John-Paul Himka is a professor of history at the University of Alberta. His monograph Religion and Nationality in Western Ukraine: The Greek Catholic Church and the Ruthenian National Movement in Galicia, 1867-1900 will be published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in 1999. David McDonald is an associate professor of history at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. A specialist in the institutional and intellectual history of the Russian Empire, he is the author of United Government and Foreign Policy in Russia, 1900- 1914 (Harvard University Press, 1992). JOLANTA T. Pekacz is a post-doctoral fellow at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Her monograph Conservative Tradition in Pre-Revolutionary France: Parisian Salon Women (New York: Peter Lang) will be published in 1999. Feodosii Steblii is a senior research fellow at the Institute of Ukrainian Studies (Lviv) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He is the author and editor of many publications in Galician history. Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2016 https://archive.org/details/journalofukraini232cana Introduction The cluster of four articles on Galicia in this issue of the Journal of Ukrainian Studies has its origin in a conference on “Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians in Galicia: 1772-1918” sponsored by the Institut fiir die Wissenschaften vom Menschen and held in Vienna on 26-28 June 1992. However, none of them were actually presented as papers at that conference. As one of the conference’s four “project co-ordinators,” I was charged with assembling articles to fill out the projected volume of conference papers. I had heard Jolanta Pgkacz’s paper at the University of Alberta and was impressed by her conceptualization of the “cultural public” of Galicia. It was a fresh approach, partly inspired by her explorations of French socio-cultural history, and I asked for it for the conference volume. I had directed Mark Baker’s M.A. thesis, which had a chapter on Lewis Namier and the problem of Eastern Galicia after World War I. Thematically it filled a major gap in the volume, since the war and its aftermath were absent from other contributions. Mark’s contribution fit the volume profile particularly well because the relations among Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews in Galicia figured so prominently in it. After completing his M.A. thesis, Mark moved on to Harvard and is working there on a Ph.D. dissertation on the Ukrainian revolution. In fact, he was doing archival research in Ukraine when he thoroughly revised his original text for inclusion in the volume. Feodosii Steblii, the dean of Galician historians in Ukraine, had participated in the Vienna conference, but had delivered a different paper than the one he eventually submitted for publication. I had been charged with acquiring his final Ukrainian text and seeing that it was translated into English. After accepting these three contributions for publication in the conference volume, I was informed that it was not going to be published as such; instead, most of the conference presentations, supplemented with additional articles on the history of Galician Jews, were to appear in a special issue of Polin, a journal devoted to Polish-Jewish relations. Consequently I had three excellent articles on Galicia that I was free to publish elsewhere, and I submitted them to the Journal of Ukrainian Studies. Encouraged by Roman Senkus, the Journal’s editor, I supplemented these original texts with a piece of my own that I thought made some interesting points on the formation and transformation of social strata; it had been published 2 previously, but only in Italian, in Quaderni storici 28, no. 3 (December 1993): 657-78. The particularities of Galicia remain important today. It is hoped that this cluster of articles will stimulate additional reflection and research on this aspect of the Ukrainian legacy. It was home to three peoples who might be regarded as archetypical representatives of the east-central European nations. Clustered more in the western part of the province, around Cracow, were the Poles, who retained a traditional elite—the gentry (szlachta )—and a strong tradition of statehood from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. They thus constituted a “historical nation” like the Hungarians; they owned the large estates throughout the crownland,

