TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK

My Walker of the Week this time around goes to NSW walker Nicole Fagan who, last weekend in Albany, won her first ever Australian Open championship title with her 20km winning time of 1:41:07. While not fast by her standards, it was a fitting reward for her years of training and dedication. She had previously placed second in the 2009 winter 20km championship and third in the 2011 Summer 20km championship. With a number of international representations under her belt already (2008 World Cup Junior 10km, 2011 World University Games 20km and 2012 World Cup 20km), she is a young walker on the improve. Well done Nicole.

WHAT'S COMING UP

Next Saturday sees VRWC walkers back at Middle Park for our annual 'Beat Your Season Best Time' competition. The idea is simple - choose a distance that you have raced over during the winter and then go for it. The person who betters his/her season best by the most in each division gets to pick the prizes table. And a reminder that we are trying to get walkers to pre-enter via our VRWC online entry panel - http://vrwc.org.au/wp1.

Saturday 30th August 2014, Middle Park VRWC EVENTS: Beat Your Season Best time. Prizes for all winners. The winners are the walkers in each race to beat their season best time by the largest margin. 2.15pm 10km Beat Your Season Best Time Open 2.15pm 5km Beat Your Season Best Time Open 2.15pm 3km Beat Your Season Best Time Open 2.15pm 3km Beat Your Season Best Time Under 15 2.30pm 1km Beat Your Season Best Time Under 9 2.40pm 2km Beat Your Season Best Time Under 12

Looking further forward, the Victorian 50km championship will be held on Sunday 14 September. This must be entered via the AV portal http://athsvic.org.au/event/2014-av-walk-series-50km-walk/ and it is open to all currently registered Athletics Victoria walkers. This meet also includes a Australia 50km Championship for Women - any female walker who is a member of one of our racewalking clubs can participate. Entries will be taken on the day or via our VRWC online entry panel.

VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 23 AUGUST

We had a good turnout for our VRWC scratch races at Middle Park on Saturday and conditions were just about perfect, with a sunny and mild winter's day. Only a few more weeks to go until our winter season finishes. And a special welcome back to Anna Wallace after the birth of her first baby.

AUSTRALIAN ROADWALK CHAMPIONSHIPS, ALBANY, WA, SUNDAY 24 AUGUST

The Australian National Roadwalking Championships were held last Sunday in Albany in Western Australia. From what I heard, the organisation was first rate and the 1km lap was well protected and potentially fast. The only thing missing was the walkers. In total, the results sheet shows only 30 walkers in the Athletics Australia Championships and a further 21 in the purely RWA races - 51 all together. Of these, only 15 were from outside Western Australia (QLD 3, VIC 2, NSW 3, TAS 0, ACT 3, SA 4). What a disaster for racewalking and, unfortunately, just as expected. When Athletics Australia asked stakeholders in November 2013 to provide feedback on Albany as a venue, the walking community was united in saying that Albany was not the right choice (I have the various emails saved for posterity). Alas, AA went ahead and confirmed the city, ignoring our concerns. As they say, the proof is in the pudding.

For those who did make the complicated and expensive trip, I am sure that they enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to all our various medallists and congratulations to our new Australian champions. My comments above are not meant in any way to diminish your fine walking last weekend. I reproduce the report published on the AA website:

Dane Bird-Smith (Qld) has successfully defended his national 20km race walking title, streeting the field at the 2014 ‘Go For 2&5’ Australian Race Walking Championships on Sunday in Albany, WA. Bird-Smith won the open national crown in Hobart last year and successfully repeated as national men’s Open 20km race walking champion by crossing the line in Albany in the time of 1:27:38. The Queenslander finished well ahead of second-placed Dale Hennighan (WA), who stopped the clock at 1:43:56 to win silver. Bronze went to Dean Nipperess (Qld) who clocked 1:48:01. Five men lined up for the event on the Flinders Parade 1km loop course, and by the time Bird-Smith came finished the first lap he was already a full 26 seconds clear of Hennighan in second place. After opening with a 4:12 first kilometre, Bird-Smith went 4:12 and 4:14 for the next two laps respectively to set up an unbeatable lead early. He went through the halfway point in 42:31 to lead by over five minutes from his nearest competitor and easily strode to victory.

