6 The Nursery Ministry Elevator Going??

n a Sunday in March, 2014, Peter, Marlene, Jacki and I got in the OCabrini elevator after mass, to go downstairs for hospitality. Jackie had to use a knee scooter, and the rest of us will never run marathons. The elevator doors closed, and nothing happened. Jacki called hubby George with her cell phone, so people outside the elevator quickly knew we were trapped. But there we were; the lights and air circulation worked, but we couldn’t get the elevator to move or open the door. Cabrini All-Read Aftermath

Many of you have read and discussed the position paper, “Toward a Healthy Christian Theology of Sexuality,” which was a sponsored project of the Catholic Coalition of Church Reform and chosen by the Cabrini members through the Education Committee as the text for this year’s parish “all read” selection. You may be wondering where we will go from here. We have been promoting discussion groups and listening sessions in this diocese related to the topics addressed in the booklet and under discussion at both last year’s and this year’s synods in Rome—artificial contraception, homosexuality, divorce and remarriage. When members of CCCR met recently with Archbishop Neinstedt, we discussed how we might work together and help the archdiocese prepare itself to respond to Pope Francis’s invitation to listen to the voices of those with lived experience on these topics. The input we will have received from the many who will have attended discussion groups and listening sessions will have been recorded and forwarded to the American bishops who will represent the American Church in Rome. Also in conjunction with the issues addressed in this paper, a concern was raised about the increase of rape on college campuses. This in turn has led to a committee surveying what sexual and moral instruction youngsters are receiving in their development of right relationships in both Catholic and other schools from kindergarten through college. We have found a great disparity and stringent limitations of what is and can be presented in our Catholic schools, confirmation classes, middle school catechesis, etc. The committee is studying what formats are available and which ones might best prepare our youth in forming strong, lasting, safe, moral and satisfying relationships. It is our hope to be able to present the results of our search to parents with young children for their consideration.

16 Lone Chair An empty chair in an empty room Silently speaks of needs to change Changing away for better times, To stand and mature, time to grow. To say good-bye to silent days to smiles and hugs and new obligations Yet it cries for someone to sit in its space. Not questioning the future of its life. As silence will soon be replaced By joys of crowds in newer rooms Questions replaced with care and actions Time to finally close the doors Walk away and don't look back But the wonder will always remain alive What will happen to its lonely seat Spiky green snowdrops As desires will thrive to return to its place Ridiculously early To hopefully view the one who took the seat Pierce through dry brown In what had been a lonely chair leaves Hopefully now surrounded with newer life and love again. ––Bev Reid – Kara Kirsch