As a priest and bishop,he was a dedicated minister of the Lord in the Archeparchy for 65 years since his priestly ordination in 1955. We thank God for his life and raise prayers of gratitude for his service. The coronavirus pandemic, to which evidently the Archbishop succumbed at the age of 95, does not allow us to come together for the funeral. Thus, we are called to unite in prayer and spirit from our homes. When the danger for our clergy and faithful passes we will celebrate a requiem in which all can participate. In the name of our deceased Metropolitan, I thank all the bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful that worked with him over the many decades of his service in America. He is grateful to all of you, as he himself expressed during the joyful, warm celebration of his 95th birthday in October held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He appreciated the collegiality shown by Roman Catholic bishops, clergy and communities, as well as the fellowship shared with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. He valued the decades of cooperation with various community organizations. We are most grateful for the services and kindnesses rendered to the Metropolitan by Ukrainian and Roman Catholic chaplains, religious, and laypersons during the two decades of his retirement.     Pope Francis Appoints Most Rev. Borys Gudziak as new Metropolitan- Archbishop of the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia On Monday, February 18th, 2019, the Vatican Information Service announced that the Holy Father has appointed Most Rev. Borys Gudziak as Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians and Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in USA and thus concurring with the recommendation of the appointment offered by the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops, which met in September of 2018 in Lviv, Ukraine. The Archeparchy of Philadelphia was declared by Pope Francis as “sede vacante” following the resignation of Most Rev. Stefan Soroka on April 16, 2018. Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy was named by Pope Francis as the Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia until the appointment of the new Metropolitan- Archbishop. At the present time Most Rev. Borys Gudziak serves as the eparch of St. Volodymyr the Great Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy, which includes France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Switzerland. He is the founder and president of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. In addition, Archbishop Borys is the head of Department of External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The primary focus of the present dissertation is the current state of the Hutsul dialect, both in terms of social perception and the structural changes resulting from the dominance of the standard language in media and education. Currently very little is known about the contemporary grammatical structure of Hutsul. The present dissertation is the first long-term research project designed to define both key elements of synchronic Hutsul grammar, as well as diachronic change, with focus on variation and convergence in an environment of increasing close sustained contact with standard Ukrainian resulting from both a historically-based sense of ethnic identification, as well as modern economic realities facing the once isolated and self-sufficient Hutsuls. In addition, I will examine the sociolinguistic network lines which allow and impede linguistic assimilation, specifically in the situation of a minority population of high cultural valuation facing external linguistic assimilation pressures stemming from socio-political expediency.

The author emphasizes the importance of these sources for research on the history and culture of Polish Jews in the 17th and 18th centuries. He also specifies the types of documents related to Jewish issues authenticated in these books (e.g. manifestations and lawsuits, declarations of the Radom Tribunal), as well as current source publications and internet databases containing selected documents from Ukrainian archives. The Central State Historical Archive in Lviv (CDIAL) (known as the Bernadine Ar- chive) and the Central State Historical Archive in Kyiv (CDIAUK) both have exten- sive collections of records of the so-called castle courts (sądy grodzkie), also known as local Starost courts (sądy starościńskie) for the nobility: from the Bełz and Ruthe- nian Voivodeships in the Lviv archive; and from the Łuck, Podolia, Kyiv, and Bracław Voivodeships in the Kyiv archive. This is particularly important because – in the light of Jewish population counts taken in 1764–1765 for the purpose of poll tax assessment – these areas were highly populated by Jews.

    The 17th Meeting of the Baltic Division of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names Warszawa, 29 June – 01 July 2015 Maciej Zych Commission on Standardization of Geographical Names Outside the Republic of Poland Romanization rules for the Lemko (Ruthenian or Rusyn) language in Poland Lemkos (Ruthenians or Rusyns) is an ethnic minority which has been recognized in Poland on the basis of the Act of 6th January 2005 on national and ethnic minorities and on the regional languages. The act mentions, in addition to the Lemkos, 9 national minorities: Belorussian, Czech, Lithuanian, German, Armenian, Russian, Slovak, Ukrainian, and Jewish; 3 ethnic minorities – Karait, Roma, and Tartar; as well as one regional language – the Kashubian language. The Act lays down, among others, that traditional names in a minority language for localities, physiographic objects and streets may be used as “additional names” alongside geographic names established in the Polish language. To date (as of 1st June 2015), additional names have been introduced in 1204 localities and parts of them located in 57 communes. There were introduced: 27 Belarusian names, 359 German names, 779 Kashubian names, 9 Lemko names, and 30 Lithuanian names. Additional names in minority languages appear on road signs, they are also used on some maps. Pursuant to the Regulation of the Minister of Administration and Digitization of 14th February 2012 on the national register of geographical names, the Surveyor General of Poland shall maintain the database of the National Register of Geographical Names. In the Register, among others, officially adopted names in minority languages shall be listed.

JURY – KLEJNOT W SZMARAGDOWYM NASZYJNIKU LWOWA Abstract The most valuable parks in Lviv were designed by the famous city gardener Arnold Röhring, who managed to combine in the art of landscape design the different styles of the turn of 20th century. If the large parks of the city are under state protection, the smaller ones designed as public gardens, boulevards, gardens near the villas are constantly being rebuilt and destroyed. The results of the study of the park in St. Yuri Square in Lviv give grounds for considering this park an authentic monument of landscape art of the end of the 19th century, where its compositional structure and state of rare old-growth species of trees and shrubs are well preserved. Jeśli duże parki miasta są pod ochroną państwa, mniejsze, zaprojektowane jako ogrody pu- bliczne, skwery, bulwary, ogrody w pobliżu willi, stale są przebudowane i niszczone.