In the women’s Open 20km event, Nicole Fagan (NSW) was quite literally unchallenged for the national title. Fagen was the only competitor to make it to the start line after a number of athlete withdrawals. Regardless of the lack of female competition, Fagan pushed herself out to a 4:40 first kilometre and challenged herself all the way around the course to cross the line in 1:41:07.

Results follows. Lapsplits available at http://www.nswathletics.info/liveresults/2014/aa_rw.

YOUTH OLYMPICS, NANJING, CHINA, 16-28 AUGUST

The second edition of the Youth Olympic Games is now underway in Nanjing in China. It is a very limited meet with only small numbers of representatives allowed from each major world area. The two racewalks, which were restricted to 16 and 17 year old walkers, have now been contested, with the IAAF “pit lane rule” being used.

Women 5000m Race Walk - 23.08.2014 Chinese walkerZhenxia Ma easily won the women's 5000m walk with an excellent 22:22.08 ahead of Mexican Valeria Ortuño (23:19.27) and Italian Noemi Stella (23:38.10). They had led as a group for the first half of the race before the Chinese walker broke clear. In hot and humid conditions, there were few PBs. Omarchador reported the event, along with some photos, at http://omarchador.blogspot.pt/2014/08/ma-zhenxia-e-nova-campea-olimpica-da.html.

Chama lead early with a group of 6 forming at the head of the race. In the second half, the group was reduced to three and eventually it was Onagawa and Saraykin who fought out the lap, Onogawa eventually winning by around 30m. UKCAU INTER-COUNTIES T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEDFORD, ENGLAND, 24 AUGUST 2014

Thanks to Mark Wall for the latest results from England. Mark reports:

After a battle, by amongst others, the King Twins, and at the behest of UKA and England Athletics, this event was restored to the championships after a hiatus of 2 years. The removal was due to a perceived low numbers of competitors. Some events especially in the middle distance, endurance and some throws this year had lower numbers. It was decided as a development initiative to allow each County three starters, a Senior a U/20 and an U/17. The EA U/17 & U/15 titles next Sunday (plus Summer school holidays) had an impact on the number of younger walkers competing.

Men 3000m, 10:00am Jamie Higgins' pre-race favouritism was not misplaced and he walked a controlled race to record his first sub-12 clocking to comfortably take out the event. He looked in good form after his recent training sojourn at altitude with Tom Bosworth as the latter prepared for his successful race at the European Championships. Olympian Dominic King show sound form to secure yet another placing in this event, he has had a strong history in this event, having secured medals in most of the recent editions. Callum Wilkinson, the most improved and consistent junior male in the UK, opened with sub 4 minute first 1000m, hanging on to record a substantial PB and demonstrate an upward trajectory in the event.

Women’s 3000m, 10:30am Heather Lewis who was left off the original entry list after being mis-entered by West Wales (they entered the wrong name and as well as the wrong event), secured a clear win, taking an early lead and never relinquishing it. She walked strongly to take the title. Ellie Dooley signed off on the season with a sound but isolated second place; she also looked strong and was never challenged after the first lap. It was a race typical of her over the last two years. Former Italian International, Tatyana Gabellone (a post-doctoral Researcher at the University of Bristol, Geology Department), having her first walk in over 2 years, appeared to have 3 rd in her keeping but she did not taken into account a fast finishing Grazina Narviliene (herself an ex-Lithuanian international). Grazina made up the 30-40 metre deficit in the final lap to snatch the bronze medal.

