For nearly 20 years, NSI has been delivering professional development programs in close consultation with the industry while fostering talent outside key film and television production centres. As one of four federally recognized and supported National Training Schools for emerging and mid-career writers, producers and directors, NSI now plays a leading role in preparing Canadian content creators for viable and sustainable careers, without their having to relocate to Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver for such training. In the past two years, NSI has restructured and streamlined its core training activities to ensure greater success for our graduates. This past year, we recorded our greatest achievement yet — over 80% of NSI graduates are employed in the film and television industry and 75% have reported career advancements since completing an NSI program. -

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Interview for Not Making It Clear That He Wasn't the Father of the Baby She Miscarried Last May
Love's Story The combative singer-actress embarks on a legal skirmish with her record label that may change what it means to be a rock star. Oh, and she also has some choice words about her late husband's bandmates, her newfound ancestry, Russell Crowe, Angelina Jolie... By Holly Millea | Mar 25, 2002 Image credit: Courtney Love Photographs by Jean Baptiste Mondino COURTNEY LOVE IS IN A LIMOUSINE TAKING HER FROM Los Angeles to Desert Hot Springs on a detox mission. "I've been on a bit of a bender after 9/11," she admits. "I've got a lot of s--- in me. I weigh 147 pounds." Which is why she's checking into the We Care colonic spa for five days of fasting. Slumped low in the seat, the 37-year-old actress and lead singer of Hole is wearing baggy faded jeans, a brown pilled sweater, and Birkenstock sandals, her pink toenails twinkling with rhinestones. On her head is a wool knit hat - 1 - that looks like something she found on the street. Last night she sat for three hours while her auburn hair extensions were unglued and cut out. "See?" Love says, pulling the cap off. "I look like a Dr. Seuss character on chemo." She does. Her hair is short and tufty and sticking out in all directions. It's a disaster. Love smiles a sad, self-conscious smile and covers up again. Lighting a cigarette, she asks, "Why are we doing this story? I don't have a record or a movie to promote. -

Fuller was a victim of a workplace accident, and his ongoing medical issues have led him to hire Laura to see if she can reopen his case. He’s stubborn and won’t listen to Laura’s advice – though he seems to heed it when the same counsel comes from a male colleague. Thinking he has no other option, Fuller decides to take a security guard hostage in order to get his demands met. Laura must act as intermediary and exchange herself for the hostage, trying to convince Fuller to give himself up. -

Eat. Sleep. Watch Dawson's Creek: Teenagers
EAT. SLEEP. WATCH DAWSON’S CREEK: TEENAGERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF TEENAGE LIFE ON DAWSON’S CREEK by AMANDA STEWART HALL (Under the Direction of MARIA CAROLINA ACOSTA-ALZURU) ABSTRACT Drawing on cultural studies, especially Hall’s theory of encoding and decoding of texts (1973), this study examines how a sample of the audience of Dawson’s Creek, a Warner Brothers’ Television show, interpret and relate to the show and whether they incorporate these meanings in their lives. Ten in-depth interviews were conducted with females aged 15- to 21-years-old to discern the reality of representations on the show of teenage life and how these participants engage with the show. Findings suggest the show enables its viewers to identify with the portrayal of the teenage experience, especially when examining the show’s characters. Limitations of the study include the diversity of the sample used. Future research suggestions include an examination of how the show’s messages are encoded by the show’s creative team. In addition, future research should include a more in-depth examination into how Dawson’s Creek has changed the nature of teenage television. The Angelina Jolie Effect: How High Celebrity
Evans et al. Breast Cancer Research 2014, 16:442 http://breast-cancer-research.com/content/16/5/442 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access The Angelina Jolie effect: how high celebrity profile can have a major impact on provision of cancer related services D Gareth R Evans1,2,14*†, Julian Barwell3†, Diana M Eccles4, Amanda Collins4, Louise Izatt5, Chris Jacobs5, Alan Donaldson6, Angela F Brady7, Andrew Cuthbert8, Rachel Harrison9, Sue Thomas10, Anthony Howell1, The FH02 Study Group, RGC teams, Zosia Miedzybrodzka11,12 and Alex Murray13 Abstract Introduction: It is frequent for news items to lead to a short lived temporary increase in interest in a particular health related service, however it is rare for this to have a long lasting effect. In 2013, in the UK in particular, there has been unprecedented publicity in hereditary breast cancer, with Angelina Jolie’s decision to have genetic testing for the BRCA1 gene and subsequently undergo risk reducing mastectomy (RRM), and a pre-release of the NICE guidelines on familial breast cancer in January and their final release on 26th June. The release of NICE guidelines created a lot of publicity over the potential for use of chemoprevention using tamoxifen or raloxifene. However, the longest lasting news story was the release of details of film actress Angelina Jolie’s genetic test and surgery. Methods: To assess the potential effects of the ‘Angelina Jolie’ effect, referral data specific to breast cancer family history was obtained from around the UK for the years 2012 and 2013. A consortium of over 30 breast cancer family history clinics that have contributed to two research studies on early breast surveillance were asked to participate as well as 10 genetics centres. -
