Julian Spooner Merton’s Borough Commander, London Fire Brigade

Why did you decide to become a firefighter? I am part of a family of volunteer firefighters. I would like to say that instilled a sense of public service in me. Actually I joined the London Fire Brigade because I thought (very naively) that it would pay for flying lessons, as I wanted to be a pilot. Twenty plus years later and guess what, I’ve never taken a flying lesson!

What’s the best part of your job? And the most challenging? I’ve worked with some fantastic people in some challenging situations and it’s been a real privilege to be appointed as the Fire Borough Commander for Merton. One day I can be working in the community to reduce fires. The next I can be on an operational incident that requires fast, time-critical decisions. While that variety is the best part, it’s also the most challenging as I have to keep a number of plates spinning to do my job effectively.

Any words on Halloween and bonfire night? Please, please take the time to look at the London Fire Brigade website for advice on how to celebrate these events safely. Most of the incidents I attend around those celebrations could have been prevented.