24 HEURES MARCHE DE WADELINCOURT , WADELINCOURT, BELGIUM, 23-24 AUGUST

Thanks to Emmanuel Tardi for the photos, race report and results from the annual Wadelincourt 24 Hour walk. And what a high quality event it was with the first 5 men over 198km and Remi Bonnotte 211.782km and Eddy Roze 201.242km staging a huge race. The women's was no less exciting with Sandra Brown 189.949 winning ahead of Corinne Fauqueue 183.203km. Emmanuel reported:

I was in the small Belgium village of Wadelincourt last Sunday for the first qualification walk for the 2015 Paris-Colmar. The lap was 3.685km long, after an initial shorter lap so that everybody could get a 100km mark on the way through. In the last hour walkers contested a shorter lap of 685m. The temperature was really nice and it was a smooth flat road, except for one small hill.

Eddy Roze and Remi Bonotte started together but Eddy cleared out on his own after a few hours, reaching the 50k mark in 4:45 and the 100km in 10:20 (Remi's splits were 4:55 and 10:37). At 3AM, a very strong rain fell for 30 minutes, forcing Eddy Roze to take a significant stop. Remi passed him to take the lead and then kept it to the end despite his own problems in the last 6 hours.

In the women's race, Sandra Brown and Corinne Fauqueur staged a great battle before Sandra finally broke clear to win, only a few weeks after her victory in the British Centurion qualifying event. There was also an ancillary 6 Hour event with 17 starters (2 teams and 15 individuals). I had gone in Wadelincourt only for pictures and for discussion, but I eventually entered in the race and walked for a little while.

RWA LONG DISTANCE CHAMPS AND 100 MILES, GARONS PARK, SOUTHEND ON SEA, 2-3 AUGUST

The official results from the English Centurions annual 100 mile qualifying event, which was held three weeks ago at Southend on Sea, are now online, along with the race report (see http://www.centurions1911.org.uk/southend-report---results.html) which reads as follows

It must be a first... it didn't rain! However, the wind, at times, more than made up for it.....

The general consensus: Southend 100 miles was one of the most successful and enjoyable 100 mile races in recent times. Southend AC, through June Cork, John Brock, Pam Dawson and Ray Pearce, provided competitors, supporters and spectators alike with a good venue, good organisation and a jolly good race. We had the press, BBC East and the Mayor and Mayoress of Southend visit Garon Park over the weekend.

A track 100 miles is not an easy race. Not much by way of changing scenery and you are back where you started some 3 to 4 minutes later. Willpower and the determination to rise to the challenge is what keeps everyone going. Easier said than done. Best intentions are what we all start off with, but sometimes those gremlins get in the way and it is not to be. Still, we all salute all those who didn't make it - for whatever reason. To sign up, start and make the effort is what it is all about.

Richard Gerrard from the Isle of Man was favourite. Richard qualified as a Centurion last year at the Isle of Man 100 miles. He has also had many successes in the prestigious IoM Parish Walk. Richard also qualified as a Continental Centurion in Schiedam (Rotterdam) only seven weeks before the Southend race, as did relative newcomer to ultra race walking, Jayne Farquhar. Amazing on both counts.

Richard went in to the lead from the start and kept it throughout the entire race. Walking wth fellow Isle of Man walker, Vinny - they showed the way for an awful long time. Sandra Brown (Surrey Walking Club) always has to live up the expectation of being favourite in the ladies race. And true to form, she delivered the goods again - and broke the women's age 65 year record as well.

It was good to see a few newcomers to race walking who wanted to take up the challenge of completing 100 miles in 24 hours. Tony Hill and Mark Haynes are welcome additions to the Brotherhood of Centurions. Let's hope they will come back each year and take up new challenges in the race walking calendar. Richard McChesney, already a New Zealand Centurion (a first to have a NZ Centurion in one of our races?) walked consistently throughout and was ably supported by his young son Zac. Then there were the stalwarts - Martin Fisher, Frans Leitjens, Frank van der Gulik, Jaap Visser who seem to like this kind of thing. It was good to see Centurions Robert de Wolf, Sarah Lightman, Chris Cattano also step up for the challenge - again. Other newcomers such as Kim Reed, Martin Payne, Joyce Crawford , came oh so tantalising close to doing it. Please do come back to try again - you won't regret it!

