Anastasia [Music From the Motion Picture] Since Anastasia is animator Don Bluth's attempt at a sweeping epic along the lines of Disney's Beauty and the Beast or The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it's not surprising that its score duplicates the Disney formula of balancing big show tunes from the film with re-recorded MOR pop versions of the same song. In this case, it's Aaliyah singing "Journey to the Past," and Deana Carter's cover of "Once Upon a December," and the Donna Lewis and Richard Marx duet on "At the Beginning" -- fine versions of fine songs that sound better in their original incarnation (also included on the disc). Fortunately, the bulk of the album is comprised of selections from the soundtrack. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have written the songs for Anastasia, and their work is generally quite good; occasionally the lyrics are silly ("Rumor in St. Petersburg"), but perhaps that should be expected, given the difficulty of making the story of Anastasia into an animated musical. On the whole, Anastasia might not live up to the high standards that The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast set, but it's as good as Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and that's not bad company at all. • Big Sid” Catlett: the Development of Modern Jazz Drumming Style”
ARTIMISI, ANTHONY B., D.M.A. The Study of Jeff Porcaro's Musical Style and the Development of an Analytical Model for the Study of Drum Set Style in Popular Music. (2011) Directed by Dr. David Nelson and Dr. Kristopher Keeton. 206 pp. Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro was one of the preeminent drummers from the middle of the 1970‘s through his untimely passing on August 5, 1992. He was a founding member of the Grammy Award winning band, Toto, and the list of albums on which his drumming appears includes six hundred ninety-three entries. His willingness to help others and commitment to excellence made a lasting impact on the drumming community and the music industry as a whole. The goal of this research was to complete an analysis of Porcaro‘s drumming style. In order to accomplish this goal, a model was developed that allowed for the analysis of drum set performance based on Robert Breithaupt‘s article entitled ―Musical Considerations for Drumset Improvisation.‖ This article identified nine strategies teachers can use with young students regarding drum set improvisation. Seven of these strategies were used to form a comparative analytical model of musical elements which created a summary of drumming style implemented on Jeff Porcaro for the purposes of this paper: Dynamics, Rate of Strokes, Accents, Rests and Rhythmic Figures, Unisons, Hand-to-Foot Distribution and Special Effects. Porcaro‘s peers and colleagues identified six songs as being representative of his drumming: Boz Scaggs‘s ―Lowdown,‖ ―Lido Shuffle,‖ ―Gimme the Goods‖ and ―Jojo,‖ Steely Dan‘s ―Gaucho,‖ and Toto‘s ―Rosanna.‖ The analytical model applied to the choruses of these songs shows that Porcaro manipulated the different musical elements in a variety of way in order to build to a musical peak during the final chorus of each song.

This one's a little different since all of its questions focus on one topic -love songs. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at --_____ r---"--- and let me know. Thanks. Love Songs Packet Toss-Ups 1. Don't your feet get cold in the wintertime? Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home. It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you. Oh, you're a hard one, I know that you got your reasons. But please get ten points on this tossup before it's too late. ANSWER: - DESPERADO- 2. The artist in one interview said, "The singer realizes he's made promises of love before and broken those promises, but commits himself this time to make a promise that will last." Maybe that's why she falls into his arms with her hair a mess. Maybe that's why he knows that her body will rise when he kisses her passionately. For ten points, name this song by Sting. ANSWER: ]IELDS OF GOLD_ 3. The movie for which it became the theme song was originally going to use "A Girl Like You", by the Smithereens. Fortunately, that was scrapped, and this song that mentions fruitless searches and a thousand churches made it instead. Hey - if it hadn't, boom boxes wouldn't be standard equipment for wooing.
