    Broadcasting Authority of Ireland Review of Sound & Vision 3 July 2019 Mediatique Limited 65 Chandos Place London WC2N 4HG UNITED KINGDOM www.mediatique.co.uk BAI – Review of Sound & Vision 3 Executive summary Objectives, methodology and outline of the scheme ▪ Mediatique was commissioned to assist the BAI in their statutory obligation to review the operation, impact and effectiveness of the Sound & Vision 3 Broadcasting Funding Scheme. ▪ The review requires an assessment of how the scheme operates and performs against its stated objectives, and in particular the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations, its impact on the value chain and on production and availability of (in particular) Irish-language content and its role and impact within the current media landscape. ▪ A key aim of the report is to provide a comprehensive basis for informing the BAI on developing a revised scheme(s) in 2020. In this context, we were asked to consider how robust the scheme and its successors are likely to be, now and in the future, given any anticipated changes in the broadcasting landscape over the next 5-10 years, as well as the impact of any scheme that may operate adjacent to a new scheme or schemes (e.g., funds sourced from new content levies or other funding sources). ▪ A range of research methodologies was required to inform the various aspects of the review, including: a review of internal BAI data; secondary research; a bespoke consumer survey (delivered by Ipsos MRBI); an online survey of producers; and stakeholder interviews. ▪ S&V3 has been in operation since 2015, and in that time 10 funding rounds (numbering 23 through 32) have been completed.

Riggs School of Social Work Flinders University GPO Box 2100 Adelaide South Australia 5001 [email protected] Clemence Due School of Psychology The University of Adelaide South Australia 5001 [email protected] Keywords: accusations of racism, race privilege, celebrity big brother Abstract The 2007 UK series of Celebrity Big Brother drew considerable attention to Britain as a result of the alleged racist bullying of Bollywood film star Shilpa Shetty by four British celebrity housemates. At stake in these allegations was any perception that Britain as a country promotes inclusivity and discourages racism. In this paper we examine, through an analysis of the exit interviews conducted with the four housemates in question, how accusations of racism were made by the host of Big Brother, and how racism was almost made to disappear in the interviews. Specifically, we elaborate how racism was constructed not simply as an individual aberration, but more precisely as a matter of perception. We then explore how the host of the interviws avoided making accusations of racism herself by implying that it was others who perceived the behaviours of the housemates as racist, and by using other words (such as ‘bullying’) rather than explicitly referring to racism. We conclude by outlining the implications of our findings for future discursive research on racism, and we emphasise the need to further explore how rhetorical strategies aimed at denying racism operate in the service of shoring up privileged identities. Gundersen May 1, 2014 Professor Richard Linowes – Kogod School of Business University Honors Spring 2014 Gundersen 1 Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship ESPN has with the sports broadcasting industry. The study focuses on future prospects for the industry in relation to ESPN and its most prominent rival Fox Sports. It introduces significant players in the market aside from ESPN and Fox Sports and goes on to analyze the current industry conditions in the United States and abroad. To explore the future conditions for the market, the main method used was a SWOT analysis juxtaposing ESPN and Fox Sports. Ultimately, the study found that ESPN is primed to maintain its monopoly on the market for many years to come but Fox Sports is positioned well to compete with the industry behemoth down the road. In order to position itself alongside ESPN as a sports broadcasting power, Fox Sports needs to adjust its time horizon, improve its bids for broadcast rights, focus on the personalities of its shows, and partner with current popular athletes. Additionally, because Fox Sports has such a strong regional persona and presence outside of sports, it should leverage the relationship it has with those viewers to power its national network.
