Tune: This tune by Cape Breton fiddle player, Shelly Campbell, was written for her sister when she got married. “The story is when my sister, Denise, got married she was the first of all us girls. I have three sisters. And her husband was the last of six kids to get married. My mother for a while thought none of us would. So she was the first to go in our family and he was the last to go in his.”

Bio: Born and raised in West Bay Road, Inverness County, Shelly has been playing traditional Cape Breton music for more than 20 years. She was influenced by local fiddlers Stephanie Wills, Theresa MacLellan, Gertie Coffin and Alex Francis MacKay to name a few. Shelly has been playing local concerts, pubs and festivals and is a popular player for dances. Although she usually stays close to home, Shelly has taught and played throughout the Maritimes, Ontario, Ireland, Scotland and Denmark. Shelly also has an avid interest in the Gaelic language and its preservation in Cape Breton and continues to work on her own fluency. She is currently teaching Junior High School math and science as well as Gaelic language grades 4-9. Shelly teaches private and group lessons and has been involved in the development of Fèis Cheap Breatuinn which is seeking to provide more opportunity for lessons and mentorship in traditional music, dance and language throughout Cape Breton. Shelly’s playing is powerful, lively and graceful and deeply rooted in the traditions she grew up listening to.

Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald (1914-1987) was a renowned fiddler. Fitzgerald was born on February 16 at White Point, Victoria County, Nova Scotia. Winston played radio shows and toured with Hank Snow for about two and a half years. In 1947, he formed a group called the "Radio Entertainers." The group recorded numerous 78s, as well as four LPs. Later, he played as part of the Cape Breton Symphony on The John Allan Cameron Show. A selection of Winstonʼs recordings has been reissued as Classic Cuts by Breton Books & Music. A large portion of his repertoire has been preserved in a book called Winston Fitzgerald: A Collection of Fiddle Tunes, issued by Cranford Publications.
