Box FM 730, Famona, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe [email protected] Abstract.—The status, relationships and zoogeography of the 14 taxa of Psammophis found south of Latitude 12° S are reviewed and the following taxonomic changes are proposed: 1. Psammophis trinasalis and P. namibensis, previously treated as subspecies of P. leightoni, are recognised as good evolutionary species which show ecological differences. 2. Psammophis orientalis, previously regarded as a subspecies of P. subtaeniatus, differs from the lat- ter in a suite of characters and is parapatric with it in Zimbabwe, so it is now recognised as an evolu- tionary species. 3. Psammophis brevirostris and P. leopardinus, previously regarded as subspecies of P. sibilans (Linnaeus), are recognised as relict evolutionary species. The Zambian populations previously assigned to P. leopardinus have been described as a new species (Hughes & Wade, in press). Its eastern boundary is the watershed between the Sand River and its tributaries and the eastward draining Letaba and Pafuri Rivers. Its northern boundary is formed by Formations of the Soutpansberg Group that built the mountain range of that name. The western boundary consists from north to south firstly of Waterberg Group sedimentary rocks, followed by mafic Bushveld rocks and lastly by strata of the Wolkberg Group including the Black Reef Formation. These strata build the Highlands Mountains and the east- northeasterly trending Strydpoort Mountains that form the southern boundary.

    LIMPOPO WATER MANAGEMENT AREA WATER RESOURCES SITUATION ASSESSMENT MAIN REPORT OVERVIEW The water resources of South Africa are vital to the health and prosperity of its people, the sustenance of its natural heritage and to its economic development. Water is a national resource that belongs to all the people who should therefore have equal access to it, and although the resource is renewable, it is finite and distributed unevenly both spatially and temporally. The water also occurs in many forms that are all part of a unitary and inter-dependent cycle. The National Government has overall responsibility for and authority over the nation’s water resources and their use, including the equitable allocation of water for beneficial and sustainable use, the redistribution of water and international water matters. The protection of the quality of water resources is also necessary to ensure sustainability of the nation’s water resources in the interests of all water users. This requires integrated management of all aspects of water resources and, where appropriate, the delegation of management functions to a regional or catchment level where all persons can have representative participation. This report is based on a desktop or reconnaissance level assessment of the available water resources and quality and also patterns of water requirements that existed during 1995 in the Limpopo Water Management Area, which occupies a portion of the Northern Province. The report does not address the water requirements beyond 1995 but does provide estimates of the utilisable potential of the water resources after so-called full development of these resources, as this can be envisaged at present.

SCHMIDT KURZFASSUNG Das Langjan Naturreservat ist ein 4774 ha großes Schutzgebiet in der Limpopo Provinz Südafrikas, 130 km nördlich der Provinzhauptstadt Pietersburg gelegen. Während einer Feldstudie von Januar bis April 1998 und drei kürzeren Aufenthalten zwischen 1999 und 2001 konnten innerhalb des Schutzgebietes insgesamt 43 Reptilien- (3 Schildkröten, 23 Eidechsen, 17 Schlangen) und 7 Amphibienarten nachgewiesen werden. Die Anzahl der aus dem Gebiet bekannten Formen erhöht sich damit auf 47 bei den Reptilien und 10 bei den Amphibien. Die von der Autorin im Untersuchungsgebiet nachgewiesenen Arten werden hinsichtlich ihrer relativen Häufigkeit, ihrer allge- meinen Lebensraumansprüche und Verbreitung im Reservat charakterisiert. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Human–carnivore conflict represents a global problem, negatively impacting carnivore populations and local livelihoods worldwide. Game farming in South Africa has increased introducing a new form of conflict due to predation on game, but is poorly understood. We contribute to this deficit by adopting an interdisciplinary research approach bringing together quantitative and qualitative data with longitudinal engagement with farmers. We assess the impacts, characteristics and management of human–leopard conflict on game and livestock in the Blouberg Mountain Range. Leopards represented 89 % of reported game attacks with the highest number of attacks on impala and 60 % of reported livestock attacks. The economic costs of leopard predation were highest for nyala com- pared to other game species and the financial cattle and donkey losses represented large economic costs for communal farmers compared to commercial farmers. Both farming communities experienced a reduced sense of wellbeing and for communal farmers, neg- ative spiritual and cultural impacts. The spatial predation risk of game attacks were most affected by increasing distance to water and the risk of predation on livestock attacks increased further away from villages. Livestock attacks were associated with seasonal grazing patterns and the erosion of traditional management livestock strategies due to the economic costs of their implementation and the migrant labour system altering manage- ment roles in the community.

The bioregional plan serves as the primary biodiversity informant to a range of planning and land-use authorisation processes, although it is important to recognise that the bioregional plan does not replace any planning and decision-making processes and does not grant, limit or remove land-use rights.
