House Blessing and Candlemas

House Blessing Throughout the liturgical year, the gives us traditions, feasts and celebrations to encourage us to live our faith with greater understanding of God and His love for us. Some of these traditions or feasts have been lost with generations gone by – while others are misunderstood. Let’s start with a New Year’s tradition, the house blessing. Have you ever seen doorways with chalk-written letters and numbers at the top? Have you wondered what it is and why it’s up there?

The blessing of your doorways is a beautiful practice of inviting God into your home; dedicating the year to Him, while asking for blessings on all who enter - those who live, visit and work there. The inscription is the year, combined with crosses and the letters C, M, and B, which carry a double meaning - the names of the three Kings who visited Jesus in His first home: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar and an abbreviation of the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat, which means “May Christ bless the house”. It looks like this: 20+C+M+B+21.

To bless your home, take a packet with the blessed chalk and follow the directions.

Candlemas Forty days after Jesus’ birth, on February 2nd, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the revelation of Jesus as the “Light of the World”. In accord with Jewish tradition, Joseph and Mary present Jesus in the Temple where they meet Simeon and Anna, who tell us of the great significance of this event. Simeon, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, knew he would not die without seeing the Messiah. Recognizing Jesus, Simeon took Him in his arms and said, “Master, now You are dismissing Your servant in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Your people Israel.” Luke 2:29-32 As Simeon blessed them, he revealed that suffering will precede the victory of the Light. He said to our Blessed Mother, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” Luke 2:34-35

These blessed candles symbolize the revelation of Jesus, the “Light of the World,” to the people. Take them home; and as you light them, pray that you and your family will make Christ present to those you meet in your daily lives.

This new year is filled with hope and promise – opportunities abound to grow our vital ministries, explore new ways to share the good news of Christ’s love, and reflect His care and mercy to those in need throughout the community. To continue to make a difference in 2021, Divine Mercy is reaching out to our parishioners. Begin the new year with eGiving to help sustain and build ministries throughout 2021 that reflect the promise of God’s love. The need is great in our community, and your generous online gifts will help people all around us.

We prayerfully request that you consider signing up for eGiving from your computer, smartphone or tablet. You can set up a recurring donation or make a one-time gift.

Exorcism: The Battle Against Satan and His Demons Fr. Vincent Lampert Emmaus Road Publishing

At a time when many Christians no longer practice their faith, there has been an increase in the attention given to the devil and his devious ways. Because the devil seeks to destroy and separate us from God, all Catholics must be on guard. In this book, Fr. Vincent P. Lampert equips Catholics with the knowledge necessary to avoid become vulnerable to spiritual attack. In Exorcism, you'll learn how the Church selects and trains for the ministry of exorcism; where and how the devil operates in the world, and what Scripture has to say about it; why it is vital for Catholics to live a vibrant life of faith; what to do if you suspect the presence of the demonic in your life or in others and how to fend off spiritual attack and build a stronger relationship with God.

Saint of the Week

By our devotion to the saints, our heavenly brothers and sisters in Christ who have gone before us, and by their prayers of intercession, fraternal charity is exercised, which contributes to the unity of the Church and aids us on our pilgrim journey.

Saint John Bosco

Feast Day: January 31

John Bosco was born on August 16, 1815 in the village of Becchi in northern Italy. His parents were poor farmers and his father died when he was only two. His mother, Margarita, taught him how to work and most importantly to recognize God in life’s fortunes and misfortunes. In 1841 as a young priest he came to work in

Turin. His spiritual guide, Joseph Cafasso, gave him the following advice: “go throughout the city and observe how the people are living everyday life”. The living standard of the workers was miserable and the youth were aimlessly wandering the city streets unemployed, lost and prone to crime and evil. He then made the decision to do all that he could to prevent the youth from getting into these tragic situations. On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1841, Don Bosco met Bartholomew Garelli from Asti, a young boy who came to Turin to find work. Three days later he brought along nine more friends and after three months there were twenty-five. By the summer of 1842 there were 80 boys. In short, that’s how the Quote of the Week: oratory began and eventually his mother, Margarita, moved to Turin to help him. Amongst the boys for whom Don Bosco was father and teacher, there were those who wanted to follow him. Hence, the beginning of the Salesian Society – The Society of St. Francis de Sales. At the end of his life Don Bosco was able to say that over 3000 vocations came from his oratory. The greatest heritage that Don Bosco left the Church was his “preventive system” for the education of youth. When asked for the secret of his success, which transformed big institutions into a family of love, he answered with three words: reason, religion and kindness. When reasoning is used instead of threats, when God is the housemaster and when there is no fear but rather love, the end result is a true family. Don Bosco died on January 31, 1888. While on his deathbed, he whispered to his Salesians: “love each other as brothers. Do good to all and avoid evil..tell my boys that I am waiting for them in paradise. “Life of St. John Bosco.” Saint John Bosco Catholic Church, sjbparmaheights.org/about/life-of-st-john-bosco/.
