Miss Paige starred in the original Broadway production of Mame, taking over the title role from its originator, Angela Lansbury. With an all-encompassing talent that embraces the worlds of stage, movies and television, Miss Paige is equally at home in dramatic, comic and musical roles. Prior to her stage career, she enjoyed wide acclaim Book by for her starring roles in motion pictures, Jerome Lawrence beginning with Hollywood Canteen and and continuing through a four-year tenure as a Robert E. Her introduction to Broadway came purely by accident, when producer Leland Hayward, desperately searching through some 200 applicants for Music and Lyrics by the role of Judy Revere in the Howard Lindsay-Russell Crouse comedy Remains To Jerry Herman Be Seen, was introduced to Miss Paige at the rehearsal hall and within the space of fifteen minutes she came away with the part. Miserly Silas McTavish owns and operates a general store—with the help of his long-suffering clerk, Abner Veazey, and Abner’s son, Caleb—where hard bargains are struck and credit is never allowed. As Silas prepares for bed, a mysterious stranger “Guest” appears at the foot of Silas’ bed and commands him to follow on a journey through Christmas past, present and future. Their first stop is Silas’ boyhood home in Scotland, where as a young man he announces to his family that he is going to America, leaving his sweetheart, Fiona, behind. The second stop is Abner Veazey’s home, where his large impoverished family steadfastly maintains Christmas cheer despite Caleb’s worsening condition. Mrs. Walker arrives with her sick infant. The final stop of Silas and the Guest—Christmas future—is a graveyard where a funeral service is underway for Caleb and the Walker infant, whose lives could have been saved by a doctor. The Guest departs after reminding Silas that he has the power to alter Christmas future. Silas awakens on Christmas morning deeply moved by his nightlong journey. -

Lee By Nena Couch As one of the great partnerships in theatre, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee have written some of the longest running and most widely produced plays of this century, many of which have been called contemporary theatre classics. But their proudest accolade is when they are described as "The Thinking-Person's Playwrights." Ironically, since they most often work as a team, Lawrence and Lee have been dedicated, enthusiastic proponents of the individual. This commitment to the "dignity of the individual human mind," [Jerome Lawrence, "The Renaissance Man" (Lecture delivered at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, 5 May 1969), 2] apparent in their first Broadway success, Look, Ma, I'm Dancin'! in 1948, has continued to their newest play, Whisper in the Mind which premiered on October 5, 1990. Be that individual a delightful and free-thinking Mame (Auntie Mame and Mame) who urges us to discover new things about ourselves and the world, a Drummond (Inherit the Wind) whose balancing of the Bible and Darwin shows us that the open and inquiring mind is our champion against censorship, a Countess Aurelia (Dear World) who proves to us that "one person can change the world," a Supreme Court Justice Dan Snow (First Monday in October) who fights for the light for everyone, or a Thoreau (The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail) who is not afraid to march to a different drummer, Lawrence and Lee have populated stages all over the world with sometimes serious, sometimes witty, but always passionately committed, individuals. -

Inherit the wind book pdf Continue Jerome Lawrence was born on July 14, 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio, into a literary family. As a teenager, Jerome Lawrence studied writing with Eugene K. Davis. After graduating from Glenville High School in Cleveland in 1933, Lawrence continued to study with Harlan Hatcher, Herman Miller and Robert Newdick at Ohio State University. He graduated from Phi Beta Kappa in Ohio in 1937. From 1937 to 1939, Lawrence was a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles. Together, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee wrote famous works of American drama, including Inherit the Wind, Night of Thoreau spent in prison and Aunt Mama. For their work as playwrights, they have won two Peabody Awards, the Variety Critics Poll Award, several Tony Award nominations, and many other awards. Both Lawrence and Lee were fundamentally shaped by their participation in World War II. Staff Sgt. Lawrence served as a consultant to the secretary of war and then as an army correspondent for North Africa and Italy. In addition to his service at themilitary, he worked as a journalist, reporter and telegraph editor for small Daily Newspapers Ohio and as a succession editor at KMPC in Beverly Hills. Before World War II, he worked from 1939 to 1941, as a senior staff writer for CBS Radio, an experience that became useful when he and Lee founded Armed Forces Radio. Lawrence's interest in drama was evident in his school and student years, when he starred and directed school and summer theater productions. Working together on Armed Forces Radio, Lawrence and Lee produced official army and naval radio programs for D-Day, VE-Day and VJ-Day.
