The review also includes suggestions for further areas that should be designated within the scope of these two Directives. Although the two Directives have different objectives, the areas designated as sensitive or vulnerable are reviewed simultaneously because of the similarities in the designation process. The investigations will focus upon: • Checking that those waters that should be identified according to either Directive have been; • in the case of the Nitrates Directive, assessing whether vulnerable zones have been designated correctly and comprehensively. The identification of vulnerable zones and sensitive areas in relation to the Nitrates Directive and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive is carried out according to both common and specific criteria, as these are specified in the two Directives. 1.1 THE URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIRECTIVE (91/271/EEC) The Directive concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater as well as biodegradable wastewater from certain industrial sectors. The designation of sensitive areas is required by the Directive since, depending on the sensitivity of the receptor, treatment of a different level is necessary prior to discharge.

    Azzali City Territ Archit (2017) 4:11 DOI 10.1186/s40410-017-0066-0 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park: an assessment of the 2012 London Games Legacies Simona Azzali* Abstract The London 2012 Olympics were the frst Games with a legacy plan already in execution well before the beginning of the event. This study aims at evaluating the legacies of this Olympic edition, with particular regard to the new public open spaces created and their sustainability. The research carries out a post-occupancy evaluation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which is the main output of the 2012 Summer Olympics. Results show good achievements in terms of physical and social integration while the economic impact appears to be the weakest legacy from hosting the Games.     Analysis A “clean city”: the Olympic Games and civil liberties Chris Jones Introduction In 2005, the UK won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Seven years later, the Games are due to begin, but they are not without controversy. Sponsors of the Games – including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Cadbury’s, BP and, perhaps most controversially, Dow Chemical [1] – were promised “what is chillingly called a ‘clean city’, handing them ownership of everything within camera distance of the games.” [2] In combination with measures put in place to deal with what have been described as the “four key risks” of terrorism, protest, organised crime and natural disasters, [3] these measures have led to a number of detrimental impacts upon civil liberties, dealt with here under the headings of freedom of expression; freedom of movement; freedom of assembly; and the right to protest. The Games will be hosted in locations across the country, but primarily in London, which is main the focus of this analysis. Laying the groundwork Following victory for the bid to host the Games, legislation – the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 – was passed “to make provision in connection with the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games that are take place in London in the year 2012.” [4] It is from here that limitations on freedom of expression have come, as well as some of the limitations on freedom of movement that stem from the introduction of “Games Lanes” to London’s road system. Policing and security remains the responsibility of the national and local authorities.

    ACTION PLAN FOR CIVIL PROTECTION FOR THE REGION OF IONIAN ISLANDS Konstantinos Karidis Director of Civil Protection Department,Region of Ionian Islands,Corfu, Greece,[email protected] Abstract The Region of the Ionian Islands, on an initiative by the Regional Governor, collaborated in 2015 with the national Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), in order to organise an annually driven Pan-Ionian Earthquake Drill. The drill takes place on a different island of the region each year. The first drill, code named "Telemachos 2015", took place in Zakynthos, the second in Lefkada, named "Lefkadios 2016", while last year’s drill with the Homeric name “Alkinoos”, was held in Corfu and was remarkably successful. P.I.N.’s initiatives have now been integrated into 2 innovative programs, co-funded by the EU (NSRF 2014-2020), named "TELEMACHOS" and "LAERTIS", which are run by the Civil Protection Department. The “Telemachos” program focused on the creation of an innovative system for seismic risk management in the Ionian Islands and includes: The elaboration of thematic maps (geological, geotechnical, seismic etc) and soil and vulnerability measurements of buildings, networks and infrastructures, as well as the development of a system to support the exchange of data between stakeholders and their processing in real time. The "Laertis" program includes the risk assessment of fires, floods, erosion as well as the risk of landslides and the analysis of vulnerability for all the above risks using satellite images. In the meantime, an Emergency Management System based on Wireless Sensor Network technologies is foreseen to provide emergency information to operators, as well as the production of special information material and the provision of the necessary equipment for the prevention and suppression of risks in natural disasters.

