Trip to Wengen, Switzerland – Tuesday 27Th August 2019 to Sunday 1St September 2019
Capital Walkers- Trip to Wengen, Switzerland – Tuesday 27th August 2019 to Sunday 1st September 2019 Wengen The Bernese Oberland is a great place for walking. Wengen is a car-free village perched on a terrace in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, reached by mountain railway and with spectacular views to the high Alps. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains make a splendid backdrop to the area. Walkers are spoilt for choice for excellent walking trails in the area with stunning scenery. The walks will range in difficulty from easy to moderate/strenuous. You might wish to extend your trip to Switzerland by either coming earlier or staying on afterwards. Wengen Accommodation I propose staying at the Hotel Bellevue, where I have previously stayed a number of times, at the edge of the village on a ‘half board basis’, as this offers good value. The hotel has 3 stars. The rooms are simple but comfortable with en-suite facilities. The evening meal included on the half board basis is five-course. It is a set menu but the hotel, will accommodate dietary requirements if advised in advance. The hotel also has a small a-la-carte menu. 1 The owner of Hotel Bellevue has offered the following discounted rates to Capital Walkers if you would like to stay there. Price per person per night in single rooms (1 person) or in twin rooms (2 persons per room) Bed and breakfast with half-board: North-facing (facing road) CHF 96.- (approx. £81) South-facing (with view) CHF 116.- (approx. £98) Bed and breakfast only: North facing CHF 80.- (approx. -

Tour of the Jungfrau Region
TOUR OF THE JUNGFRAU REGION About the Author Kev Reynolds, who created the Tour of the Jungfrau Region, first visited the Alps in 1960s, and has returned there almost every year since to walk, trek or climb, to lead mountain holidays, devise multi-day routes or to research a series of guidebooks covering the whole range. A freelance travel writer and lecturer, he has a long association with Cicerone Press, which began with his first guidebook Walks and Climbs in the Pyrenees. Published in 1978, it has grown through many editions and is still in print. He has also written more than a dozen books on Europe’s premier mountain range, including 100 Hut Walks in the Alps, Walking in the Alps, The Swiss Alps and Trekking in the Alps, a series of trekking guides to Nepal, a memoir covering some of his Himalayan journeys (Abode of the Gods) and a collection of 75 autobiographical short stories and anecdotes harvested from 50 years of mountain activity (A Walk in the Clouds). Kev is a member of the Alpine Club, the Outdoor Writers’ & Photographers’ Guild, an honorary member of SELVA (Société d’Études de la Littérature de Voyage Anglophone), and the British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML). After TOUR OF THE a lifetime’s activity, his enthusiasm for the countryside in general and mountains in particular remains undiminished, and during the winter JUNGFRAU REGION months he regularly travels throughout Britain and abroad to share that enthusiasm through his lectures. Alpine Notes
ALPINE NOTES • ALPINE NOTES Year of Election. THE ALPINE CLUB OBITUARY: Marindin, G. E. • • • • • • I868 Gilson, R. Cary • • • • • • I8gi Igo8- Igzo Oliver, E. G. • • • • • • Ig26 Coleman, A. P., Ph.D., F.R.S., Honorary Member I9II Wright, H. F. I920 REMOVAL OF LIBRARY. During the crisis of last autumn the safety of the Club's Library and pictures was a matter of anxiety to the officers of the Club. It is not possible to insure against war risks, and in any case insurance is no solution because much of the Club's most valuable property is irreplaceable. It was therefore determined to remove the Library and pictures from the danger zone. Provisional arrangements for such a removal had been made in advance. On Monday, September z6, these were put into effect and the property was· stored in a West of England town. It was all safely returned without damage and one can only hope that the occasion for such a move \Vill not recur. The gratitude of all members is due to those who carried through this arduous task with such skill and promptitude. M u MM's ALPINE CLu B REGISTERS, I8gi- 1895 AND I8g6- Igoi. While still engaged in the collection of data for his Registers, the late A. L. Mumm mentioned that he intended to carry these only as far as the year I895, as he considered that, after that ·date, the qualification forms of the members of the Club as preserved in the bound volumes at the Alpine Club were in fact sufficient as records. This is no doubt true up to a point, but these volumes of qualification forms lack the more intimate biographical details of members as given in M umm' s Registers, to th~ collection of which he devoted much time and expense.
