INTRODUCTION The total coast line of Pakistan is about 1120 Km the western region (Makran coast) extends from Hub river to Iranian border. Makran coast is about 772 Km long. The South Eastern Region (Sindh coast) extends from Hub River to Sir Creek on the Indian border and is about 348 Km long. The continental shelf of Makran coast lies between 16 to 24 Km and falls sharply to great depths. Whereas, in Sindh coast the continental shelf is shallow and is about 125 Km. According to constitution of Pakistan, the marine waters are divided into the administrative areas: (i) Territorial waters (from base line upto 12 nautical miles, seaward). These waters have jurisdiction of the maritime provinces of Sindh and Balochistan. (ii) The waters between 12 nautical miles and 200 nautical miles: the Federal Government has jurisdiction on this area. Pakistan has rich marine resources in its coastal areas. Since ages, fishing has been the main livelihood of the coastal fishermen. Although, rapid changes have taken place in the world fisheries by introducing modern sophisticated fishing vessels and gear. However, the marine fisheries of Pakistan is still in primitive stage. The local small scales wooden fishing boats are not capable to harvest deep water resources. As such, deep water area remained un-exploited. Therefore, in the past a limited licenses were given to the local parties allowing them to undertake joint venture with foreign parties to harvest tuna & tuna like species in EEZ of Pakistan beyond 35 nautical miles. The operation of these vessels was subject to fulfillment of provision of Deep Sea Fishing Policy including strict surveillance and monitoring by Marine Fisheries Department (MFD), Maritime Security Agency (MSA), port inspections, installation of vessel-based unit of Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), MFD representative / observer on each vessel during each trip, restriction on discard of fish at sea, having penalties on violation of regulations etc. -

Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. Summary The Government established the Committee on Sustainable Fisheries (the Committee) in late December 2006 to study the long term directions and goals as well as feasible options and strategy for the sustainable development of the local fisheries industry. The results of the study will be submitted to the Food and Health Bureau for consideration. 2. Following careful consideration of the situations of the international and local fisheries industries, as well as the contributions of the local fisheries industry to Hong Kong’s economy and society, the Committee agrees that the local fisheries industry has changed in tandem with Hong Kong’s economic development. However, the local fisheries industry, as an important local cultural asset with a long history, is sufficiently valuable and has potential for sustainable development. 3. The goals of the sustainable development of the fisheries industry are to enable fishermen and fish farmers to achieve self-reliance, help them maintain their own livelihoods and cope with the changing business operating environment, provide job opportunities to the fisheries community and ensure the supply of fresh and quality fisheries products to Hong Kong people. Meanwhile, our society will benefit from a sustainable fisheries industry, as it will help establish and maintain a marine ecological environment that is abundant in resources and can be passed on to our future generations. -

It provides methods for profiling fishing fleets according to the available data and different management needs. Its aim is to provide a practical guide which makes these methods easily accessible, and which demonstrates the principles underlying the different standard techniques for profiling fishing fleets without claiming to eliminate the need for expert statistical analysis of complex multivariate data sets. The methods presented are of specific interest to technical staff in Fisheries Departments and those responsible for the collection and analysis of data on fishery resources and fleets. This work is based on experiences profiling different fishing fleets, notably the Moroccan coastal fishery and the artisanal fishery of Senegal, as well as numerous studies carried out by Ifremer on French fisheries. Kazmi Marine Reference Collection & Resource Centre, University of Karachi ABSTRACT Key-words: INTRODUCTION Balochistan coast extends about 772 km between the Hub river in the east and border of Iran in the west. The coast may be characterized by a bay, the ”Sonmiani Bay”, backed by a lagoon called the Miani Hor (1,600km2) (Fig-1). The lagoon displays a variety of geomorphic and biological features which are very important for the ecological study of the coast. The coastal area of Balochistan is known to have a well diversified marine fauna and flora. The fish fauna is also diverse and more than 5oo fish species, 12 of squids/cuttle fish/ octopi, 5 species of lobsters and 5 species of shrimp are recorded. The main resources of Balochistan have not been fully exploited except for fish. The total fish production of Balochistan coast during the period from 1991-to-2002 showed steadily increasing trend. The production increased from 107081mt, to 123000mt in 2000. The rate of increase was 1.47% per year (Table-1). In the year 2000, fish and fishery export products of 84.693mt, a valued of Rs. 7.878 billion were exported from Pakistan. During the year 2000 out of total production, 123000mt (25.9%) were contributed by Balochistan (Source: FAO & M.F.D. 2001). In addition the total marine resources of Pakistani water is estimated to be about 600,000 mt/year, out of which inshore waters are 500,000 mt and offshore water (EEZ) are 100,000 mt approximately. -

Subpart 4-Bureau of Regulatory Services Chapter 11-Guidelines For Aquaculture Activities Introduction 100 The purpose of this Act is to improve coordination of aquaculture activities and to enhance related opportunities and benefits to U.S. citizens who are interested in pursuing aquaculture operations in Mississippi. The Act also provides a means of regulating operations in the State that would not only be beneficial to aquaculturists, but also will enhance and conserve a desired quality in our natural aquatic resources. The Act encourages aquaculture activities in Mississippi that enhance existing aquaculture enterprises and the development of new ones to provide increased job opportunities and income for the benefit of Mississippians. Source: Miss. Code Ann. §79-22-13. Definitions of Aquaculture Activities 101 The following words where used in this chapter have the following meanings 1. AQUACULTURE - the process of growing, farming, cultivating and/or harvesting of cultured aquatic products in marine or freshwater and includes management by an aquaculturist. 2. AQUACULTURIST - a person who is engaged in the cultivating of cultured aquatic products. 3. AQUACULTURE FACILITY - any facility or resource that is used for aquaculture activities and operations in Mississippi. 4. COMMISSIONER - refers to the Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. 5. CULTURED AQUATIC PRODUCTS - marine or freshwater plants or animals that are propagated, farmed or cultivated in an aquaculture facility under the supervision and management of an aquaculturist or that are naturally produced in an aquaculture facility that at the time of production are under the active supervision and management of an aquaculturist. 6. CULTIVATION/MARKETING PERMIT - a permit issued by the Department, applicable to design criteria to prevent release of certain cultured aquatic products from an aquaculture facility into the environment. -

Fishery Basics – Fishing Vessels Fishing Vessel Types Fishing vessels are typically designed with a specific purpose. That purpose is to locate, catch, and preserve fish while out at sea. The planned operations of a vessel determine the overall size of the vessel, the arrangement of the deck, carrying capacity, as well as the machinery and types of equipment that will be supported by the vessel. Due to the inherent differences in fishing communities around the world, there is a wide range of types and styles of fishing vessels. Vessel sizes can range from the 2 m (6 ft) dug out canoes used in subsistence and artisanal fisheries, to factory ships that exceed 130 m (427 ft) in length. Commercial fishing vessels can also be characterized by a variety of criteria: types of fish (See Biology & Ecology) they catch, fishing gear and methods used (See Fishing Gear), capacity and processing capabilities, and the geographical origin of the vessel. In 2002, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated the world fishing fleet had approximately four million vessels, with an average vessel size ranging from 10-15 m (33-49 ft). Based on a quarterly catch statistics report, published by the Pacific Fisheries Information Network (PacFIN), approximately 1,950 vessels landed their catches in California ports. Due to the technological innovations that began in the 1950s, many fishing vessels are now classified as multi-purpose vessels, because of the ability to switch out gear types depending on the targeted species. However, single use vessels still exist in the world fishing fleet today. -
