Bradley, Bornstein Take MLS Honors Associated Press News Service, The - October 31, 2006 Author/Byline: AP Section: Sports NEW YORK (AP) - Chivas USA coach Bob Bradley and defender Jonathan Bornstein won MLS seasonal awards Tuesday. Bradley was chosen 2006 Coach of the Year, and Bornstein won Rookie of the Year honors. They helped the second-year club to a third- place finish in the Western Conference and a playoff spot one season after finishing last in the West with a 4-22-6 mark. Chivas was 10-9- 13 this season. Bradley, in his first year with Chivas USA, has had his teams qualify for the playoffs in every season of his nine-year MLS coaching career. Bradley, the winningest coach in league history, also won top coach honors in 1998 when he led the Chicago Fire to the MLS Cup title in its debut season. He becomes the first two-time winner of the award and beat out D.C. United coach Peter Nowak and the Chicago Fire's Dave Sarachan. Previous coaches of the year included Bruce Arena in 1997. The 21-year-old Bornstein, a fourth-round pick (37th overall) in the 2006 draft, started every game and logged 2,878 minutes, not only the most of any rookie but by any field player in the league. The versatile Bornstein had four assists and led all rookies with six goals. Bornstein beat out teammate Sacha Kljestan and Real Salt Lakes Mehdi Ballouchy for the award. The winners were selected in voting by media, MLS players, coaches and general managers. MLS will field their best against the epic Real Madrid in a glorified exhibition match. This All-Star game signals a transition to the second half of the season. Clubs will begin to turn up the heat as the hunt for the Cup begins. Here are five things to look out for post the All-Star game: LA Galaxy & Orlando City’s Push: In 2016, the Seattle Sounders lost 12 of their first 20 games. Two days after their 12th loss, they sacked Sigi Schmid and hired Brian Schmetzer as interim. One day after naming their new man in charge, Seattle made a splash and signed creative Uruguayan midfielder Nicklas Lodeiro as a Designated Player. A club that was trending nowhere, changed their fortunes around. Within weeks, they were one of the most feared clubs in the league. The Sounders also went on to lift the MLS Cup. 1 / 3 The Galaxy are pretty much exactly in the same position heading into the All-Star Game as Sounders was in 2016. USMNT Rumors: Bruce Arena takes over as head coach Author : Robert D. Cobb The United States Soccer Federation made a major decision on Monday with the firing of manager and technical director Jurgen Klinsmann. The move follows a disastrous start to the final round of 2018 World Cup qualifying, with losses to Mexico and Costa Rica that have the Stars and Stripes at the bottom of the Hexagonal Round standings. Problems within Klinsmann’s reign went beyond simply the two recent defeats and the change was brewing over the past few years. According to multiple reports including Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, Bruce Arena will be the next USMNT manager. His return as USMNT manager would bring the current LA Galaxy manager to familiar ground. A member of the US Soccer Hall of Fame, Arena brings vast experience and one of the most successful resumes in the domestic game. https://twitter.com/GrantWahl/status/800807812469321732 It will be interesting to see what US Soccer says in its press conference later on Tuesday about these rumors. Will he take over on an interim basis while US Soccer considers full-time candidates, or is he the guy through World Cup 2018? There are several positives to Bruce Arena being back with the Yanks once more no matter the duration. 4-4-2 One of Klinsmann’s most frustrating tendencies was to tinker and experiment with the US lineup too often. Without even taking into account roster choices, the formation and approach were a constant guessing game. Klinsmann’s decision to utilize a 3-5-2 in the recent qualifier against Mexico ultimately undermined the team’s performance.
