Changes to the government structure will help better meet these priorities. Government’s increased focus on culture is reflected in the new Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit which also has responsibility for the voluntary sector and the Human Rights Commission. The new Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will help fulfill government’s plan to ensure affordable housing is available to all Albertans and to address emerging urban issues.

Among other discussion points, we asked Mr. Grant that Alberta Energy consider establishing a policy through regulation, Order-in-Council or Ministerial Statement with respect to burying new high voltage power lines whenever they run near homes, schools, daycares, hospitals and environmentally sensitive areas. (A regulatory amendment, Order-in-Council or Ministerial Statement, as opposed to legislation, could be drafted and approved very quickly.) We further suggested that the 500kV double circuit Heartland Transmission Line could be considered a “model” or “pilot” in this regard. Mr. Grant indicated to us that he would be discussing this request with you on April 8, 2010. We made this request, in light of the many documented health, safety, property value, environmental and aesthetic impacts of overhead high voltage power lines. Fact sheets on the many impacts are available at www.RETA.ca . An objective Leger Marketing public opinion survey conducted late last year of 900 randomly-selected Albertans indicates that the vast majority of Albertans are concerned about the negative impacts of overhead high voltage power lines (Fact Sheet #26). There are many benefits of burying high voltage power lines (Fact Sheet #8).
