PAGE 4 Dozens of Animals Find Forever Homes at Mike’s Feed Farm Event & Hundreds Come Out to Support Animal Rescue RIVERDALE, N.J. — With dozens of animals finding homes and thousands in monetary donations, services and pet products donated to rescue, the recent Multi-Agency Pet Adoption Day at Mike’s Feed Farm was a great success for local animals in need. Hundreds came out despite the drizzle to support local animal rescue and adoption. The spirit of the day was animal rescue and adoption. The Shaw family came out looking to adopt a playmate for their dog, Pieper. Pieper has been paralyzed for 3 years following an injury, and uses a wheelchair for mobility. Pieper found her four legged sister that day, in Wolfie, a deaf husky mix with a beautiful spirit, rescued by A Pathway to Hope. The two Troop 658 from Riverdale, on a Mother-Daughter immediately took to one another and overnight trip to Hershey Park. It was a booo-tiful time! began to play, and Wolfie joined the Shaw family shortly after. Attendees came out, many with their dogs in tow, to support rescue, search for a new four legged family member, and meet celebrity guest, Justin Silver, star of the CBS hit Dogs in the City. Animal care experts were on hand to educate pet owners, specifically new adopters, in an effort to keep all adopted animals in permanent, happy and healthy forever homes.

Oral History is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is bound with photographs and illustrative materials and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. ********************************* All uses of this manuscript are covered by a legal agreement between The Regents of the University of California and Ben Bagdikian dated June 4, 2010. I’m sitting with Jackie McLean at the Artists Collective in Hartford, Connecticut, on Friday, July the 20th, 2001. We’re conducting an oral history interview for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Project. The first thing I’d like to do is thank Mr. McLean for agreeing to participate in this oral history. McLean: Oh, it’s my pleasure. It’s very important. Brower: I want to start with what we were talking about before we actually started the formal interview and ask you to tell us about your recent trip to Europe, where you played, with whom you were playing, and then talk about how you’re handling your performance – the performance dimension of your life – right now. McLean: This most recent trip that I made – I made two trips to play with Mal Waldron. The first one was in Verona, Italy, a couple of weeks ago. That was a duo where Mal and I played for about 70 minutes solo, between he and I, duo. Then I went just last week over to the North Sea Festival in the Hague to play with Mal again, this time with his trio, with Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Mal, and I was special guest.

Milt Jackson From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Milton "Bags" Jackson (January 1, 1923 – October 9, 1999) was an American jazz vibraphonist, usually Milt Jackson thought of as a bebop player, although he performed in several jazz idioms. He is especially remembered for his cool swinging solos as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and his penchant for collaborating with several hard bop and postbop players. A very expressive player, Jackson differentiated himself from other vibraphonists in his attention to variations on harmonics and rhythm. He was particularly fond of the Milt Jackson, Village Jazz Lounge with the Bubba twelvebar blues at slow tempos. • Riverside Label Discography
Discography of the Riverside Label The Riverside label was established in 1953 by traditional jazz enthusiasts Bill Grauer and Orrin Keepnews in New York City. Originally Grauer and Keepnews intended to reissue classic jazz that they purchased from long defunct labels. Later the label recorded jazz, folk, comedy, spoken word, sound effects, children’s and gospel. Shortly after starting the Riverside label, Grauer went to Richmond Indiana, to see Harry Gennett Jr. to try to purchase the recordings of the Gennett label. The Gennett Record label was formed in 1918 as a division of the Starr Piano Company in Richmond Indiana. In the early 20’s, the label started recording the early jazz bands that were performing in Chicago. Gennett made the first recordings of Ferd “Jellyroll” Morton, King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band with Louis Armstrong and the Wolverines with Bix Beiderecke. The first recording of “Stardust” was made by its author Hoagy Carmichael in the Gennett Richmond studio The Gennett label had ceased operation in 1932, but many of the historic metal recording plates were still stored in Richmond. Grauer was able to purchase all of the remaining plates for $2000. Grauer began a massive reissue campaign, releasing much of the Gennett material on long playing albums for the first time. Later, Grauer obtained masters from other early jazz and blues labels, including Paramount, Circle, and QRS, and reissued that material. Although the early catalog of Riverside releases contained mostly purchased material, Riverside started recording jazz sessions on its own, including Thelonious Monk, Randy Weston, Wes Montgomery and Cannonball Adderley.

WHITE-KNUCKLE ZEN A Thesis Presented to the Graduate Faculty of California State University, Hayward In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in English By Jeffrey J. Syrop November, 1993 WHITE-KNUCKLE ZEN By Jeffrey J. Syrop Date: ii CONTENTS Mellow Maui 1 Three Fathers 84 One Mother 110 iii MELLOW MAUl Most of the waitresses at Maui's Hyatt Regency Pavilion restaurant couldn't see me, the new waiter; I was invisible to them. Mavis, the lovely hostess, could see me, but Kevin told me not to get too close to her, because she was local. Kevin was a handsome local waiter who talked like a haole, from doing a long stint in the military. He took it upon himself to be my advisor. But he couldn't help me with women, because he couldn't get any women, either. My problem at work was that I was too philosophical. I was always thinking about nuclear weapons and toxic waste, while my coworkers thought about sports cars, cocaine, surfing Maui's wonderful waves, and sex. When I'd pick up an order from the cooks, I might ask them: "Do you think there will always be war?" While passing a busy waitress, I might drop the question: "Is it right to let people in poor countries starve to death to stabilize the world's population?" I would ask my manager: "Is enlightenment possible for everyone?" 1 2 Sometimes, in a lighter vein, I'd ask all the waiters, waitresses, cooks, and the hostess to decide which character on Gilligan's Island they were.