Richard Brown, Chris Flint, Paul King, Olly Brown, Vinny Lynch - all experienced Centurion walkers who sadly had problems on the day - it does happen. So they didn't make the 100 miles this time. Tribute to Chris Flint who was on the organising Committee and had put in an awful lot of time making the race a success - including on the morning of the race - still busy helping set things up and no time to prepare.

It was a good event. Conditions not always easy (despite the lack off rain!) as the temperature did drop considerably through the night.

Overall, 5 new Centurions (C1130-C1134) with 13 of the 26 starters reaching the elusive 100 mile mark.

The 19th European Veterans Championships are currently underway in Izmir, Turkey. The 5000m track walks were contested yesterday (Monday 25 August) in what was described as hot conditions and the 20km roadwalks are still to come. Full results can be seen at http://www.fidalservizi.it/risultati/Izmir_2014/RESULTSBYDAY4.htm. There is also a nice writeup of the women's 5000m walks at http://omarchador.blogspot.pt/2014/08/portuguesas-com-ouro-nos-5000-m-de.html.

I've been able to find the combined results from the W35-55 women's 5000m race so reproduce that set. To get the rest, I would need to go right through the individual age groups and then cut and paste and format their respective results and that's a big job that will have to wait.

THE CHEGIN SAGA CONTINUES

Two further news items on what we might term the Chegin Saga.

First to Saransk where an extension to their racewalk training centre, ironically called the Victor Chegin Centre, has been opened. See this video of the opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJEszi0voY4&feature=youtu.be) and this press release which discusses the opening and the wider issue of drugs and Russian racewalking (http://itar-tass.com/sport/1391043).

Then to an AAP press release which was republished in The New Zealand Herald yesterday. It reads as follows (see http://www.nzherald.co.nz/athletics/news/article.cfm?c_id=19&objectid=11314190&ref=rss )

MOSCOW (AP) The Russian Anti-Doping Agency suspended one of the country's top race-walking officials on Monday in connection with a major doping investigation. Viktor Kolesnikov is a director of Russia's race-walking center in the city of Saransk. The center has turned Russia into the dominant country in the sport, but has also seen at least 17 of its athletes banned or suspended for doping. Some of the athletes affected include Olympic 20-kilometer champion , banned for two years in June, and , stripped of his 2010 European gold medal last month. RUSADA said Kolesnikov is accused of "a possible breach of anti-doping rules," but did not provide further details. The agency announced last month it was investigating the Saransk center citing "multiple disqualifications of athletes." IAAF vice president Sergei Bubka has said the sport's governing body is also investigating following an online campaign led by Olympic walking medalist Jared Tallent, who has demanded Russian walking coach Viktor Chegin be banned from the sport over his athletes' doping record. Bubka said on Twitter in June that the IAAF was "looking into" claims of malpractice in the Russian team following Tallent's campaign and that the IAAF's race-walking officials had "raised serious concern." Chegin was removed from the country's delegation for this month's European Championships by the Russian Athletics Federation after Lashmanova was banned, but remained in his job and did eventually attend the competition in Zurich. Chegin has been in charge of all training for more than a decade at the Saransk center, which has been renamed in his honor.

OUT AND ABOUT

A bit of a plug for my old mate John Timms who has done a number of our ultra walks over the years, including last year's 24 Hour walk at Middle Park. John is taking on a serious challenge in October and will compete in the inaugural Adelaide 6 Day Race (in his more familiar running mode this time). It is quite a few years since our last 6 Day event here in Australia and it is expected to be a very competitive event. You can read more about John's challenge at http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/news/cliff-youngs-spirit- powers-colac-mans-marathon-effort/story-fnjuhxh0-1227003068630

FOCUS ON MICHAEL BODEY

Time to zoom in and say a few words about one of our very regular VRWC members in Michael Bodey. Michael is at walkers club at Middle Park just about every week, helping with pre-race registrations and then judging or officiating in whatever capacity is required. He is one of the many dedicated people who keep the club ticking along but did you know that he was a pretty fair walker in his heyday.

