ISSUE 45 | JANUARY 2017 | ROYALCALEDONIANCURLINGCLUB.ORG | CLUBS & RINKS CLUBS & RINKS CARDOSS CURLING 8-ENDER Preston Fleming and his team from Cardross Curling Club achieved the ultimate goal when they scored an 8 Ender recently in their King Competition at Greenacres. Preston’s team couldn’t even score 1 shot until the 5th end and followed this with a 2 at the 6th to trail Ewen Baird’s team 5 - 3. The 7th end changed the scoreline completely. Ewen had 2 opportunities to remove one of the sitting stones or at least draw into the house but failed on both occasions resulting in a wonderful 8 - Ender for Preston. Ewen’s team rallied to claim back 4 shots in the 8th end but finally lost the game 9 - 11. EDZELL CURLING CLUB 8-ENDER Edzell Curling Club scored an impressive 8-ender while competing in the Miller Bonnet competition at Forfar Curling Centre. Skip Ron Caithness was delighted to secure his first 8-ender ably supported by Lynda Kemp, Russell Brown & Shaun Smith. Congratulations to all. GRAHAM ARNOT Tweet of the Month... COMPETITION AT FORFAR The first FCCC competition of the New Year was held on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th January at Forfar Indoor Sports.

    ISSUE21 Features Events Clubs&Rinks Feb 2014 Your Curler The Royal Caledonian Curling Club Member Ezine Silver and Bronze for Great Britain in the Winter Olympics, Sochi 2014 Great Britain’s Men’s and Women’s Curling Teams both took medals in this year’s Sochi Games which was to be Great Britain’s most successful Winter Olympics to date. The Great Britain Women’s Team, Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, Claire Hamilton and Lauren Gray, secured a Bronze medal after beating Switzerland 6-5 in the Women’s Bronze Medal Game. Story continued on page 2 Barr and MacDonald are 2014 Scottish Curling Champions Team Kerry Barr secured their first Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish Curling Women’s Championship title at Dewars Centre, Perth on Sunday 16th February in an enthralling battle against last year’s finalists Team Hannah Fleming. In the men’s event it was Ewan MacDonald who made his return to the podium for the seventh time as he lead his men to victory in a final that went all the way against David Edwards’ Team. Barr’s Murrayfield rink of Barbara McPake, Rhiann Macleod and Rachael Simms will now go on to represent Scotland at the World Women’s Championship in Saint John, Canada from 15-23 March while Ewan MacDonald, Euan Byers, David Reid and Duncan Fernie head to Beijing, China for the World Men’s Championship from 29 March to 6 April.

    Scottish Disability Sport - The First Fifty Years Richard Brickley MBE Foreword I was delighted to be asked by Chief Executive Gavin Macleod to record the first fifty years of Scottish Disability Sport, to mark the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Association. Initially the project was intended to be small but the more I researched, the more it brought back memories of great athletes, superb volunteers and great times. I became determined to try and do justice to as many as those great people as possible. I am certain I shall have forgotten key people in the eyes of others and if so I apologise profusely. For almost four decades SDS has been for me a way of life. The volunteers I have had the pleasure of working with for almost three decades are those I remember with great fondness, particularly during the early years. I applaud the many athletes who contributed to the rich history and success of SDS over fifty years. Outstanding volunteers like Bob Mitchell, Mary Urquhart, David Thomson, Jean Stone, Chris Cohen and Colin Rains helped to develop and sustain my passion for disability sport. I have been privileged to work with exceptional professionals like Ken Hutchison, Derek Casey, Liz Dendy, Paul Bush, Bob Price, Louise Martin, Sheila Dobie, Fiona Reid, Eddie McConnell, Gavin MacLeod, Mary Alison, Heather Lowden, Lawrie Randak, Tracey McCillen, Archie Cameron and many others whose commitment to inclusive sport has been obvious and long lasting. I thank Jean Stone, Jacqueline Lynn, Heather Lowden, Maureen Brickley and Paul Noble who acted as “readers” during the writing of the history and Norma Buchanan for administrative support at important stages.
