Dukes outlines a system of approaching our experience of our world into four directions: Scient The first time I met Ramsey Dukes, it was over breakfast at the now-defunct Tibetan Tea Shop in Simon's Town. Dukes outlines a system of approaching our experience of our world into four directions: Scientific, Religious, Magical and Artistic. Each is a valid way of evaluating and making decisions. Each has their own purpose, and in fact, he goes on to show how each individual will at different times employ that sort of thinking. Chiefly, he deals with magic, explaining it as an approach that is unafraid to be selective in which criteria one adopts when it comes to problem solving — IOW, the stories that we tell ourselves to explain a set of circumstances. According to Dukes, magic embraces both truth and falsehood, as well as illusion, knowingly. He suggests that it's not so much how one arrives at a solution, but the point that one's actions produces tangible results, even though they might not be considered logical. A magician, according to Dukes, is aware of his surroundings, of the patterns, and is adept in manipulating them according to a particular expression of his will. There's a certain degree of playfulness to it as well, if you ask me. And there's the fact that as a magician you become more aware of the interconnectedness of things around you, and SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic able to manipulate outcome because of the changes you have wrought to your own responses. Imagination is a powerful tool, and we're apt to be dismissive of it, but often this "set dressing" as it were, adds meaning to how we approach our daily challenges. Also, what Dukes points out is that you cannot use the SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic criteria to evaluate magic as you would for, say, religion or science. To do so is absurd and a waste of time. SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic similar to art, magic is about creating and manipulating meaning around you. And to be unafraid to play with subjective viewpoints — and to do so fluidly and not locked down by dogma. He underscores that Magic, Art, Science and Religion should not be at war with each other, but that those forms of approaching our daily lives are often intertwined and various expressions thereof have prominence at different situations. Magic is merely a way to maintain a perception that is different from the norm, it is about creating powerful metaphors that you can use to solve problems or create change, and embraces both light and dark aspects of Self, so is therefore beyond morality. Which is probably why religious folks hate it so much. Magic is what it is, it's how we approach our personal wholeness that matters to us, as individuals, and exploring the unknown. So no dogma, as such. SSOTBME came at a good time for me, when I'd hit a stage in my life where I was wondering what the SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic of it all is in terms of maintaining an interest in esoteric matters. Needless to say, Dukes has offered a rather valuable SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic of looking at my own work. If you've yet to discover his writings, and this seems like the sort of thing that interests you, I can't recommend him enough. He also maintains a YouTube channel that might be worthwhile checking out. Tiene la asombrosa capacidad de no contar nada y transformar tu cerebro. Maravilloso xD. Feb 07, Jason rated it it was amazing Shelves: magickmetaphysics. This is probably one of the most important and life changing books I have ever read. It revealed to me how limiting my way of thinking really was and, more importantly, that there was an alternative. It's possible that I read this at just the right time in my life. It seems like something I should have dismissed out of hand as being irrational, and if read at any other time in my life I probably would have. I can't explain why I was ready to hear this now I needed this book in order to understand how to make Magick part of my life and not just something interesting but impractical. I don't know SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic to say as far as SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic this book. Most people probably just wouldn't get anything out of it. Probably it is most useful for anyone, like me, who has a strong interest in Magick and possibly other types of metaphysics but for whom it SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic just not clicking. Aug 07, Mydyen Seeker added it Shelves: practice. Really wonderful book on magical theory. If you are new to the SSOTBME Revised: An Essay on Magic, and to magic, this is definitely a good book to begin with. May 03, Gary D. A book much like Isaiah Berlin's Roots of Romanticism, where categorization opens new vistas before you. Apr 30, Jessecooperlevy rated it liked it. Just had a dream that I started yet another book instead of finishing the last one. What does that mean? It means I'm writing a review instead of reading. Mar 31, Gary rated it really liked it. One of the book's main premises is that "magick" is a particular way of looking at the world; and this is illustrated by examining it as a "direction" on a compass. Imagine a compass where North is Intuition like spiritual idealsSouth is Observation senses, empiricismEast is Thinking linear, logicaland West is Feeling pattern-matching, instinct. North-South are "data inputs", West-East are "information processing". En lo personal me parece una excelente obra obligada para todos aquellos que quieran acercarse al tema. Mar 17, Jake rated it really liked it. Mar 06, Justin rated it really liked it. Well written and down to earth. Easier to read than most similar books and without unnecessary jargon. Aspects of Tantra 3 One: Setting the scene ention Tantra to most people, and they will invariably think of sex-magic. Only the other day I was chatting over the phone to a friend in America, and happened to mention that I was currently involved with a Tantric magic Mstudy group. My friend became very animated, and in tones of some envy said that he’d always wanted to find a group where people were willing to do Tantric magic with each other. It was at this point that an alarm bell began to ring in my head. “Look,” I said, “I mean Tantric magic, not group sex.” “Oh,” my friend replied, “I wasn’t aware that there was anything more to Tantra than group sex.” Now this kind of reaction isn’t untypical, even among otherwise experienced occultists. Over the last few years, whenever I’ve mentioned my interest in Tantra, I’ve often watched people’s mental gears grinding away as they visualise contorted sexual postures and perhaps, unusual combinations. To think of Tantra only in terms of sexual rites is a gross oversimplification. In fact, Tantrism is a complete magical system in itself, incorporating a wide variety of magical methods and metaphysics.

