It got there by winning games it had made a habit of losing: a tense winner-take-all wild-card game against the Milwaukee Brewers, a fifth and deciding game in Dodger Stadium, the breezy four straight against St. This guy literally became a Nats fan in the seconds after they locked up a trip to the franchise's first World Series. But the Nationals, established in when the Montreal Expos moved to D. The Nats always seemed to be on the brink of greatness, yet somehow destined to remain the unlucky Senators. He loved them deeply, even though he never thought the team would reciprocate his passion with pennants and trophies. In all, the Nats had reached the postseason four times prior to this year and failed even to advance a single round, much less win the championship that their talented roster suggested was due. Heading to enjoy the great outdoors? Where Scherzer, a two-time Cy Young winner with Washington, ran into bad luck and shoddy bullpen support in past postseasons, he now looks like his steamrolling self, firing 21 strikeouts over three appearances against the Dodgers and the Cardinals. Trent Rosecrans GOODYEAR, ARIZ. — Tony Cingrani gets angry every time he gives up a hit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a spring training exhibition game – like the one he will start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies – or against the St. Louis Cardinals. As the Reds’ second-year starter sees it, it’s his job to not give up any hits and if he gives up a hit, he didn’t do his job. That makes him angry – and like a famous fictional character, you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. “That’s how I get myself fired up. I need to throw harder, so I try to get super angry and throw it harder,” Cingrani said. “I’m not turning green – I’m trying to scare somebody and see what happens.” Cingrani’s intensity even turned into a meme among Reds fans, with the “Cingrani Face” becoming synonymous with an intense, scary mug. Cingrani said he saw that, and even chuckles quietly about it.

  • Regimes in Baseball Players' Career Data
Data Min Knowl Disc (2017) 31:1580–1621 DOI 10.1007/s10618-017-0510-5 Regimes in baseball players’ career data Marcus Bendtsen1 Received: 28 February 2016 / Accepted: 12 May 2017 / Published online: 27 May 2017 © The Author(s) 2017. This article is an open access publication Abstract In this paper we investigate how we can use gated Bayesian networks, a type of probabilistic graphical model, to represent regimes in baseball players’ career data. We find that baseball players do indeed go through different regimes throughout their career, where each regime can be associated with a certain level of performance. We show that some of the transitions between regimes happen in conjunction with major events in the players’ career, such as being traded or injured, but that some transitions cannot be explained by such events. The resulting model is a tool for managers and coaches that can be used to identify where transitions have occurred, as well as an online monitoring tool to detect which regime the player currently is in. 1 Introduction Baseball has been the de facto national sport of the United States since the late nine- teenth century, and its popularity has spread to Central and South America as well as the Caribbean and East Asia. It has inspired numerous movies and other works of arts, and has also influenced the English language with expressions such as “hitting it out of the park” and “covering one’s bases”, as well as being the origin of the concept of a rain-check. As we all are aware, the omnipresent baseball cap is worn across the world.
