OCEANconnection between BEACHland and sea BLUFF (MOTUPŌHUE) AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND Bluff is a port town located on a peninsula at the southern end of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of New Zealand’s earliest and longest continually settled areas by Europeans in Aotearoa. It is one of the original settlements of the Maori Ngai Tahu tribe who were located on the seaward facing side of Bluff. The first recorded boat entered Bluff harbour in 1813, when a trade expedition was sent from Sydney, Australia. Today the port of Bluff is an important commercial deepwater port with annual cargo throughput of over 1.7 million tonnes. The Ocean Beach site in Bluff was first established as a freezing works in 1892 and by 1901 was capable of freezing 3000 sheep each day. This operation closed in 1991 and the site is now the WELLINGTON home to a new and dynamic Aquaculture park. The deep, cool southern waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone contain a wide variety of fish species including Southland’s most common commercial fish species, the blue cod and crayfish (Spiny Rock lobster). The main fishing methods in Southland are: crayfish and cod potting, oyster dredging, trawling, set netting, handlines and diving. Seafood exports account for around 90% of the seafood industry revenue and fisheries consistently ranks as the country’s fifth largest export earner. Currently aquaculture farming in Southland consists of mainly mussel and salmon farming conducted in Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island. Due to environmental constraints around farming within the marine environment, land based Aquaculture is becoming increasingly important. Ocean Beach is the only onshore Aquaculture site in Southland and when fully operational will be one of the largest Aquaculture parks in New Zealand. The site is currently the second largest onshore Paua (Abalone) fishery in New Zealand. OCEAN BEACH NZAC NUMBER OF PAUA BY YEAR PAUA (ABALONE) The New Zealand Abalone Company (NZAC) is in the early stages of re-establishing the Paua (Abalone) farm that was previously operated at Ocean Beach by Southern Marine Farms. The Paua live within the cold clean water extracted from the Foveaux Strait and feed on seaweed harvested from the surrounding region. The farm brood stock are sourced from Stewart Island with only the strongest and healthiest shellfish selected for the breeding process. The company is forecasting the first harvest of 400 tons (approximately 20,000,000 Paua) per annum by 2022. Due to the significant infrastructure in place this annual harvest could be increased should a sufficient level of demand be achieved. The New Zealand Abalone Company (NZAC) intends to supply the domestic and international markets through distribution partners rather than market the product directly. The New Zealand Abalone Company (NZAC) are currently in discussions with a number of parties about establishing long term supplier relationships for significant quantities of New Zealand Abalone. OCEAN BEACH AQUACULTURE PARK Ocean Beach Aquaculture Park is located at the gateway to Bluff, New Zealand with spectacular views across Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island. The Park is spread over 13 hectares of land with an adjacent 40 hectares of Southport rural farm land. Ocean Beach has Coastal Permits in place to extract large Bluff Town quantities of salt water from the fast moving and cold clean waters of Foveaux Strait. Coastal Permits are also in place to extract saltwater from the Bluff Harbour which is suitable for shellfish and seaweed farming. Ocean Beach currently has The New Zealand Abalone Company’s abalone farm operating from the site. The New Zealand Abalone Company is on target to be New Zealand’s largest producer of Abalone by 2022. Ocean Beach are also in discussions with a number of interested parties to establish their Aquaculture Farms on the site.
