The nuclear bombs and the fallout have destroyed the northern hemisphere of the world. The radioactive dust is slowly moving south, killing everything in its path. Peter Holmes, Lieutenant Commander in the Australian navy, is appointed liaison officer on board Scorpion, a nuclear submarine. He is to work under American Commander, Dwight Towers. Ringer Edwards enlisted at Cairns, Queensland on January 21 1941 and was posted to the 2/26th Infantry Battalion. The battalion became part of the 27th Brigade, which was assigned to the 8th Division. Experiences as a POW. Along with many other Allied prisoners, Edwards was sent to work as forced labour on the railway being built by the Japanese army from Thailand to Burma. In 1943, he and two other prisoners killed cattle to provide food for themselves and comrades. Herbert James "Ringer" Edwards was an Australian soldier during World War II. As a prisoner of war , he survived being crucified for 63 hours by Japanese soldiers on the Burma Railway. Edwards was the basis for the character "Joe Harman" in Nevil Shute's novel A Town Like Alice . The book was the basis for a film and a television miniseries . The story behind Edwards's crucifixion began when he and two of his fellow POWs were caught killing cattle for their meat in order to feed themselves and their comrades. The three of them were sentenced to death by crucifixion. -

Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

FALLOUT in JAPAN
東京大学アメリカ太平洋研究 第 16 号 7 FALLOUT in JAPAN Peter Kaufmann As producer and co-writer of the feature documentary film, FALLOUT, I was invited by the Center for Pacific and American Studies to present the film at the University of Tokyo last October. Following the screening I was joined on a forum by professors Ms Yuko Kawaguchi from Hosei University and Mr Hidehiro Nakao from Chuo University. Subsequently I was asked to prepare this paper to explain the background, motivation and process for producing FALLOUT. FALLOUT explores the mythology and reality of author Nevil Shute’s post-apocalyptic novel On The Beach, and its Hollywood movie adaptation produced and directed by Stanley Kramer. On The Beach presents a scenario in which most of the world’s population has been annihilated by a nuclear war. A deadly cobalt radioactive cloud has enveloped the earth and is slowly descending on Australia where the last remaining huddle of humanity considers how they will live the final months and days of their lives, and prepare to die. Shute’s novel is eerily prophetic and in it he has projected a nuclear war that is set in 1961, four years into the future from the time of On The Beach’s publication and release in 1957. There are two key factors that were to have a significant influence on me in developing the original concept for FALLOUT, and for realising the film’s central narrative and its eventual production. The setting in the novel for On The Beach is Melbourne, Australia, and it is here that Stanley Kramer filmed his American adaptation on location. -

You will also remember that RW Munro was the Clan Munro historian. That project is now complete and will be included on the CD that Allen Alger produces each year. This is a very exciting addition to Allen’s CD and as I worked on the transcription project, I know that it contains a huge amount of Munro information - I will be very surprised if I do not find some sort of match. Charles assures me that there are a number of Australian & New Zealand references included & has urged us to develop a combined Australia/New Zealand database, so we must get that under This Month way. If you would like your tree to be included in Alan Munro’s data base just let me know and I will tell how to do that. Remembering on the Beach
A COMMENTARY BY PHILIP BEIDLER Remembering On the Beach efore World War II, Hollywood scared people to death with mad scientists and monsters. During World War II they specialized in strutting Nazis and villainous Japs. After the war, political subversives mixed with Bspace creatures, and vice versa; as importantly, in what had come to be called the nuclear age, a whole new category of fear film centered on atomic mutants: Them; Godzilla; Attack of the Crab Monsters; It Came From Beneath the Sea. More directly, Invasion USA. (1952) combined fear of nuclear attack with communist takeover, helping to usher in the new Cold War genre of Soviet/US atomic mass destruction movies culminating in such boomer classics as Fail Safe and Dr. Strangelove, both issued in 1964. Less frequently remembered, perhaps because slightly older—albeit now decidedly more interesting for its emphasis on the human depiction of nuclear aftermath than on the Pentagon-Kremlin mechanics of initiating wars of mutual annihilation—is the one that first got the attention of popular audiences on the subject. That would beOn the Beach (1959), Stanley Kramer’s elegiac representation of the dying remnant of a world in the wake of global atomic warfare. In the golden age of Technicolor and Cinemascope—and to this degree anticipating its better known successors—it was a black-and-white film of stark, muted, austere genius, featuring career performances from a number of important actors: Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, a pre-Psycho Anthony Perkins, and Fred Astaire, in his first purely dramatic role. In all these respects, it became a movie that challenged people who saw it never to look at the world in the same way again. -

Sarah Chambers (9105913) 1 Professor David Pascoe & Dr Roselinde Supheert MA Thesis Literatuur en Cultuurkritiek 13473 Words 30th July 2014 Fledgling Post-War Communities in Nevil Shute’s A Town Like Alice and Round the Bend In two separate articles written in January 2014, American climate activist Dan Bloom called for “a powerful Nevil Shute-like novel and movie about global warming” that could “help awaken the world to the dangers of climate change” (“New”). Nevil Shute’s 1957 novel On the Beach “stirred the world’s consciousness about what a so-called ‘nuclear winter’ might look like” (“New”) and Bloom suggests that a climate-change novel with “the power of On the Beach … could serve as a wake up call for humankind” (“New”). As he proceeds to explain, “Shute’s On the Beach made the consequences of nuclear war real, and therefore, unthinkable” (“New”). Bloom imagines a “Nevil Shute Literary Award for Climate-Themed Novels” that would offer a million-dollar reward for a powerful climate-change novel (“A Nevil”). Dan Bloom’s faith in On the Beach’s well-documented ability to shape its readers’ imagination of nuclear fallout is understandable. As Daniel Pearson suggests, the story’s power to mobilize public opinion was such that Stanley Kramer’s 1959 film version became “part of the struggle over the meaning of ‘the bomb’ and the narrative of the Cold War in the United States Government … new ways of dealing with unflattering films would have to be developed both by the department of defence and the Eisenhower administration.” What is striking in Bloom’s on-line articles is his casual twenty-first century reference to Nevil Shute, as if this hugely successful twentieth-century novelist were still a household name.
