STAR WARS – EPISODE VI : “REVENGE OF THE JEDI ” Written by GEORGE LUCAS [REVISED] ROUGH DRAFT [June 12] © 1981 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… 1. SPACE The boundless heavens serve as a backdrop for the MAIN TITLE. A ROLL-UP crawls into infinity. The Rebellion is doomed. Spies loyal to the Old Republic have reported several new armored space stations under construction by the Empire. A desperate plan to attack the Dreaded Imperial capitol of Had Abbadon and destroy the Death Stars before they are completed has been put into effect. Rebel commandos, led by Princess Leia, have made their way into the very heart of the Galactic Empire: as the first step toward the final battle for freedom…. Pan down to reveal the planet HAD ABBADON, capitol of the Galactic Empire. The gray planet’s surface is completely covered with cities and is shrouded in a sickly brown haze. Orbiting the polluted planet is a small, green, moon, a sparkling contrast to the foreboding sphere beyond. A large IMPERIAL TRANSPORT glides into frame. WE follow it, as it rockets toward the Imperial capitol. Four small TIE FIGHTERS escort the larger craft. The web-like structures of two Death Stars under construction loom in the distance as the transport approaches. Resting to one side of the half completed space station is Darth Vader’s super STAR DESTROYER and several ships of the Imperial fleet. One of the TIE Fighters escorting the Imperial transport begins to wobble and drops back with its engine sputtering.

  • From Sidious to Nixon: the Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam
From Sidious to Nixon: The Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Liberal Arts By Brennan Simpson March, 2021 © 2021 Brennan Simpson 1 In the case of a film franchise that features twelve movies, five television series, and various other forms of media by the time this paper was written, many people may be surprised to hear that Star Wars was actually inspired by one of the most questionable moments in American history. However, the time period in which Star Wars creator George Lucas first wrote what became this world’s ‘‘first step into a larger world’’ actually greatly reflected what ended up on the big screen. Even though the Star Wars movies take place ‘‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….,’’ it has been publicly stated in interviews that Lucas based both Star Wars media on the Vietnam War and their main villain, Darth Sidious, on former U.S. President Richard Nixon. Though there have been a few scholarly works since the first Star Wars movie was released in theaters in 1977 that have attempted to explore these parallels, none of them has directly explored how Lucas’s long-standing views on the Vietnam War affected certain key moments of the first six Star Wars movies. This thesis explores George Lucas’ antiwar activism before creating Star Wars to demonstrate how remarkably similar the films and related media of this franchise truly are to both various aspects of the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon’s rise to power.

  • Do Ewoks Pack a Punch?
Journal of Interdisciplinary Science Topics Do Ewoks pack a punch? Matthew Perkins The Centre for Interdisciplinary Science, University of Leicester 11/04/2018 Abstract This paper aims to calculate the force that would be required to knock out a Stormtrooper with a rock thrown by an Ewok. In order to calculate this, the ways in which a person can get knocked out are explored, finding that the best way is to get the head to rotate in a way such that the brain hits the skull. The spin required to knock someone out was assumed, and was used to work out an angular frequency and subsequently a linear velocity. The force was then worked out, using a number of assumptions regarding the mass of a Stormtroopers head, and it was found that a force of 2797 N would be required to knock the Stormtrooper out. Therefore, the Ewok threw the rock with the same force which was 1.4 times stronger than professional featherweight boxers. Introduction thrown, can give an indication of the strength of the The Ewoks are creatures native to the moon of Endor Ewoks. whose appearance resembles a teddy bear (figure 1; left). • Think Christian
A THEOLOGY OF STAR WARS As a Star Wars-obsessed child in the early 1980s, I would hear rumors that George Lucas envisioned his space saga to be part of an epic, nine-movie cycle. As I mourned the “end” of the series in 1983, with the release of Return of the Jedi, I could only hope that those rumors would someday prove true. So they have, first with the trilogy of prequels, released between 1999 and 2005, and now with an expanding universe of new films, beginning with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and continuing with 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s a Star Wars world once again; we’re just geeking in it. Watching the original movies as a kid, I didn’t much associate their fantastical stories with the biblical narratives I learned at church. Sure, there was good and evil, as well as some vaguely spiritual notion of “the Force,” but in my mind Star Wars and faith were entirely separate things. Clearly I’ve changed my opinion on that, considering I now edit Think Christian, a faith-and-pop culture website that declares there is “no such thing as secular.” So as soon as news broke about plans for The Force Awakens, I knew it would be occasion to turn TC’s distinctive theological lens – with our emphasis on common grace and God’s sovereignty over all things – toward one of the most dominate film franchises in history. We’re thrilled to have gathered some of the sharpest thinkers on faith and popular culture to participate in this endeavor.
