Contact: [email protected] Symmetry and Proportion: How These Issues Guide, Inform and Add Coherence to Musical Composition by Hugo Ribeiro Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2011 Abstract The central subject of this thesis is the application of the concepts of symmetry and proportion in music and how these can be used to generate original compositions. Information about the musical application regarding concepts of symmetry and proportion both in the twentieth-century and earlier is provided. The first section also offers additional information about the construction of symmetrical harmony and its common usage; here too, principles of intervallic proportion are explained based on the compositional thinking of English composer Christopher Bochmann.

  • Poetry and the Visual in 1950S and 1960S Italian Experimental Writers
The Photographic Eye: Poetry and the Visual in 1950s and 1960s Italian Experimental Writers Elena Carletti Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of Sydney A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2020 This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. This thesis has not been submitted for any degree or other purposes. I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. I acknowledge that this thesis has been read and proofread by Dr. Nina Seja. I acknowledge that parts of the analysis on Amelia Rosselli, contained in Chapter Four, have been used in the following publication: Carletti, Elena. “Photography and ‘Spazi metrici.’” In Deconstructing the Model in 20th and 20st-Century Italian Experimental Writings, edited by Beppe Cavatorta and Federica Santini, 82– 101. Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2019. Abstract This PhD thesis argues that, in the 1950s and 1960s, several Italian experimental writers developed photographic and cinematic modes of writing with the aim to innovate poetic form and content. By adopting an interdisciplinary framework, which intersects literary studies with visual and intermedial studies, this thesis analyses the works of Antonio Porta, Amelia Rosselli, and Edoardo Sanguineti. These authors were particularly sensitive to photographic and cinematic media, which inspired their poetics. Antonio Porta’s poetry, for instance, develops in dialogue with the photographic culture of the time, and makes references to the photographs of crime news.

  • Changing Europe – the Power of Dialogue
Changing Europe – The Power of Dialogue 6 –12 October 2019, Potsdam Changing Europe – The Power of Dialogue 6 –12 October 2019, Potsdam hosted by supported by 2 Changing Europe – The Power of Dialogue In a world that is faster, more complicated and fragmented than ever, it is easy to only speak and never listen, to only tweet and never talk. Pressures of pace and finance are mounting. So it is more important than ever to have strong public service media that provide quality journalism that goes out of its way to be a trusted guide, to bring people together and set a tone that enables dialogue. PRIX EUROPA is ALL about dialogue: Come together from all corners of the continent to exchange views, to see/listen for yourself together with the others, to talk and discuss, to meet and be constructive, rather than judgmental or clever. Grab the opportunity to get into conversation, to change perspective, to challenge your opinions and take away inspiration, a shared experience and new ideas. Cilla Benkö PRIX EUROPA President Director General Sveriges Radio – SR 3 Changing Europe – The Power of Dialogue Dear friends and colleagues, PRIX EUROPA is dedicated to the ideal of a united Europe, which commits itself to democratic, ethical and cultural values. This ideal is, however, in acute danger. We have to dread being abruptly pulled out of a dream that we have been living for over six decades. Of all countries, the Mother of all Democracies, the United Kingdom, is separating itself from our community. Over our Europe of togetherness, that so many people envy us for, the threat of disaster is looming.
