STAR WARS – EPISODE VI : “REVENGE OF THE JEDI ” Written by GEORGE LUCAS [REVISED] ROUGH DRAFT [June 12] © 1981 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… 1. SPACE The boundless heavens serve as a backdrop for the MAIN TITLE. A ROLL-UP crawls into infinity. The Rebellion is doomed. Spies loyal to the Old Republic have reported several new armored space stations under construction by the Empire. A desperate plan to attack the Dreaded Imperial capitol of Had Abbadon and destroy the Death Stars before they are completed has been put into effect. Rebel commandos, led by Princess Leia, have made their way into the very heart of the Galactic Empire: as the first step toward the final battle for freedom…. Pan down to reveal the planet HAD ABBADON, capitol of the Galactic Empire. The gray planet’s surface is completely covered with cities and is shrouded in a sickly brown haze. Orbiting the polluted planet is a small, green, moon, a sparkling contrast to the foreboding sphere beyond. A large IMPERIAL TRANSPORT glides into frame. WE follow it, as it rockets toward the Imperial capitol. Four small TIE FIGHTERS escort the larger craft. The web-like structures of two Death Stars under construction loom in the distance as the transport approaches. Resting to one side of the half completed space station is Darth Vader’s super STAR DESTROYER and several ships of the Imperial fleet. One of the TIE Fighters escorting the Imperial transport begins to wobble and drops back with its engine sputtering. -
MASCULINE REPRESENTATIONS in STAR WARS by NICOLE
UNMASKING HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY: MASCULINE REPRESENTATIONS IN STAR WARS by NICOLE MARTINEZ B.A., University of Colorado Colorado Springs 2017 A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communication 2019 © 2019 NICOLE MARTINEZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii This thesis for the Master of Arts degree by Nicole Martinez has been approved for the Department of Communication by Christopher Bell, Chair K. Maja Krakowiak Katie Sullivan December 16, 2019 iii Martinez, Nicole (M.A. Communication) Unmasking Hegemonic Masculinity: Masculine Representations in Star Wars Thesis directed by Associate Professor Christopher Bell. ABSTRACT Star Wars has influenced generations of American viewers for decades but has gone largely unanalyzed when it comes to a critique of the discourses about masculinity presented in the films. This is problematic as media serves as an agent of socialization, and the representations of masculinity in the Star Wars franchise may influence viewers’ idealization of masculinity leading to real world consequences. The research questions being analyzed in this study are: Is hegemonic masculinity performed by central characters in Star Wars? If so, how is it reinforced, how is it challenged, and how do these change over time? This study uses a critical discourse analysis to analyze the character development of twenty central characters of the Star Wars franchise, how these characters are both challenged and aspire to fall into ideals of hegemonic masculinity, and how these ideals may shift over time. Keywords: Star Wars, Critical Discourse Analysis, Hegemonic Masculinity, Toxic Masculinity iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank all of the people in my life who made it possible for me to submit this thesis and pursue my Masters education. -

Unbound: A Journal of Digital Scholarship Realizing Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Star Wars, Episodes VII, VIII & IX Issue 1, No. 1, Fall 2019 USING THE FORCE OF REPRESENTATION The New Hope Against the Rise of White Nationalism Casey Walker Abstract: Christine Cornea’s article “From Isolationism to Globalism: An Overview of Politics and Ethics in the Hollywood Science Fiction Film” discusses the discourse on nationalism, isolationism, and the fear of globalization in Hollywood’s science fiction films beginning in the 1930s. Cornea concludes these films have an “overwhelming concern with the defence [sic] of the nation throughout this period” and notes “the frequent narrative emphasis on confrontation (whether competitive, threatening, or violent) across circumscribed borderlines.” These filmic manifestations of normative anxiety concerning migration and the immigrant "Other" create a space in which nativism and annihilation of immigrants are celebrated. However, in the most recent installments of the Star Wars franchise, Episodes VII & VIII, the films advocate a more global, borderless society where humans and aliens coexist in a united front of resistance against the Empire. The racial diversity of the human characters further accentuates this conscious effort on the part of the studio and filmmakers to make inclusion and diversity the heart of the resistance against an Empire, which itself is emblematic of the mostly white, mostly male hierarchy of nativism and exclusion. This paper will use previous literature (such as the article mentioned above) to launch a discussion of the ways in which the latest installments in the Star Wars canon subvert the tradition of nationalist and nativist tendencies in science fiction films, creating a diverse resistance, while also serving as fertile ground for a response to the rise of nationalism (specifically white nationalism) in our nation today. -

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS MOCK TRIAL PEOPLE v. REY The Court: Rey has been charged in an information with one count of attempt murder of Kylo Ren in violation of Penal Code sections 664/187. To this charge and allegation, Rey has pled not guilty and the jury will be deciding whether she is guilty or not guilty. The people of D’Qar have the burden of proving their case beyond a reasonable doubt, which means that each member of the jury needs to be convinced of their decision and be comfortable with it -- not only today, but even if we came back and asked you about it years from today. We call this in the law “an abiding conviction.” Do the People wish to give an opening statement? Prosecutor: We do, Your Honor. The Court: You may proceed. Prosecutor: Members of the jury -- The facts will show that this is a simple case of Rey picking up a deadly and dangerous weapon, a lightsaber, and attempting to kill Kylo Ren. The evidence will show that she overpowers him and seriously injured him. She would have killed him if not for Kylo Ren’s daring escape at the last minute. We will call Kylo Ren and an eyewitness, General Hux, who will tell you about this horrible violent act by an out of control girl. You will find at the end of this trial that Rey is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. The Court: Does the Defense wish to present an opening statement at this time? Defense Lawyer: Absolutely, Your Honor. -
