In April, the Potomac Skye Terrier Club held another successful specialty show in conjunction with the Columbia Terrier Association of Maryland’s group show. Now, we are starting to gear up the planning for the 2012 show. As we put the finishing touches on this issue, we are days away from the 2011 Montgomery Weekend and all of its Skye activities. We are so looking forward to entire weekend and especially the Potomac Skye Terrier Club’s Terrier-ific Booth where we sell terrier-related merchandise and collectables to benefit PSTC. We will also have the club’s Kiss the Skye Public Education table with sweet Skyes available for the public to meet. The Potomac Skye Terrier Club continues to be blessed with a group of members who share in a dedication to promote the breed and to support all who own and love Skyes. As always, I welcome all ideas on how we can improve our club and our public outreach. You may have noticed a number of fabulous images in this issue of The Potomac Piper. We have been extremely fortunate to receive a collection of antique postcards from PSTC member Sandra Goose Allen. It was Sandra’s wish that the images be shared in this publication. A heartfelt thanks to Sandra! Michael J. Pesare Postcard image from the collection of PSTC member Sandra Goose Allen 3 What’s in a Name? By Carol G. Fink Home, for me, is Yountville, California a tiny town of 3,000 nestled in the Napa Valley. We are home to 12 restaurants, from a local-serving Pacific Blues to the Michelin star French Laundry and thanks to its famed-chef, Thomas Keller, we are home to several 1 and 2 star restaurants, as well. Considering the town is only two major streets wide, and less than a mile across, and that there are a dozen wine-tasting rooms, as well, you get the sense of what matters here. Thus when I picked up my Gleanntan baby girl “Green Girl” Michael and I were choosing a registered name. He asked, “What do you like to do at home?” Well, I said I, eat, drink, and make reservations. A light bulb went on and Gleanntan Gottamakereservations was a perfect fit. We seem to be the culinary capitol of the country, and Miss Tara, as I call her, acts as if the whole town is hers. Thus, when it was time to take a photo of Miss T. after her first show points, it seemed logical to visit our favorite restaurant, which got its name from at one time, having been a real French laundry. Clothespins are its logo, appropriately. Being asked for directions to the Gourmet mecca, is the most frequent tourist question, and I am truly honored to consider Thomas and his awesome staff, my friends. The bronze plaque is very small, really, but Tara gladly sniffed the lavender and gladly obliged with my friends camera. Latara was one of Lucas’ original Star Wars Ewoks, and I saved that name for my gray girl, who always brings a grin, as she does her cuddly Ewok antics, fuzzy, cuddly BUT a little warrior, if she must. How blessed am I to be sharing my life with her in a “slice of Paradise”, truly a bit of heaven on earth. With thanks from the bottom of my heart, to Maida, Michael, Roxan, for bringing Tara into my life. I am blessed. 4 Archie’s Adventure Archie, full title Dolphaz Digger, is a Skye Terrier who lives like a king in London UK with his owner Sue McGowan. He does all the normal things Skye Terriers do but he has also been known to do a modelling session for the men’s magazine “Esquire”. However his biggest claim to Skye Terrier fame is his escapade whilst on a visit to Ham Polo club with Charlotte McGowan. Sue’s daughter Charlotte helps out at the polo club and one day thought it would be a treat for Archie to accompany her. It was the end of the season and the ponies had all gone home for the winter so there was no danger of him getting kicked Photo credit: Dan Burn-Forti or trodden. Charlotte was helping to clean tack, tidy up and do all the other end of season jobs and Archie was enjoying investigating the premises. She kept checking and there he was each time until about 4:30 pm and “Oh dear where is he?” She called and called but no sign of Archie anywhere. She called her mother who came to help look for him and they searched every bush, building and field but he’d vanished. An hour later they were starting to imagine all sorts of terrible things when the phone rang. It was Sue’s husband Jack; he asked had they found him and when they said not he replied “I didn’t think you had because he’s here at home.” Jack had found him standing outside their gate tongue lolling and looking mighty pleased with himself at getting home in time for dinner. The amazing part of this story is that Ham Polo club is 3 mile from Archie’s home, he had never been there before and he had crossed London city during rush hour to get back home. His journey entailed crossing the very busy road outside the club, going up Star and Guarter Hill and into Continued on page 6 5 Continued from page 5 Richmond Park which has a perimeter of over 7 miles. He is exercised daily in the Park but not at the end nearest the polo club. Also he is always taken by car and so doesn’t know the route to or from the park on foot. He had somehow found his way through the park, probably exiting via Sheen Gate and then through the back streets of Parkside. Then, miraculously, he had safely crossed the busy Upper Richmond Road and a railway crossing onto Mortlake Green. Here he was seen following a lady who was travelling home past his house. It was easy then, a few quieter roads to negotiate and home he landed. How’s that for doggy sat nav. How he had not been hit by a car or a train or been picked up by someone is quite incredible. Needless to say he won’t be going back to the Polo Club. He obviously wasn’t impressed and dinner was much more important. Modelling is so much safer. At this time I would describe my career as “volunteerism.” This fall I am spearheading a program to provide transportation for seniors enabling them to remain independent and meet their daily obligations. Cazenovia has no public transportation. Yes, volunteer drivers drive seniors with pets to veterinarian appointments or services for shots etc.In January I will begin training to do income tax for the elderly in our county. The rewards from helping others in these two programs is many fold and an important part of my life. Equally important is my Skye Terrier, Beamer - Gleanntan's Brite'nshiningstar. He is an Emily pup and just turned seven years old. I can never express the depth of my gratitude to Maida and Michael for placing this wonderful boy with me. I have had Skyes in my home for forty years and my dogs have made my house a home. In these times, as we are surrounded with stress, each day my greatest joy and biggest smile comes from...
