Sting didn't know about the sample until after the song was released. He ended up making lots of money from it, claiming he put some of his kids through college with the proceeds. Sting performed "I'll Be Missing You" with P. Diddy at the MTV Video Music Awards, and the two remain friends. Sting re-wrote the lyrics when he performed this in 2005 at Live 8, a set of concerts organized by Bob Geldof to increase activism and demand more aid for Africa. Sting included the line, "We'll be watching you" to mean the world would be keeping an eye on the politicians making critical decisions on the fate of Africa. Broken Music, or the Wondrous Story of How a Fine Voice Was Delivered from the Treacherous Clutches of Deception and Returned to Itself Michele Piumini 1 I It may seem a million miles away... A Gordon Matthew Sumner, buona voce. Such is the dedication on a book that some of you may chance to have. To those who do, here’s a question and a plea. Question: you know who Gordon Matthew Sumner is, don’t you? The mystery will soon be solved anyway. Plea: the book, in a way, was where it all began. The idea is saving author and title till the end, so keep it quiet! Preamble, hopefully not too long. Broken Music, which is not the book at issue, is a dream that only ten years ago I’d never have dared to cherish. To those who enquire about my passions, I promptly reply, in alphabetical order: language, and music. My passion for language (as in studying foreign languages, but also and mostly as the investigation of language as a human faculty) is, at least partially, soon explained: for familiar reasons, I grew up among words, written, read out and narrated. For less familiar reasons (I couldn’t pin them down even though I’ve known myself for thirty- one years), my love for words has taken a different and, so to speak, more technical path. I was one of those rare examples of students who face sentence analysis and the scrutiny of grammar subtleties – whether Italian, English, Greek, or Latin – with ecstatic and obsessive devotion.

1 ORPHANS p there, the atmosphere was thin. They lived in a bubble, pro- U tected from the rigors of the world but also trapped inside a pressurized container that amplifi ed every thought, every action, every sound. The odds of ever reaching that rarefi ed position had been stacked heavily against them. But somehow they made it, catapulted to the stars in a junk bucket powered by hubris and jury-rigged for success. The junk bucketCOPYRIGHTED transformed into a juggernaut MATERIAL that hurtled around the globe two, three, four times over. Inside, an umbilical cord con- nected all three occupants, sustaining them while constraining all movement. As time went on, they yearned for individual freedom. They struggled, pushed and pulled against one another until, eventu- ally, the cord snapped. The juggernaut ran out of fuel and ground to a halt. And there it remained for twenty-fi ve years, like a rusted satellite 1 cc01.indd01.indd 1 88/25/09/25/09 33:01:12:01:12 PPMM 2 WALKING ON THE MOON fl oating in space; always visible but in perpetual stasis, evidence of a distant memory. A monument to the time when the Police were the biggest band in the world. Pop music is a dream. The promise of a perfect moment deferred. The music business is a machine in perpetual motion, passion conscripted into the service of industry. Music culture is born of tempestuous change and an incestuous genealogy. Each iteration of genre birthed by, but also forged in reaction to, the one before. Each owing a debt for its existence to the last.
