Invariably, we get a polite stare of disbelief when we claim never to have see on-island temperatures above the mid-nine- ties. People from New Jersey or Ohio or Nebraska endure tempera- tures of 100-105 degrees a few times every,summer. They cannot believe that Florida is no hotter than many northern states; Perhaps we should keep the secret. Of course, their extreme tem- pefatures are moderated by arctic highs and other variations. Gener- ally, our weather forecast will read the same on any given day from June to early October. We have uni- formly hot humid days, and eve- nings cooled lusciously by crack- ling storms. At this writing, sum- mer storms haven't given us much relief. Water levels have dropped considerably. A dry summer so far. But as the old saying goes, "it isn't the heat, but the humidity." By August and September, water in the air has worn people down. Lawns grow, it seems, two inches an hour in the humid sunshine and show- ers.
