Student Services and Curriculum Development

The DIA continued to increase K–12 services in Wayne County and exceed service agreement targets for student and teacher participation. Field trip options expanded in response to teachers’ requests. Every guided tour engages students with hands-on activities, and 2nd grade classrooms are a newly added audience for guided visits.

Professional development connected K–12 educators with museum educators to explore student engagement strategies and/or to design specific curriculum resources in support of teachers’ learning goals. These collaboratively developed resources created experiences for students that utilized artwork in the museum as a resource for learning across the curriculum.

These resources are available on the website for use by all teachers. http://www.dia.org/learn/learning_resources.aspx

Community Group Art Making

Organizations participating in Community Group Art Making Program included the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, Piquette Square for Veterans, and the Luella Hannan Foundation. Sessions began with a Visual Thinking tour in the galleries, followed by an art-making experience in the studio. Learner-centered teaching was employed throughout each visit, engaging each participant at their own individual skill level while encouraging personal expression and reflection. Two four-week sessions were held in 2016.

The DIA hosted the eighth annual Community Group Show in the fall where participants shared their creative process and displayed their work.

DIA staff members also worked with residents at Piquette Square for Veterans on a collaborative mural project. Beginning with a museum visit in the spring, the project developed throughout the summer with preparatory drawings and paintings and resulted in the installation of eight-painted panels in the Piquette Square courtyard.

Led by muralist and DIA teaching artist, Vito Valdez, DIA art studio staff worked alongside Piquette Square veterans in the creation of this mural, guiding them to explore and express a sense of community through this collaborative project.