The earliest record of the Olympic Games goes back to776 BC. The Original Olympics The only event was a foot race of about 183 meters. They also included competitions in music, oratory and theatre performances. The 18-th Olympics Included wrestling and pentathlon, later Games – chariot races and other sports. In 394 A.D. the games were ended by the Roman emperor Theodosius. Pierre de Coubertin Brought the Olympic Games back to life in 1896. SPORTS IN SUMMER OLYMPICS • The current categories are: ▫ Category A: athletics, aquatics, gymnastics.3 ▫ Category B: basketball, cycling, football, tennis, and volleyball.5 ▫ Category C: archery, badminton, boxing, judo, rowing, shooting, table tennis, and weightlifting.8 ▫ Category D: canoe/kayaking, equestrian, fencing, handball, field hockey, sailing, taekwondo, triathlon, and wrestling.9 ▫ Category E: modern pentathlon, golf, and rugby.3 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES • held every four years. • The athletes compete in 20 different disciplines (including 5 Paralympics' disciplines). Founder & Beginning • The foundation for the Winter Olympics are Nordic games. • Gustav Viktor Balck - organizer of the Nordic games and a member of the IOC. • The first Summer Olympics with winter sport were in London, in 1908. The first ‘winter sports week’ was planned in 1916, in Berlin, but the Olympics were cancelled because of the outbreak of the World War I. The first true Winter Olympics were in 1924, in Chamonix, France. • In 1986, the IOC decided to separate the Summer and Winter Games on separate years.

Sports Ancient and Modern This display celebrates the Olympics and includes artefacts borrowed from UCL’s Institute of Archaeology which itself is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. The pottery and figures are all from the Ancient World and were created in a time when unity and physical prowess were held in high regard. Also on display is paraphernalia from the Olympic Congress held in Paris in 1914, at which the symbol of five interlocking rings was adopted for the Olympic flag. Team photographs and trophies reflecting the athletic achievements of UCL’s students feature too from the 19th Century to the present day, but particularly from the time of the British Olympic Games held in 1908 and 1948. Charles Dickens at 200 Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and this year marks his 200th birthday. He drew much inspiration from London in his writing and lived in and around Bloomsbury for many years.

CASE STUDIES OF CRACOW AND ALMATY The collapse of the Soviet Union has led to historical transitions in Central and Eastern Europe. The political and economic transformation in countries located in this world’s region has caused their dynamic socioeconomic development and more stable position on the international stage. Regarding the potential of hosting the Olympic Games as an opportunity for infrastructural im- provements, employment boost, and presentation of a positive image and traditions of a country, post-Soviet cities have entered the race for staging Olympic events. The main aim of this article is to analyse the bidding process for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games with an emphasis on case studies from two bidding cities with post-socialist history – Cracow and Almaty. Characteristic patterns and features of both cities’ bids, as well as differences between them are drawn, with conclusions on why these were unsuccessful. Cracow and Almaty’s bid paths in the 2022 Winter Olympics process were different. Cracow pulled out from the race during the applicant phase because of referendum results: the city residents were against the Olympics, while Almaty reached the final phase and lost to Beijing in final voting. It seems that post-socialist countries still have a weaker bargaining position in the bidding process than candidates with advanced and estab- lished economies. It recalls sliding sports and France with its colours as well as the olympic spirit with the flame inspired by the Savoie cross and the olympic rings. So as to integrate the olympic emblem (text, rings), a deep graphic study was made. The official logo of the 1992 Winter Olympics Games consists of three inseparable elements : - a symbol, "the flame", - a typography "Albertville 92", - the olympic rings which according to the IOC olympic charter, "represent the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes of the whole world on the occasion of the Olympic Games in a spirit of loyal competition and friendship, ideal praised by the Baron de Coubertin".