I first met Michael in the early 1980's when competing in an A Grade Interclub meet at Olympic Park one Thursday evening. He came up to say hello and advised me that he was at Marcellin College, the same school as I had gone to, and that he was going to have a go for my school 1500m walk record that night. Well, he took a couple of records off my time (I think by memory the record was around 6:50 and he did around 6:48 but don't quote me on that one).

Michael was always a member of Doncaster Athletics Club and also joined VAWC early on in his career and competed with us throughout the eighties. He had many good performances, some of which include

• A win in the RWA 10km in Brisbane in August 1985, defeating Andrew Ludwig and Jack Grimanes (NSW) • Almost beating Andrew Jachno into third place in the Victorian 5000m track walk in March 1986 • Coming 8th in the 1986 National 5000m track walk in Adelaide in a time of 21:54 • Coming 6th in the 1989 National 5000m track walk in Brisbane in a time of 21:33.

Michael was basically self coached, although John Hirst coached him at Doncaster in late 1988 and early 1989. That was when he was walking at his peak. His advice o new walkers: I did not train like a lunatic. My best advice is to enjoy yourself and not train too hard. Save yourself for races. Eat plenty of chocolate. Hmmm .. I like the idea of the chocolate!

Left: Michael in racing mode circa 1990 Right: Michael on the DQ table in 2010 - discussing the finer points of walking with Jim Leppik

Michael has been a club contributor for many years now with official stints as follows

• Vice Captain and AV delegate 1989-1993 (4 years) • Race Secretary 1999-2000 (1 year) • Treasurer 1999 - 2007 (8 years) • Committee Member - off and on for well over 15 years and still a current committee member.

Michael commented to me re his VRWC association: VRWC is like family to me. A great place to share problems. A great place to be involved and a broad range of jobs to be done. All my friends are down here. I hope to be a contributor for another 30 years.

He has also judged racewalking continuously since late 1998 after returning to Melbourne from a 3 year stint interstate. He also did a bit of judging and officiating whilst he was an athlete. He has also done many years of officiating with Doncaster Athletics Club in his post-athlete career.

Some final words from Michael which do tend to put things into perspective: My saddest moment in racewalking was losing Andrew Ludwig to a car accident in January 2009. All track and road achievements pale into insignificance when you lose your best friend.

Thanks for sharing this with us Michael. May you have many more years of enjoyment with us at Middle Park. See you on Saturday

CELEBRITY PICS

Time for something different. I was in Adelaide last weekend and stayed with former British and Australian racewalking representative Peter Fullager (see http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/articles/wa-peter-fullager.pdf for details of his wonderful career). Of course, we got talking walking and I asked him for a look at his own archives. Amongst the many wonderful items in the box was this great celebrity photo picture of him with Pope Paul VI.

The caption reads as follows:

Castel Gandolfo, Italy, Sept 4 1967. Pope Paul hands a medal to Peter Fullager, a Briton competing for the SALV club of Lugano, Switzerland, during an audience here yesterday after Fullager won the Rome-Castel Gandolfo walking race. The man at the centre is unidentified. Peter not only won the race - it was also a race record. In fact, Peter was the only British walker to win all three of the Italian classics. On 3 September 1967, he won the Rome to Castel Gandalfo (31.5 km) in a new course record. A month later, on 1 October 1967, he won the Giro de Roma (approx 25 km). Finally on 5 May 1968, he won the Milan 30 km, setting a new course record and beating the 1964 Olympic champion Abdom Pamich.

I am reminded of the photo of VRWC walker Cassie Raselli with our then prime minister Julia Gillard a couple of years ago. Cassie was warming up for her event at the Lake Burley Griffin Carnival in Canberra and the prime minister was out for an early morning walk and their paths crossed.

I might run with this theme for a few weeks. If you have a celebrity pic that you would like to share, forward it to me and it might even end up in the newsletter!
