Mrs.• Kathy Small (509) 758-1718 • TDD (509) 527-4412 E Mr.S Roland Schirman7 T 6 AB 9 LISHED 1 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Walla Walla Community College takes great pride in its athletic program, and Baseball is a strong example of the value of intercollegiate athletics. We want to attract student-athletes to our campus who want to achieve success in the classroom. Our baseball team has done that since the program was formed in 1988. Classroom success is a priority. We measure this success by the extremely high percentage of our young men who have earned their degrees and continued on to four-year colleges and universities. Intercollegiate athletics in the context of training for success and education for life adds further dimension to the college curriculum. As in all we do at Walla Walla Community College, we will continue to strive to provide the environment which promotes high-quality performance and personal success throughout the student’s life.

7 2011 Season Preview

The 2011 Warriors are a group of guys that have worked extremely hard from day one in the fall. I believe that this group is hungry to win. We have 12 sophomores, six of whom played in the NWAACC Sophomore Show-case in the fall, and 20 freshmen on the squad this season. This is a versa-tile and deep bunch and we will mix up the line-up quite a bit in our pre-season games to determine which guys are going to help us make a at an East Region Title. Pitching: We have 19 on the roster this year. Eight of them are pitchers-only while the other 11 are two-way guys, meaning they both pitch and play a position. 2010 2nd Team East Region selection Brett Watson will be expected to lead the pitching staff this year. Brett has the potential to dominate every game if he can stay consistent and locate all his pitches. Nick Jordan, who played in the Sophomore Showcase along with Brett this fall, is also expected to be at the top of the rotation this spring. Nick had a dominate fall and will give us a good 1-2 punch with Brett. Anthony Garza, Christian Jacobsen, and Josh Yundt are our other three pitcher-only so-phomores. All three of them have gained confidence from last year and I expect them to make major contributions. Our three other pitcher-only players are freshmen, Connor Lawhead, Jason Renner, and Gary Koopman. Each of them has shown flashes of dominance at times. I will discuss the two-way pitchers in the following sections based on their position. Catching: We have just two on the roster but they are both tal-ented. Sophomore Kyle Sani, who also played in the Sophomore Show-case, continues to get better and better. He has become much more con-sistent from a defensive stand point this year. His biggest strength is still his ability to drive the ball. Kyle will be somewhere right in the heart of the batting order when he is in the line-up. Michael Leach is our other . Leach was All-State last year as a senior in high school. He has all the cha-racteristics that you look for in a catcher, includ- ing leadership, dependabil-ity, and brains. Michael and Kyle both call good games and will work with our pitching staff to keep the opponents hitters off-balance. First base: Leading the way at first base is Marc Garza, another Sopho-more Showcase participant. Marc has a good glove and the ability to scoop any ball in the dirt thrown his way. He was also our best hitter throughout the fall and will be situated somewhere in the middle of the line-up. We look for huge things out of him this year. 1B/LHP Zach Borgman and 1B/LHP Joe Arlt are two of our other first basemen. Both of these guys are battling for the back-up position here and it will come down to who becomes more consistent offensively. They are also going to be counted on heavily to help the pitching staff. To start the year, we look for Joe to be a candidate for our rotation while Zach will be one of the first lefties we call on out of the bullpen. OF’s Matt Wujek and Mike Paulson can also play first base if we need them too. Second base/Shortstop: The middle of the infield will be patrolled by fresh-men, one way or another this year. All six guys that can play in the middle are first year players. SS/RHP Kasey Knigge is the leading candidate at SS at this point. Kasey is a left-handed hitter that has shown glimpses of excellence both in the field and . He is also a guy that has a chance to be in our starting pitching rotation. Neal Schuck, will move back and forth between 2B and SS. He is a good athlete and is a good candidate to hit in the top of the line-up with his ability to handle the bat and work counts. Dane Berg is possibly our best defensive SS. He has a good arm and excellent feet. Once he becomes more consistent with his bat, he has a chance to be very good. Kevin Birch, is another left-handed hitting mid-dle infielder. He had a very good fall and would also be an excellent guy to hit somewhere in the top of the line-up. He has good feet turning the DP. 2B/RHP Jeff Gillespie will be another of our two-way players. He is one of the hardest working players on the team and has shown significant im-provements through the fall and winter. He could also garner some innings out of the bullpen. Jared Jordan is another of our freshmen who could see time at SS or 2B. While he is more of a 3B he has shown the athleticism to play in the middle as well if needed. Third base: Right now, 3B is one of the fiercest competitions on the team. Sophomore LC State transfer Chance Kopacz will be hard to keep out of the line-up based on how well he has swung the bat. He probably has the most power and best bat speed on the squad. If he isn’t at 3B then he will probably DH. Freshman Jared Jordan also had a great fall with the stick and has the glove to match. Jared will also help us in the middle infield at times this year. 3B/RHP Justin Windsor has made perhaps the most im-provements of any returning sophomore this year. He will be a factor not only at third but also on the mound, where he will either be a starter or one of the first guys out of the pen. Another 3B/ RHP is Dalton Moore. He is behind these guys right now offensively but has played well in the field. He throws side-arm on the mound and will give us a good change of pace there as well. Outfield: Our OF has the most experience of any group on the team this year, with three returners. 2010 1st Team East Region and Gold Glove per-former Alex Bonczyk will again lock down CF. Alex has a chance to be one of the best CF to ever play at WWCC. His speed is a huge weapon for us on the base paths and also tracking down fly balls in the OF. He also throw a few innings. 2010 2nd Team East Region OF/RHP Tyler Rob- erts will be counted on to hit in the middle of the line-up and drive in a bunch of runs as well as eat up a bunch of innings either in the rotation or as our closer. We expect him to be one of the top players in the East Re-gion this season. Alex and Tyler both played in the Sophomore Showcase this past fall. Another returner is Brandon Renteria. Brandon saw signifi-cant time last year in the OF and as the DH. He handles the bat extremely well and plays the game the way it should be played, as hard as possible. Also in the OF, are a group of seven freshmen. Leading that group right now are OF/LHP Mike Paulson and OF/RHP Matt Wujek. Both of these guys give us solid left-handed sticks with the ability to drive the ball. They will both have a chance to throw significant innings too. Caleb Grueber and Tyler Harshfield are two more left-handed hitters. Caleb has a chance to be an excellent player at this level. Tyler is relatively new to the OF but he had a good fall and will have a chance to DH. OF/RHP Ryan James is another two-way player. He has an opportunity to be in our starting pitching rotation this spring and will also give us another left-handed hitting option. Our two right-handed hitting freshmen are Kole Stein and KC Hooper. Kole gives us a solid effort day in and day out and will push the guys in front of him. KC is still recovering from a serious leg injury he had last spring. Once he is completely healthy, he will gives us a big offensive boost.
