The team, consisting of Peter Hollands - Justin Howard, Max Henbest - Nathan Howard, and Ellena Moskovsky - Lauren Travis, would contest the 3rd World Youth Open Bridge Championships in Atlanta, USA, and the 19th Asia Pacific Bridge Federation Youth Championships in Wuhan, China. Although the team was missing some strong players from previous years, we had high hopes going into both tournaments. On board 3 of the first session, I opened 3♣ on the South cards. When West decided to make a takeout double, Ellena had an easy redouble, and the opponents were in trouble. 3♣XX came back around to West, who couldn’t know that this was their best spot (although he has to lead a heart to take the contract off). He bid 3♦, which was doubled, and they ended up in 3♥X. When we got +500 from that, it was good for a top board and a write-up in the next day’s bulletin. I led the ♥6, which Ellena won. She tried to cash another heart, which was ruffed by declarer. He crossed to dummy with a club and ran the ♠Q. When Ellena didn’t cover, Uslupehlivan deduced that she had ♠K x x x. He played on diamonds, with Ellena winning the third round. She returned another heart, ruffed by South, who now played ♣K. If she pitches, (Travis) ♣ A 6 3 2 (Moskovsky) he leads another club to the A, and her fate is the same. ♠ 8 N ♠ K 7 4 Well done Sarper! ♥ Q ♥ J 4 Moskovsky-Travis and Hollands-Howard qualified for the W E ♦ - ♦ - pairs final, while Henbest-Howard played in the ♣ J T7 S ♣ - consolation and came 2nd. ♠ A J In session 4 of the final, I picked up ♠A104 ♥A108752 ♦6 ♣J83. ♥ - Imagine my surprise when my LHO opened 2♥ at all vul, ♦ K partner made a takeout double, and everyone passed: ♣ K 8 (Uslupehlivan) Qualifying Ellena led ♣A followed by a diamond switch, won in B25 ♠ J N/E-W dummy. A small spade was led and I won ace. I led ♥ K J 9 6 4 3 another club to Ellena’s queen and she led a diamond ♦ J 7 4 2 for me to ruff. A third club followed, ruffed by declarer, (Travis) ♣ 6 2 (Moskovsky) who played a small heart, won by Ellena’s queen. When he led ♥K and I ducked, he was endplayed ♣ J 8 3 S ♣ AK Q and had to go -1100. ♠ K 9 8 7 6 3 ♥ - ♦ A K After the 60 boards of Finals, the results were: ♣ T 9 7 5 4 1 Massimiliano Di Franco - Gabriele Zanasi (Italy) 57.81% 2 Erkmen Aydogdu - Akin Koçlar (Turkey) 57.48% 3 Alex Prairie - Sylvia Shi (USA) 57.32% 4 Ellena Moskovsky - Lauren Travis (Australia) 53.61% 5 Peter Hollands - Justin Howard (Australia) 53.08% We moved on to the Swiss/Knockout Teams: Youth Pairs Winners: Zanasi and Di Franco Swiss Teams Although we play a 15-17 1NT opening, Ellena and I B29 ♠ J 6 4 have the agreement that we don’t open 1NT on 17 N/All ♥ K J 5 4 counts with 4 cards in both majors, so that we miss ♦ J 3 fewer 4M contracts. (Travis) ♣ J 5 3 2 (Moskovsky) On this hand from round 3 of the Swiss Teams, she took ♠ 9 2 N ♠ A Q5 3 the idea a little further, and opened 1♣ on her 16 count. ♥ T 9 7 ♥ 8 6 3 2 W E I bid 2♦, a weak jump shift, and Ellena quickly bid 3NT ♦ A 8 7 6 5 4 ♦ K 2 (‘bid game, make game, win imps’), hoping I had ♣Q 7 S ♣ A K T ♦AQxxxx or slightly worse diamonds with an outside ♠ KT 8 7 entry.

    ADVANCED TIPS In card play there is the rule "8 ever 9 never", whereby if you have only eight cards in suit and you are looking for the Queen it is best to finesse and if you have 9 then you play for drop. Larry Cohen has turned this rule on its head for COMPETITIVE BIDDING and the rule he has come up with is totally the opposite. 1 In competitive bidding 8 never 9 ever- when you and your partner are known to hold only an eight card trump fit don't compete to 3 level when the opponents are pushing you up But with a 9 card fit then take the push to the 3 level- further examples of this can be found in his Bols tip If declarer or dummy has bid two suits and you are strong in one of the suits then lead a trump. The reason 2 for this is that declarer could very easily try and ruff this suit out and by leading a trump you are removing two trumps. If you have made a limit bid, then be respectful and leave all decisions to partner - Don't bid again unless 3 forced or invited If you think you are in a good contract don't now be silly and go for an overtrick when making your contract is going to produce all the Match points. The corollary applies that if you think you are in lousy 4 contract, maybe 3NT and you think everybody else will be in 4S making an overtrick, Now you have to go for that overtrick in order to compete for some sort of reasonable score.

Two blitzes in their final two matches lifted CHINA-Beijing (Wang Kui, Cheng Zhe, Shi Zhengjun, Ju Chuancheng, Shi Jianxin, Fan Xinyan) from their fifth-place spot after Day One to the number two qualifying slot with a score of 153 VPs. And ENGLAND+(Hackett) (Paul Hackett, Geir Helgemo, Justin Hackett, Jason Hackett, John Armstrong) vaulted from the 9th/10th spot after Day One to fifth after Match Seven to third at the final gun with 149 VPs.
