ROSTER ROUND-UP: Accounting for the transactions thus far this spring, the Padres currently have 36 active players in big league camp...with 30 of the 40-man roster, 6 non-roster invitees and one on the D.L., the Padres squad features 19 active pitchers (four southpaws), three catchers, six infi elders and eight outfi elders...entering camp, the Padres had 19 players on the current 40-man roster that were not there at the beginning of 2013 Spring Training. HE’S OUR BUDDY: The 2014 season will be the eighth campaign at the helm for Padres manager Buddy Black, tied with Giants manager and former Padres skipper Bruce Bochy for the longest-tenured manager in the National League...Black’s clubs are 540-595 (.476) in his seven seasons since taking over in 2007...the only other managers to be at their current posts longer than Black are Mike Scioscia of the Angels (15), Ron Gardenhire of the Twins (13), Joe Maddon of the Rays (9) and Ron Washington of the Rangers (also 8). MAJOR LEAGUE GAME, MINOR LEAGUE PLAYERS, COLLEGE STADIUM: For the two games at USD’s Fowler Park, the Padres will feature a slew of minor league players including RHP Trevor Gott (#91. 6th round pick in 2013), OF Alberth Martinez (#87), LHP Chris Nunn (#95), INF Jace Peterson (#74, 2010 1st round pick), INF Gabriel Quintana (#94), OF Hunter Renfroe (#93, 1st round pick in 2013) and RHP Joe Ross (#66, 1st round pick in 2011). THE FUTURE: Eight of the Padres’ top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America, were in camp when this Spring began...that list includes C Austin Hedges (1), RHP Matt Wisler (2), RHP Casey Kelly (5), OF Rymer Liriano (6), INF Jace Peterson (7), RHP Burch Smith (8), RHP Keyvius Sampson (9) and RHP Joe Ross (10) ...Baseball America also recently released their rankings of the top 100 prospects in baseball, including Hedges (27), Wisler (44), LHP Max Fried (53) and OF Hunter Renfroe (80). UPON FURTHER REVIEW...: With Major League Baseball’s expanded instant replay during the 2014 regular season, full replay for the Padres was available for the fourth and fi nal time this spring March 23+ in Surprise against the Rangers as San Diego did not issue a challenge while the Rangers had a successful review with a play at the plate...unsuccessful challenges were issued by both the Padres and the Mariners on the evening of March 21...the Padres and manager Bud Black had their fi rst successful challenge March 14 vs. the Angels, reversing a bunt single to a ground out to the pitcher...the Padres had their fi rst taste of the new rules during the game on March 9 vs. Arizona as both the Diamondbacks and the Padres used their challenge, and in both instances, the call on the fi eld was upheld...the new system was also available for use during the Padres fi rst matchup with the Brewers on March 7, but no challenges were issued. PADRES ON THE RADIO: The Padres next radio broadcast is tonight from USD on The Mighty 1090 when San Diego faces-off with the Cleveland Indians...the Friars will have audio broadcasts available for 26 of the scheduled 31 games during Cactus League play...15 of the 26 games will be broadcast on either Mighty 1090 or ESPN 1700 while the other 11 broadcasts can be found on Padres.com via webcast...the Friars broadcast team all spring is a rotation of Ted Leitner, Bob Scanlan and Jesse Agler.
