  • Understanding the Place-Specific Formation Processes of Sustainable Urban Experiments a Mixed Method Comparative Case Study of Formula E
Master’s thesis - master Innovation Sciences Understanding the place-specific formation processes of sustainable urban experiments A mixed method comparative case study of Formula E July 27, 2021 Author: Marius Roeterdink, BSc Student number: 5673127 Contact: [email protected] Supervisor: Dr. J. Hoekman Second reader: Dr. ir. J.C.L Torrens Master’s Thesis – Master Innovation Sciences GEO4-2239X Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University 0 Place-specific formation processes of sustainable urban experiments Abstract Cities are increasingly recognized as frontrunners in the transition to a more sustainable society due to their assembly of technology, resources, population, culture, and economics. This is, amongst others, visible from a global increase in urban actors collaborating to experiment with new sustainable configurations. These so-called sustainable urban experiments, embedded in a broader niche, are not confined to a specific spatial context but will rather emerge in complex ‘place bundles’, forming a global niche. However, the formation of a global niche is interrelated with local experimentation and is thereby locally rooted. A prime example is sustainable motorsports experiment Formula E. Formula E operates on a global scale with numerous multinational companies involved but is set in urban environments and the local regional context arguably influences the formation of such events. In other words, Formula E is a global sustainable urban experiment which is locally embedded. Considerable variation in the way a sustainable urban experiment is formed locally is likely to exist. The objective of this study was to complement strategic niche management and sustainable transitions literature by understanding the specific place-specific factors under which global sustainable urban experiments are formed.

  • Formula E 2016/2017 – Home Glory for the MICHELIN Pilot Sport
MEDIA INFORMATION 2016/2017 FIA Formula E Championship ePrix of Paris – 6th round Home glory for the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2 The second running of the Paris Formula E ePrix took place in a festive atmosphere after the 7,000 grandstand seats sold out within 24 hours of going on sale, while more than 10,000 people explored the e-Village which was entirely free this year. A number of ‘fan zones’ located around the circuit enabled racing fans and casual visitors alike to enjoy a variety of entertainment and follow the action on giant screens. Seen mixing it with the public was the Michelin Man who is always a popular hit at events, while out on the track the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2 Formula E – which was introduced at the start of the 2016/2017 championship – was making its debut appearance in the streets of the French capital. With the exception of the pit lane exit, which was slightly modified compared with 2016, the circuit was identical to the 1.920km layout (14 turns: 6 left / 8 right) used last season. And once again, it proved particularly popular with both the drivers and the local spectators, most of whom would probably never have imagined that their city would one day host a major motor race in the heart of the Hôtel des Invalides district! “The feedback we have had from our partners about the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2 since the start of the 2016/2017 campaign has been positive,” remarks Serge Grisin, the manager of Michelin’s Formula E programme.

2017 INTRODUCTION Felix Rosenqvist is a Swedish racing driver, competing in the 2016-17 FIA Formula E Championship with Mahindra Racing. He is the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European champion. Felix Rosenqvist is the only driver in the history of Formula 3 to have won each of the accolades that make up the category’s “grand slam”: the European Championship (2015), the Grand Prix de Pau (2014), the Masters of Formula 3 (twice in 2011 and 2013) and the blue- riband Macau Grand Prix (twice in 2014 and 2015). In 2016, Rosenqvist dovetailed race-winning campaigns in the American Indy Lights series and Europe’s Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup, while simultaneously racing in the top-level DTM touring car series with Mercedes-AMG. He also conducted a successful test in the Verizon IndyCar Series, America’s leading single-seater championship. Towards the end of 2016, Rosenqvist entered the Formula E arena after signing for Mahindra Racing, with the first round of the 2016-17 season taking place in Hong Kong on October 9. On his series debut, he set the fastest lap of the race, before going on to claim a headline- grabbing maiden pole position and podium in only his second start in the championship in Marrakesh, Morocco. 2017 sees Felix Rosenqvist intensify his pursuit of a maiden Formula E victory. He remains part of the Mercedes-AMG family. • Press Release
Press Release MAY 13, 2017 Renault e.dams dominate the Monaco ePrix Renault e.dams leave the Principality with a return to the winning feeling: from pole to victory, Séb Buemi scored a total of 28 points ,while from the back of the grid, Nico Prost made a strong comeback to finish in the points with ninth place. The second visit to the Monaco ePrix opened under blue skies and in sunny conditions. All drivers were eager to go on track as there was no shakedown on Friday. Séb Buemi underlined his strong form by topping both Free Practice sessions. Not only that, the Swiss driver was the first man to dip under the 53s barrier and he also bettered his own laptime from 2015 by 1.6s. Nico Prost finished second with a laptime of 53.237s in FP1 and eighth during FP2. The championship leader drew Qualifying group 1 while his teammate got group 2. After a mature drive, Séb Buemi set the fastest lap of his group and made it to Super Pole. He then kept his head clean and went 0.237s quicker than his closest rival Lucas Di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport). Unfortunately for Nico Prost, he had to settle for P19 after clipping the barrier at the start of his flying lap. Séb Buemi produced a masterful drive from start to flag: he managed to lead the rest of the pack after Turn 1 and at the restart after a safety car period due to a collision between JeanEric Vergne (Techeetah) and Nelson Piquet Jr (NextEv).

  • Points in Paris for BMW I and MS Amlin Andretti
Media Information FIA Formula E Championship 20th May 2017 Points in Paris for BMW i and MS Amlin Andretti. • Robin Frijns finishes sixth for MS Amlin Andretti in the Paris ePrix. • Eventful race in the French capital. • António Félix da Costa forced to retire after on-track collision. Munich. In an eventful Paris ePrix, Robin Frijns (NLD) scored sixth place, scoring more points for MS Amlin Andretti in the FIA Formula E Championship. António Félix da Costa (POR) was forced to retire after a crash with another competitor. The Qualifying Qualifying was a mixed session for MS Amlin Andretti. With a strong performance, Robin Frijns put his ATEC-002 in eighth position – his time of 1:02.654 was just 0.043 seconds shy of the Super Pole session. A penalty for another competitor meant the Dutchman would start the race in seventh place. For António Félix da Costa, it was a disappointing session, as he could manage only 17th, with 1:03.268. The Race From the start, Frijns was able to hold his position and race solidly in the opening stint. Félix da Costa, meanwhile, found it difficult to make up places, but did pass Lucas di Grassi (BRA) for 16th position but while fighting over the place, the two made contact, with the car forced into the inside wall. It was heavily damaged, and Félix da Costa had to retire from the race. The incident caused a full course yellow, at which point Frijns pitted and retained his seventh position. With a great pass he improved by one place and after an accident for second-placed Jean-Eric Vergne (FRA) – which also saw the Qualcomm Safety Car BMW i8 deployed – the Dutchman moved into fifth position.