Readers will discern a strong autobiographical element within these pages. This is a deliberate style, as I have found that the act of unveiling how magic has affected me personally, is a key to communicating the often abstract ideas which relate to the ‘hidden’ faces of magic - which are often difficult to carry across in bite-sized chunks. Simply saying “this is how such-and-such should be done” and leaving it at that - is not an approach which works for me. The magical power of ‘concealment’ is well-known. The power of revealing oneself, warts ‘n’ all, is less well-attested. These four essays reflect different areas of my magical work which I have found, for various reasons, to be at times, problematic. Writing is for me, both an earthing and an exorcism. This collection is not quite ‘practical’ in the same way that my other books are, but nonetheless, I feel that the reader may find some useful points herein, which cross all boundaries of magical activity.

  • Awakening the Great Old Ones by Stephen Dziklewicz
Awakening the Great Old Ones by Stephen Dziklewicz On the night of Tuesday, 24th January 1995 e.v., when the moon was waning and in its last quarter, I performed an Invocation of the Great 0ld Ones. This was based on the research and meditations arising from my work on a Mantra for the Great Old Ones, which had in turn been stimulated by Kenneth Grant’s examination of the word ‘Tutulu’ in his book Outer Gateways. The twin foundations of my own work were two inspired texts, which despite their clearly disparate origins and purposes, had served to transmit the same deep and creative, magickal current. I refer to Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, and to Aleister Crowley’s Liber VII, The Book of the Lapis Lazuli, in the seventh chapter of which is to be found the key mantra of Olalam Imal Tutulu. Prior to the invocation, I finally had succeeded in devising a satisfactory form for the yantra, or Sigil of Awakening, which was derived from the component letters of the mantra, as in the method made familiar by Austin Osman Spare. Although this technique is of sublime simplicity, it is essential that the symbol evolved should be aesthetically resonant with the perceived purpose of the mantra, or spell, for it to serve as an effective vehicle of magickal energy. Several alternative forms may suggest themselves as being suitable for the same sigil; indeed, in the case of a complex spell, such as the one involved here — in which each word is itself a concentrated focus of magickal energy — it may be useful to visualise the sigil as an evolving sequence of images leading up to the most complete form of symbolic expression that is desired.

The lines of tradition within theories on magic that are still influential, such as those begun by Edward B. Tylor and James Frazer (evolutionary), Marcel Mauss and E´mile Durkheim (functionalist), and Lucien Le´vy-Bruhl (par- ticipatory), are based on this distance.1 It was not until more recent ap- proaches that interpret magic within the framework of the history of ideas as an element of an esoteric field of discourse that the perspective widened and became more unprejudiced.2 Nevertheless, these develop- ments did not result in a widely accepted academic definition. The prob- lems of determining the relationship of magic to religion, science, and other fields of social action still persist. One reason may be that such definitions often depend on the individual worldviews and the cultural 1.
